Right, time to attempt a potentially invalid comparison, let's see how far we get!
Australian Grand Prix - Ratings Roundup
2008
Qualifying - 2.08 million (0.38m + 1.70m)
Race - 4.56 million (0.81m + 3.75m)
2009

2011
Qualifying - 3.04 million (1.08m + 1.96m)
Race - 4.15m (2.13m + 2.02m)
2012
Qualifying
Sky Live - ???
BBC Highlights - 1.48m (13.4%) inc HD
* peak: 1.71m at 13:45
- combined lowest Australian Grand Prix Qualifying highlights figure since 2004
Total = ??? million
Race
Sky Live - 617k [weighted average based on the below between 05:00 to 08:00, comparable with above figures as 60 minutes pre-show; 30 minutes post-show]
* entire programme average - 526k (16.68%)
* 04:30 to 06:00 - 267k (25.39%)
* 06:00 to 07:40 - 874k (30.91%)
* 07:40 to 09:00 - 384k
* one of the above percentages is wrong, but not sure which - there's no way the average can be 16.68%
* peak: 1.02m (22.15%) at 07:35
BBC Highlights - 2.73m (22.9%)
* peak: 3.28m (26.15%) at 15:20
Total = 3.35 million
* combined peak: 4.30m
- lowest Australian Grand Prix figure since 2004 and possibly the second lowest since 1995
Note: Sky Sports F1 figures for Qualifying have not been reported.
Sky and Jake can spin it all they want, but in reality, the figures are abysmal.
Dunno what Sky and BBC were expecting. A few of my friends who are casual f1 fans who dont have Sky found out the result before the race was shown on the BBC so did not bother watching it. I expect many casual viewers to do the same this year. Resulting in a loss of at least 2M from last year.

Wasn't there a Sky promo leaflet doing the rounds pre-season that detailed what viewing figures they were expecting for each race, or am I making that up?

They can't mean million, can they?
The top rows on that chart refer to demographics, I believe?

Sky - 874,000
BBC - 2,730,000

I would take that as 1.34m expected average for the seasons live exclusive races.

I think this is to be expected with the move to Sky.
It will be very interesting to see the numbers for the British Grand Prix though.
Indeed, as will the Chinese GP (first race that the BBC will also show live).

That's a crazy CPM. But yeah they should reach that figure for exclusive races at better times, especially if McLaren are doing well. I don't think they will average that though.http://www.f1fanatic...0...sal_(1).pdf think thats it.

DMN those are BBC Highlights figures?
#563
Posted 19 March 2012 - 21:08
My understanding is that it's the percentage of the target audience. So, 1.34 means they will reach 1.34% of the total possible viewing audience. 1.42 ABC1 MEN means that they expect to get 1.42% of the total number of men in class group ABC1.http://www.f1fanatic...0...sal_(1).pdf think thats it.

The prices on Page 4 in the table? I'm pretty sure they are viewing figures audience estimates, hence 'Average TVR Live Races' etc next to it with the 'INDS' their main expectations (I think 'ABC1 ADS' onwards is something different though).The price quotes are for advertising online, not the broadcast.
DMN those are BBC Highlights figures?
Which figures? If you're on about the breakdowns, then yes - 1pm to 2:15pm for Saturday [BBC2] and 2pm to 4pm for Sunday [BBC1].

I think we're looking at two different things. You're right in saying that, but there's a table on Page 4 - 'ESTIMATED AUDIENCE DELIVERY:' - that's what I'm looking at.The prices are on P5 and are about online ads.
pdac, that's a good shout.

08 - 0.35m - Fight Night Live (Sat, 21:00, SS1)
09 - 0.29m - Sport Tonight (Sat, 20:00, SSN)
NOTE: BARB does not have the Top 10 for Sky Sports F1 on their website, so other shows could have got in the top 10, but I don't know, yet.
Australian Grand Prix rating is for 06:00 to 09:00 only. The official there is 0.71m, the overnight for the same timeslot was ~0.66m, so a timeshift of about 50k which is not a large amount, as expected for live programming. I think Qualifying would be near to the bottom of that top 10, but obviously I don't know at the moment.

