Sorry Dan, I bow to your superior knowledge on beverages that make you legless.

But clearly not gutless.

Hi - Has anyone got a photo of Jac Nellemann (portrait)? He was driving the Lotus 17 (number 20) in the Lavant Cup. Thanks Alfred
PS: It was my first time at the Goodwood Revival. And I really enjoyed it. This is an amazing event.

Does anyone have photos of Nigel Webb's E-type (below) when he came round a bend and found a static car sideways in front of him and had to make a very impressive avoidance please?

Posted Image

There was an incident in front of us on the Saturday during practice where the Grey E type with the perspex rear end appeared to suddenly loose power between the exit of St Marys and Lavant. The waved Yellows went out quickly, but the red E type clearly didn't see then and just about collected the slow car. It took to the grass and shot between the other car and the tyre wall. How he got away with it I have no idea!

he did take out the 50m board though.

Nearly as scary as when I turned round to see a scarab plough into the tyres just behind me on the Friday. Did it's front suspension fail prior to the crash?

Will post a selection of my photos over the next wee while - I've just got home after a weeks Hols in Sussex.

Noting the comments on Deck chairs above, my group of friends and I were subjected to shouted instructions to 'sit down' when we stood up to watch a race from people seated behind us on the banking. If you want to sit in a seat, buy a grandstand ticket! we also had similar requests from people sitting on the ground which is less a clear cut argument, but why shouldn't we enjoy our prefered vantage point to view and take photos in a public area?

No such problems out at the rear of the circuit of course where it actually seemed quieter this year?

Does anybody know what caused the red T70 to spear sideways at the start? It appeared quite undamaged and continued to circulate, while the Ford GT and the white T70 suffered heavy frontal damage. Presumably they hit each other in the melee?

Edited by richie.

The startline incident in the Whitsun Trophy race on Sunday was unbelievable, created by Paul Knapfield who careered at right angles through the pack of cars virtually unscathed but caused mayhem. I could only see the replay on the large screen, which was played again and again. Everyone looked on in disbelief.

Reported by Marcus Pye in the current Autosport "Paul Knapfield lost control of the Lola and spearheaded sideways". He went on
"maybe some drivers who race only once a year shouldn't be allowed in the Whitsun Trophy or the race should take a break for a year".

Did anyone see, photograph or speak to Paul afterwards?

I had the great privilege of finding myself in a position to take these…

Now that I am back from my southern sojourn I can elaborate a little on David's trip of a liftetime, having been designated his official photographer in the nerve wracking build up to his ride in the Saturday Sir Stirling tribute parade.

First I need to upload a few images, but in the meantime, here is the sartorially elegant Mr Bread, pictured in front of the famous Beardvan

Posted Image

I'm sure the jacket must have been a better fit on its previous owner ;) ;)

Doing the deal....David negotiates hard with even more sartorially elegant Klaus Werner. His hat looked VERY expensive.

David takes his anti-smoking stance very seriously, the large sign firmly attached to his trilby...

More to follow soon of the main event.

I had to endure a gruelling hour or so in the paddock with TNF celebrity and well known typographical error, David Bread as his mood swung from optimism to despair.

At varying points his promised Saturday ride in the lovely Maserati 300S was on, off, unlikely, possible, probable, or delayed until Sunday. His initial sunny demeanour turned cloudier as the minutes ticked by, and Claudia had not reappeared from lapping Goodwood in the Beardvan. I had my hankie at the ready and warned David that I didn't handle crying females well, let alone grown men.

We listened intently as the cars were called in readiness for the parade in honour of David's lifelong hero, and the cars numbered 60 onwards had already been called as Maserati 300S number 53 remained static, driverless and passengerless.

We looked in vain for the Beardvan to return from practice, leaving Claudia free to ferry her fretting fellow paradee, but alas our gazes in all directions were met with all manner of meticulous machinery, but not the Hovis carrier.

