'Smoke' Tony Stewart, depicted here in a photo by Bob Jennings, started from pole in his Rookie Year 1996 after Luyendyk was disqualified for 7lbs under weight and Scott Brayton the previous years pole sitter died practising in his back up car.

Jim is right. Brayton perished after he had already won the pole for the 1996 race. Stewart may have started from the pole, but he did not win it.Started first, yes, but despite revisionists trying to ever pad Stewart's records, he did not win the pole.

Regarding the title of this thread, "Rookie Poll Winners at the Indy 500" :
Winning the "poll" is meaningless; it is winning the election that counts!

It could also be argued that 'poll' position - as in 'head' - could be the correct spelling...

Nevertheless, any further information related to the original question? Did no rookie really win the POLE for the '500' between 1950 and the 90s? Seems incredible.