Interesting that the total race figure is up week-on-week. I would suggest that maybe people did not know it was still on BBC, but that was identical week-on-week, so not sure if that rings true.
Maybe a lot of people watched the 09:30 repeat last Sunday, but we do not know yet.

Sky has gained around 50% more live viewers at peak, but personally I would put that up to Malaysia being run at a more reasonable hour for the UK audience

Will the figures also be boosted by a British 1-3 the week before and a British team winning?

PS - I would take the Sky figures with a pinch of salt, the Sunday and Saturday peak time football slots getting less than F1 at 6am seems crazy. That table might also be fixture related as there wasn't many big games this weekend which might push F1 further down the table.

The consolidated figures include people who timeshifted that particular showing for up to 7 days after the original transmission - so 710k watched the 06:00 to 09:00 'showing' within 7 days of the original transmission.PS - I would take the Sky figures with a pinch of salt, the Sunday and Saturday peak time football slots getting less than F1 at 6am seems crazy. If you were to take the practice figures individually, then they would come across as disappointing, but the total figures show what the ballpark figures should be. Definitely when it comes to Europe, that should be their aim - to get 200k for Practice 1 and 2 with possibly a higher figure for The F1 Show if it is broadcast at say 18:00 when people are coming in from work. I'm surprised The F1 Show didn't do higher live, 39k seems a really disappointing figure for it, maybe some thought it was the preview show again? It doesn't seem like that there was a lot of Sky+'ing going on either which surprises me, all of Friday's figures individually are under 100k and not once did the channel record a 15 minute peak above that number. Nevertheless, solid Friday figures for the channel.
I don't have the full programme numbers for FP1, FP2, Qualifying or Race due to the 06:00 cut off but Qualifying live I thought would have done a bit better, again it seems some didn't bother Sky+'ing it due to the repeats later in the day, whereas when it was live on BBC they did as only one repeat is screened later. The Qualifying total is good though.
A 1.33 million combined peak for the race is good, especially now we know that Malaysia live peaked with 1.5 million, so good news there. The first replay at 09:30 also did very well for them. The Legends' shows are doing okay, but are the lowest rated programmes of the weekend, probably to be expected.
Although they are overnights, I suspect they timeshifted very little so is a good indicator of how the shows did.
The top 10 for Sky Sports F1 therefore is as follows (approx in some cases):
1 - 671k - AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX LIVE (SUN 0600)
2 - 336k - AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING LIVE (SAT 0600)
3 - 267k - AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX BUILD-UP (SAT 2830)*

It will be interesting though to see what happens when the races move to their 'traditional' 1pm starting time and have to compete with football. I wonder how many of those viewers watched as they already had Sky Sports for the footie and will chose that over F1 when they are on head to head.

In particular the GP2 replay did well, more than the figures it was getting on Eurosport. I do note that the Live IndyCars from the Sunday night in Malaysia got under 58k, however this may be due to the fact that some were watching via Sky Sports 3 on the Red Button.

Our M1 HD television achieved 923 911.BARB have released Sky Sports F1's Top 10's which are as follows:
Sky Sports F1
w/e 25 Mar 2012
000's
1 LIVE MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX (SUN 0730) 906
2 LIVE MALAYSIAN GP QUALIFYING (SAT 0700) 456
3 MALAYSIAN GP QUALIFYING REPLAY (SAT 1201) 83
4 MALAYSIAN GP2 RACE 1 REPLAY (SAT 0945) 79
It's kind of weird and sad, that F1 seems to be a niche sport in its homeland, in a country with a 60+ million population, while in a small, irrelevant Central European country with a 10 million population can have better ratings now.
We were decent against the BBC ratings too in recent years, because until last year the F1 coverage was on a much more popular television channel, there were 1,5-2 million viewing figures too. So M1 HD is just coming back, and hopefully will reach that height.

Sky isn't the only broadcaster though.
It's the only live broadcaster for the races in question, unless you're counting Radio 5's audio broadcasting.

If the brand is only in F1 to drive awareness (like RBS on the Williams or Microsoft Dynamics on the Lotus) then the marketers would want to count how many people might be exposed to the brand.
If they're in there to convince people that they're an exciting brand (like Red Bull, Lucozade, the motor manufacturers) then there's a world of difference between exposure to the audience of a live sporting and exposure to someone watching an extended highlights package who will presumably be far less engaged with what they're watching and who may well know the result already.

