no conspiracy: audience figs starting to come through tho not sure how robust. they say lots of you watched F1 tho not currently hd...
3 hours ago
I'd say about ~0.5m to 1.0m of the 5.1m watched on HD.

Do you have Brazil 2004 by any chance? Would be interesting to see the ratings for a non-championship deciding race, especially one without a Brit which they've had for the last three seasons.
4.11m. (the lowest Brazil rating since 1994 which was 3.5m)

12:10- F1: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: 5.78m (41.4%)
* peak: 7.35m (46.3%) at 14:40
* highest European 'timeslot' rating since the 1998 British Grand Prix
* highest rating of 2010
Absolutely superb rating that.
(For anyone wondering, The X Factor last night peaked at nearly 18 million...)

Using Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain as our markets; 39.4m people watched Abu Dhabi 2010 and 21.6 in 2009. In 2010 39.4 watched the title decider (Abu Dhabi) and in 2009 23.9(Brazil). So the excitement of 2010 somewhat offset the lack of primetime window.
2009 season average across those countries was 20.5 for live race day audience. Which might not be the best way to calculate it, since a lot of people are going to watch tape delays for the early mmorning events.

You ready? Sure? OK...
12:10- F1: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: 5.78m (41.4%)

Just a note, Autosport and Formula1.com are reporting 5.3m for the UK. That figure is wrong, 5.78m is correct, and can be verified by the 5 and 15 minute breakdowns.
Not sure why both sites also portray the figures to be poor either, as I've noted above, its the highest European 'timeslot' rating since 1998.
Where do you get all these stats from. I would love to know the viewing figures for football matches to see who are the most popular teams to the TV companies, esspecially Newcastle.
I understand the reason Sky don't show Birmingham City more often is because of complaints from the other tv companies that it's unfair competition.
Not sure why you think that about Birmingham. In terms of pecking order for TV, its probably:
1) Man U
2) Liverpool
3) Chelsea/Arsenal
And then you'd probably get the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle etc. below.

This is slightly off topic, but did anybody else have major issues with the BBC live feed of races this year ? I found terrible dropping out, delays or just no streaming at all during crucial moments. It is the only thing that I watch that requires a licence fee, and personally, I would rather pay that 140 pounds to an independant company who can promise me uninterrupted feed of the 19 races.
Was alright for me for 99% on the year, the only problem that I had was the image freezing then "catching back up" with itself during the race at points during Korea and one or two other races, but this was an FOM problem, not BBC problem.

2008
Qualifying - 2.08 million (0.38m + 1.70m)
Race - 4.56 million (0.81m + 3.75m)
2009
Qualifying - 3.33 million (0.80m + 2.53m)
Race - 4.98 million (2.13m + 2.85m)
2010
Qualifying - 2.74 million (0.81m + 1.93m)
Race - 4.51 million (1.95m + 2.56m)
2011
Qualifying
Live - 1.08m (45.7%)
Re-Run - 1.96m (20.8%)
Total = 3.04 million
Race
Live - 2.13m (51.1%)
Re-Run - 2.02m (20.0%)
Total = 4.15 million
Lowest Race rating since 2007. The Re-Run massively drags it down overall due to the Brazil vs Scotland game on ITV1 which had 2.05m (19.7%). I guess had Hamilton won yesterday, then the Re-Run would have faired better.
The Live ratings are best ever though which they'll probably be pleased with.

Yes. (BBC1 HD figures are bundled in with the BBC1 figures automatically)Do those figures include the separate BBC HD channel (and therefore the 20 or so people watching it ) ??

2011
17:00 to 19:00 - 1.11m
* 0.69m watched on Ten
* 0.43m watched on One/One HD
On Seven at the time was AFL - Round 1: Melbourne v Sydney (14:00 to 18:00) which had 0.42m. And on Nine at the time was Sunday Football: Manly v Newcastle (16:00 to 18:00) which had 0.44m. Although on the face it of 1.1m looks pretty poor, its actually pretty good, TV viewing in Australia is a lot lower because of the climate than other countries.
Compared with:
2010
17:00 to 19:00 - 1.18m
* 0.82m watched on Ten
* 0.36m watched on One/One HD

In Germany at RTL a record (for the Melbourne race) average of 4,19 million viewers or 49,5% (previous record was 3,66 million in 09 & 10)So in UK, Poland, Australia and Spain, ratings were down for Australia. Anyone have Germany's?
When Vettel crossed the line at 9.33h 5,22 million were viewing.

That doesn't really surprise me with Vettel's victory. So if we're to compare for the main broadcasters listed so far (including re-run where listed) :
+14.5% - Germany - 3.66m to 4.19m
-5.9% - Australia - 1.18m to 1.11m
-8.0% - UK - 4.51m to 4.15m
-14.2% - Spain - 4.71m to 4.04m
-48.4% - Poland - 1.84m to 0.95m

I can't find TV ratings for India anywhere. Magazine subscriptions have risen and probably even the viewers would have too.
Ive heard they're close to 20mil. Which makes sense given their population, but still seems almost beyond what you can imagine.

I'm surprised it took Bernie so long to target Inida, given their population. I know cricket is a religion there and there haven't been any successfcul Indian drivers in F1 but I get the impression that a GP there would be well supported.

Just out of interest are figures for people watching in BBC1 HD included?
And also are people who recorded race and watched later counted as well?
Yes to both. (anyone who watched either airing before 2am the next day is counted)

Ratings aren't accurate though are they, they are just estimates based on a few households arent they? its not like my freeview box has a transmitter just a reciever...

are the BBC live website streams added? I think the amount of people that know they can watch it later on iPlayer nowadays will affect it quite a bit. 4 years ago people had to either bother to record it or be in on sunday!

The UK figures were previously generated by taking a number of housholds that agree to be monitored (via a box) and then the figures are multiplied up. I don't know if that still applies. Personally I V+ it and watched it when I woke up. The clocks going forwarded didn't help my mood...but McLaren's performance didare the BBC live website streams added? They tookover when damon hill's best years were coming to an end and then only had 2 years of hamilton before giving up on it. BBC coverage is decent now but before itv tookover it wasnt so great, often had delayed race forecasts, bbc2, channel swaps halfway thru race, and no qualifying coverage. So itv did raise the bar somewhat and have probably contributed to the now better BBC coverage.

yeah I read about that as well, seems a quite inaccurate way as I read it was only a very small amount of people, about 10000 or so in a population of 60 million. I would like to think they can more accurately measure it in the digital era now as sky boxes etc. are capable of sending information back and with streaming that can be easily tallied up.

Ask a number of viewers to keep a log and make an estimate on the bigger picture based on that?

2011 : 1,8M
2010, 1,5M
Since the GP started at 8am local time, these are decent numbers. Maybe, tf1 will decide to broadcast qualifying again...

How do they calculate viewing figures these days?
Ask a number of viewers to keep a log and make an estimate on the bigger picture based on that?
In France, they choose something like 1000 people that represent the global population (young, old, rich, poor, people living in cities etc) and give them a device that records everything they do with their tv. Then, by using some black box, they expand these figures to the whole country
#347
Posted 30 March 2011 - 09:58
Btw, besides this device that records what you watch in your household, you have to keep track who is watching it! Like now I watch with grandma and so on... they need to know exactly who is watching what. It's rather unreliable method...

Set top boxes provided by whichever company does the measuring on a roughly 5000:1 ratio sample of households. In the States for example Nielsen has 25,000 set top boxes that monitor and report viewership (the US is about 115 million households). The UK equivalent is BARB

It sounds believable. People have been interested about the Grand Prix in India. At least the youth of Delhi, whom I belong to.
