While the driver likely loses a couple of pounds at a hot race, he is wearing a helmet and driver's suit, so most of that weight (moisture) is absorbed into his clothes.

True, they probably factor in a kilo or maybe even less actually.

And then in the very high cockpit temperatures - evaporates away.

When did for Heidfeld for example have to announce his fuel load? Last year he would have been able to wait till Sunday and see what the weather is like then make a choice. Now it looks like he has to decide before qualy qualy.

This also means that teams must have to choose a fuel load before knowing if they will reach Q3 or not. It looks like Nakajima was going light in the hope of getting pole (or front row) but because he made a mistake he will now start 13th on low fuel which completely rules him out of any realistic hope for points!

Another example is Lewis will now start 18th (Toyota 19/20) with 655kg and Heikki will start 12th with 690kg. I must say I’m a little confused !

On the plus side I suppose it means Lewis and Nakajima will be able to pick there way through the field and overtake a few cars.

In Q2 they still qualify on fumes but last year they could choose how much fuel to put in the car on sunday and now they have to do it 2 hours after qualifying ends.

I am still trying to figure out what is Renault trying to accomplish with Piquet by having him carry so much fuel in qualy..

That fuel levels for cars that did not go into q3 were added after qualy.

Thanks for the clarification. I actually thought those weights were taken imediately after qualifying.

You are right. Drivers sweat and tyres disintegrate (isn't this also a factor?) so there must be a safety margin. McLaren doctor Aki Hintsa says here (in Finnish) that drivers can sweat up to 3,5 kgs during the race.

My estimates were quite a bit off because of this I guess. Rosberg and Vettel pitted four laps earlier than predicted (lap 16 vs. 20). They were the only drivers that pitted normally because everyone else had to pit earlier than planned (deteriorating soft tyres and SC).

In the FIA paper Nakajima had declared weight of 612.5 kg by mistake, so let's guess that the safety margin is 612.5 kg - 605 kg = 7.5 kg. I also changed slow lap fuel consumption from 40 % to 60 % and redid the estimates. These new estimates agree with Rosberg and Vettel pitstops.

Fuel consumption: 2.48 kg/lap (Williams Australian GP preview)
Slow lap (pit to the grid + warm up) fuel consumption: 60 % (a guess) of 2.48 kg/lap
Time penalty from Q2-Q3 time differences: 0.097 s per lap of fuel and 0.039 per kg of fuel

Pit stops.
