I really don't understand this - if you want MS but are not a subscriber, buy it when it appears in your local newsagent. If you are a subscriber, wait until it drops onto your doormat, then enjoy it. If you are not happy with delivery times - unsubscribe. If the magazine is so important that cancelling a subscription an unbearable thought, wait.

Damien Smith has explained what the problems are and his plans to improve the situation - I don't see that he can do much more, and at least you now know that someone in a position to make changes has listened and cares. We're not talking about waiting for kidney dialysis...

I for one do not pace around the room awaiting the sound of the postman. I thank Damien for explaining on the forum the reasons and what they are doing about it.

Remember, it is better to subscribe as the publisher will derive more income per copy than via a supermarket or whs. That is important and helps the publication to remain in print.

I have to admit that I rarely bought MS after my free copies dried up - I wonder how many people regularly buy magazines that they once worked on. Am I alone?

I don't know when it appears in the shops as I never look. I don't look at the next publication date as to be honest I'm not really bothered. As long it arrives on my once a month and more importantly the content is good - which it generally is - then I'm happy.

Exactly the same for me, and I certainly appreciate Damien Smith taking the time to explain their situation and plans

I tend to save them up, still 'savouring' December's issue

I would have said that too, ensign, but I couldn't spell it!

Completely agree with Tony. Mine arrived yesterday and I'm glad I didn't succumb and buy one at the airport last week! We are lucky that it is in safer hands now and delivering an excellent monthly read.

Down here in SW France I don't have the option of "picking up" from Smiths or the local newsagent so have to wait on the printer's pleasure. What I did have this week, as with all other weeks, was the bins emptied TWICE. Plus even in the snow the recycling collection was on time before 0900hrs yesterday.

Still waiting for my bins to be emptied. Maybe I should leave them outside Gregors house

My copy arrived today, some days after I saw it on local newsstands but, quite frankly, I couldn't care less. As a subscriber I save money on the cover price and, as it is not particularly time-sensitive, it doesn't bother me. By the way, thanks to Damien for troubling to respond to the various criticisms; it would be easier for him to ignore them all.

Agreed but it is frustrating when the magazine has been in "the shops" for a few days and the subscriber issue still hasn't hit the doormat

Well done, Damien and keep up the good work on a much improved Motor Sport

Can I just add a thank you to both Doug Nye and Damien Smith for the tribute to Tom Wheatcroft in the January issue. Firstly to Doug for his insightful words, and secondly to Damien for finding the space (as explained under DCN's mug shot on page 9). I never met Tom, but I sure made sure that I visited his Donington Collection on each of my visits to the UK in 1994 & 97.

When I first arrived in Australia some 38 years ago I was inclined to take some umbrage at the term 'Whingeing Pom'. The seemingly endless moaning in this thread about delivery time does lend weight to the familiar Okkers' barb.

The December issue has just arrived in The Adelaide Hills and a jolly good read it was too. As ensign14 said, contemporaneity is pretty much a non-issue. Living here, Mr Roebuck's wordage is always out of date but there is plenty more to enjoy - as there has been in every issue I have variously subscribed to or had delivered by the newsagent since the January 1961 issue.

Damien, thank you for patiently responding to the various comments here on a regular basis.

Yes, February has made it to the outer reaches of Milton Keynes through the snow (my observation being that Royal Mail vans can travel at twice the speed of any other vehicle on snow ...).

Just wanted to say the the photography of the Penske is excellent; bravo Mr Photographer / Art Editor.

And yes, the Doug Nye / Wheatcroft tribute last month was excellent too.

Thanks for posting the photo, Grff, the last of the Nigel Bennett Penskes. Judging by Mario's profile the car must be running on Michelins!

That's the problem following retirement for many, advancing years and all that.

And isn't Nigel Roebuck short ?

Have any US subscribers received the January, 2010, issue yet? I haven't, and there's no US phone contact on the magazines's masthead. I've noticed the January issue on my local newsstand for at least two weeks.

That is why SCM invariably carries a shooting stick. IIRC it is something to do with his hip operation or leg injury with his motor scooter.
O/T a bit, but what wonderful summery colours they are in the dress and the cardigan/shrug worn by the young woman standing between SCM and the person I believe to be Lady Moss. So very Goodwood. Is that Louisa Skipper?

Having seen the February issue in the NY Grand Central newstand yesterday morning I was pleased, on my return home, to find that my January subscription copy had finally arrived that day! For once, given the flimsy plastic packing that they use in the US, the copy was undamaged. It's a little sad to be one month behind using the subscription service.

The US subscription service really is a bit of a joke and over the past year a couple of issues have failed to turn up. If you call in they're good about replacing them but it really is a lot of work to keep on top of them. As I've got a run that goes back to the 1930s getting tidy copies on a regular basis is important.

There has been such an improvement in the magazine over the past few years it seems crazy that they can't get the subscription issue sorted out. I do get some other magazines sent on subscription directly from the UK and they arrive (UK Postal stoppages allowing) on a regular and dependable basis.

In addition to MS, I receive Octane and Classic and Sportscar by subscription. I don't know if they are sent from the UK or from within the US, but receiving them on time has never been a problem.

Still no January issue....February at newsstand for at least a week...arms folded, tapping toe.....truly awful subscriber service. Pity, as the magazine itself seems to have improved markedly over the past year.