Then, as if out of nowhere Claudia appeared, bright as a button, and hopped in, leaving David to ease himself in the passenger seat. A shoehorn would have been handy to assist his ample form into the cockpit, but after fiddling with his bits and pieces, he assumed a comfortable-ish postion. The following pics will tell the tale better than words...

An excited David begins the okey cokey as he attempts entry...

Posted Image

Claudia leans to her right to allow a little more room...

Posted Image

Safely in. door shut, a little adjustment to the pacemaker...

Posted Image

"Have you got enough choke, Claudia?"...

Posted Image

We're off!

Posted Image

A Beard's eye view as the parade awaits entry onto the circuit

Posted Image

After the exciting ride, Claudia's out in a jiffy, while David eases himself out tentatively but with a big smile. I then have a debrief, and he tells me he was pleased he decided to clad himself in brown, as her opposite lock exits out of the chicane were exciting to say the least...

Well done David - it was a pleasure to share your experience, albeit as a mere chronicler!

Top Blag that man!

I managed to wangle a ride in a Minisprint in the parade - you think it was a squeeze in the Maserati! - there were 4 of us in the Mini -and those missing 3 inches make all the difference, as the nun said to the Bishop!

I hope you all recovered.

Clever notion, the Minisprint. Unless parked next to a standard Mini, one might not notice.

A very low roof.

At our age, and with our backs, I'd think we'd struggle to get one in let alone five of us :smoking:

Ahh there was plenty of room in the front though ! ;) I double wangled as I hitched a ride on Sunday in the back of John Rhodes' racer, we knew we were in for a treat when his right arm went into the door pocket before the corners .

It has to be said the parade was fun, especially when on the Sunday our car was sandwiched in the single seaters and the car in front shot out of the paddock, bogged down, then all four came alive and he did a 360! The greatest pleasure though was to be asked if Stirling could drive my car on the Saturday morning. According to the passenger, he wasn't really trying but nevertheless hit 115mph on Lavant.

Pedant that I am, no-one in the UK would have worn a Firestone badge on their overalls in the late 'fifties (which must be the period he is trying to portray, judging from his helmet) and the embroidery on the Esso badge is rubbish.

Yeah, but give him an 'A' for effort. I applaud the fellow for the spirit in which he undertook his effort, which I think is more appropriate than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

An 'A' for effort by all means - but surely a D minus (or just a plain Z) for result. He just looks daft - dafter even than all those people in modern military uniforms complete with medals with their hair past their collar. I wondered whether he was a 'works' driver (one of the large number of makey-learney actors drafted in for the weekend, who do contribute to 'the show') or a privateer, but concluded that he must be the latter. Given Lord March's legendary attention to detail those boots would never have made it past Thursday scrutineering.

Mind you, I speak as one whose wife, when asked by daughter 'what's daddy going to wear to look like he came out of the 'Fifties?' replied with truth: ' Who knows, darling. Daddy will just open his wardrobe and pick something...'

And I do agree, though, that it is nothing to get worked up about and all merely contributes to the happy fivolity of the occasion.

I have seen 'G Hill' at several Revivals so I assume he is a Goodwood fixture, although he is rather far around the circuit in the pictures, but I certainly saw him in the paddock on a couple of occasions this year.
I must agree about the types of dress code adopted by too many of the spectators, more fancy dress than period dress.

The Revival is not a movie, and there is no costume department to get the crowd scene's right. I'm surprised so many people get it anywhere near "right" as dress code was rather random in period, IIRC. Apart from the nobs & trendies, you just did the best with what you'd got. I first marshalled in 1968 in a fake fur jacket, and I can recall crombies, gabardines and parkas! The Revival is re-creating what people expect, not how it really was! :well:

It's a genuine type 54, the first one produced. Achille Varzi won the 1933 Avus GP in it. I'm sure someone can provide much more detail. It was driven to Goodwood on the road from Wales.

When I went to Goodwood in the fifties it was mostly duffle coats, cavalry twills and bobble hats. I didn't see any of these at the Revival. It must be global warming.