2008
Qualifying - 1.96 million (0.63m + 1.33m)
Race - 4.42 million (2.44m + 1.98m)
2009
Qualifying - 2.9 million (1.0m + 1.9m)
Race - 4.63 million (3.23m + 1.40m)
2010
Qualifying - 2.30 million (1.13m + 1.17m)
Race - 4.70 million (3.17m + 1.53m)
2011
Qualifying - 2.93 million (1.38m + 1.55m)
Race - 4.74 million (3.27m + 1.47m)
* 5-minute live peak: 5.12m
2012
Qualifying
Sky Live - 251k
BBC Live - 1.09m (30.8%)
BBC Re-Run - 1.17m (11.9%)
Total = 2.53m
Race
Sky Live - 480k (6.98%)
* 15-minute peak: 854k
* 5-minute peak: 887k
BBC Live - 2.85m (39.4%)
* 15-minute peak: 4.1m
* 5-minute peak: 4.21m
BBC Re-Run - 1.6m (12.6%)
Total = 4.93m
* highest Chinese Grand Prix figure ever
As I thought, when BBC and Sky are live, the figures as a whole will be higher, whereas when only Sky are live the figures will be lower because people that already know the result are unlikely to watch the BBC highlights. Great race total in any event.

Sky+ is included - for the overnights if you watch before 2am, and for the officials from BARB, if you watch within 7 days of the original transmission. For instance, you watching say for instance the 2000 season review wouldn't be included in BARB's figure on the website, although Sky internally will be able to see all the different figures.How do Sky+ figures affect things?

When BBC & SKY share the races, i anticipated BBC to trounch Sky anyway.
What i will be facsinated to see as we move into Europe, is how the BBC is effected. So far, the races have been early morning allowing the highlights to be on at lunchtime. For the casual viewing household (who i bargain make up a large percentage of the BBC numbers) the GP is just a traditional Sunday thing to do. I wonder how many of that demographic are going to bother watching highlights in the evening instead of Corination Street/Heartbeat....

Also the football season ends soon-ish, so F1 won't be competing on Sundays with the Premier League, for whatever that's worth.I'd say the figures are all pretty unremarkable at the moment.

600,000? paid customers, third race of a season in - I don't think that's bad at all, as pointed out wait until the races are in Europe and at a more 'reasonable' time of day
I don't know the costs of a SKY ticket to watch the F1 races, but obvioulsy times that by 600k/800k and it starts to look like covering costs would be possible - what's the target viewing figure SKY would want from their first season 1 million a race?

Depends on how many of those viewers are new Sky customers or existing Sky customers upgrading to HD to get F1. As you get Sky F1 free if you are an existing Sky HD customer (and according to the adverts if you are a Sky Sports customer) then anyone in that category is not a gain to Sky - except in that by boosting the numbers they might make it more attractive to advertisers.600,000? paid customers, third race of a season in - I don't think that's bad at all, as pointed out wait until the races are in Europe and at a more 'reasonable' time of day

Had an interesting conversation with a friend regarding existing Sky Sports customers and Sky F1. New he was a Sky Sports customer so asked him what he thought of Sky F1. He replied that he had not been able to get it, although according to the adverts he should be able to. He spent a lot of time on the phone to Sky Support who were adament that he had to upgrade to Sky HD. When he pointed out that they had advertised it as available to SS customers he was told that those adverts where a mistake and insisted he had to upgrade to Sky HD. After many such phone calls he treatened to cancel his Sky subscription and report them to the Advertising Standards Agency. This had the desired effect and they gave him a free upgrade to Sky HD.
Looks like desperation might be creeping in!

Casual fans will soon get used to watching 10 live races and 10 highlights. It isn't that big a problem. I don't know anyone who is that bothered by missing the odd live race, and I know a lot of motorsport people

"Live Bahrain Grand Prix averaged 1.4m and peaked at 1.6m on Sky Sports F1 yesterday #F1"
99 percent certain that is the race average only. Programme average will be around ~800k I think. In comparison with Malaysia, according to the same Twitter that had an average of 1.25m, with a peak of 1.51m.
The BBC highlights had 3.65m (20.2%).