I don't have January yet, so emailed Motor Sport and got this reply:
"Please accept my apologies for the late delivery of your magazine. As you may be aware, we have recently moved to printing within the US and although this will ultimately lead to better service and faster delivery times, the changeover caused some unexpected problems that delayed subscriptions.

By January we had resolved these problems and were scheduled to have the January issue delivered at the end of December. However, we have also changed distributors and a misunderstanding as to what documents were required for dispatch led to the January magazines not being sent out until January 6th, only reaching subscribers this week. Your copy should arrive shortly, if it has not already – if you are still waiting at the end of the week, please let me know and I will send out an immediate replacement.

The February issue was dispatched on January 14th and should be with you within the next 7-10 days. "

Much as I like reading Nigel's articles and feel that a lot of what he wrote about in the late 60s & early 70s mirrored my experiences I wouldn't rank him in the Top 10 motor sport journalists of all time!

Accepting that other-language readers won't even have been aware of DSJ's output in this regard, perhaps you might care to list the comparable motor sporting achievements of other-language motor sporting journalists - Paul Frere excluded?

Not that Jenks really considered himself to be "a journalist", whatever his passport might have claimed. He saw himself more as a lifelong enthusiast and habitual writer, who merely wrote about his enthusiasm. Just - I suspect - as does Nigel.

Not that Jenks really considered himself to be "a journalist" . He saw himself more as a lifelong enthusiast and habitual writer, who merely wrote about his enthusiasm. DCN

Philippe, Doug's reply is the whole point about Jenks as a writer, his knowledge, involvement, love of experiencing all aspects of speed and competition, his knowing all the people, above all being trusted and respected by those involved, whether they liked him or not ( even Enzo when he did not regard his as a Maserati spy...), and then his ability to translate that into re-creation of the atmosphere etc of the event described, plus the technical skill to explain nuts and bolts to his readership, these are what ranked Jenks so highly. Not tolerating fools was a bonus, since it avoided mealy-mouthed platitudes. He invariably had to find out his information and source material - no press or PR handouts, or electronic stuff then.

It is also imperative to see him as being of his time, when there were precious few others, or fewer, who covered the same topics. Philippe's barb about the Mille Mgilia misses the point. It was because he was capable of doing the job next to SCM, trusted by him and the might of MB, that he was able to bring his other attributes into play which resulted in the definitive race report. How many writers, then or now, could have even sat next to SCM without being a distraction for 10 hrs at race speeds, let alone taking it all in in a manner to be capable of total recall?

He was the on-site enthusiast writing knowledgeably to fellow enthusiasts back home. You cannot compare modern writers in the same way.

I cannot offer any disclaimer regarding partisanship. My loyalty to DSJ is well known. I bought my first copy of MS less than 2 months after Philippe was born, and grew up with Jenks and the Bod. Anyway, opinions are always highly subjective. Whatever we do, let it not be compiling a list of the top 10 journos. Spare us that at least.

Tony, apart from the fact that I always feel sorry for a chap who has to laugh at his own joke so publicly, the fact that you made that comment shows, IMHO, that you have missed completely just what made Jenks, and makes DCN, tick, and why they have both been prepared to be outspoken over motor sporting things, where detail counts.

...er. it was meant to be construed as somewhat tongue in cheek, Roger. I can assure you that I hold both Jenks and DCN in high esteem in equal yet different measure. I have also been lucky enough to meet both of them at different times, and I apologise unreservedly for any offense I may have caused to either yourself, or anyone else for that matter.

There will never be another Jenks, as the system just won't allow it these days. Likewise there will never be another DCN, Henry Manney or Pete Lyons for the very same reason. Nigel Roebuck is about the last of that "generation" of writers, but IMHO that's about as far as it will ever be allowed to go. The next generation of readers, the "Now" generation are somewhat less demanding, shall we say?

Much as I like reading Nigel's articles and feel that a lot of what he wrote about in the late 60s & early 70s mirrored my experiences I wouldn't rank him in the Top 10 motor sport journalists of all time!

Is it just me, or is the notion of a list of "the Top 10 motor sport journalists of all time" just as useful as a list of "the Top 10 drivers of all time"?

I actually agree with the concept that a list of top 10 journalists would be a fruitless exercise. What I was trying to do, and apparently failing, was to indicate that in my opinion Nigel Roebuck certainly isn't the "finest Motor sport journalist of all time" far from it.

As a writer, Jenks always looked up to Doug.

Oh yeah...except when I was sitting down and he was standing up (as I am confident you meant). Look, as a race reporter I - for one - have never been anywhere near worthy to lick DSJ's boots, nor Pete Lyons's nor Peter Windsor's (the best, most closely engaged and most perceptive duo in my opinion), nor Alan Henry's, Nigel's, Maurice Hamilton's, Andy Marriott's, Rodney Walkerley's, Peter Garnier's, W.F.Bradley's, and several more. DSJ got involved to the heart of the matter, sidecar world champion passenger 1949, major player in the 1955 MM victory...he'd been in there and done it - the rest, with the noble exception of such as Paul Frere or in an American context, maybe, Jerry Titus, just scribbled about what The Men had been achieving. Jose Rosinski and Pierre Dieudonne are up there somewhere, I guess, but not particularly (so far as I know) as race reporters...which is a very different discipline to earning one's living scribbling about racing and racing cars in general - the easier and less-exclusively committed activity.
