That said... Aragon is nice though.

It's not perfect, though. I'm not happy with the switchback. The first turn needs to be a little tighter, but the drivers should be able to accelerate through the second turn.

That looks good FlatOverCrest. Flowing section until the hairpin, which should be faster now if its that wide which would be good to keep cars closer together when accelerating. Change 2 I like aswell, the car defending on the inside would be at the wrong side for the next corner and Change 3 corner allows for several lines when defending/attacking.
I'd also adjust turn 3/4 and the following straight so that the straight is tangential to the end of the turn, effectively removing turn 4.
Could we join 16-17 with an arc rather than a straight thus making it one longer corner? Have we got room?

No they wouldnt. I looked at this quite closely and if you notice I brought the first hairpin away form the grandstands, so what was the old part of the track becomes part of the run-off. Likewise at Change 2 it uses the old track as part of the run off.
Kucki saw exactly what I was thinking in Change 3, which would not require any extension into the water.
I get it now.
Make the turns 5 and 6 chincane become a hairpin leading into the long straight. The unused part of the track could then become run off without having to touch the grandstands.
OTOH, there is a grandstand right above the run off currently at change number 2. That chincane cannot be touched without rebulding the grandstand unless they straighten it out somewhat and make it a much faster sequence of corners. I also do not think change number 3 would work because you'd still need massive run off if someone lost it under braking in the second half of the corner. A much simpler solution/change would be to take it straight from corner 11 to 14 and give drivers the oportunity to try to pull X overtaking moves on the form current corners 11 to 14.
Forgive the horrible paint job, but these are my suggestions:
1 - get ride of the chincane, make it a simple hairpin before the long straight. The reasoning behind that it to create an overtaking point at the hairpin itself and down the straight, since drivers taking aggressive and defensive moves would also have different exit speeds and one will inevitably compromise his speed down the straight (unless he has virtually no wing on his set up).
2 - transform the chincane after the long back straight into a medium/quick left right flick, sort of like the first corner at Melbourne. It will remain a long and heavy enough braking zone, but it will also be fast enough to avoid the slingshot effect down the next straight.
3 - straighten the run from corner 11 to 14. Eliminating the chincane will allow drivers to try different entry and exit lines and forcing them to find a compromise when defending or attacking.
And then all these changes together would make the track faster and set up less obvious towards highdownforce and cornering. Suddenly they drivers would also have to worry about overtaking and defending. Sector 3 of the track would become more difficult and tricky once they take some wing off to have enough speed through sectors 1 and 2. That might even lead into more mistakes in the slower sections and some possible overtaking moves as well. Not to mention the integration between hotel and circuit would remain untouched and the cirucit would lose none of its character and appeal. Everyone wins.

I present you with my suggestions to improve Abu Dhabi racing circuit.
Imola had mostly horrible races after 1994. If you want a second GP in Italy, Mugello all the way.

But yeah the narrow circuit, with modern f1 cars, was not an overtaking haven. But it did produce entertaining races in stunning surroundings. And it has charisma. Apart from Adelaide, it's the one circuit that really should be back in the calendar.

F1 has room for a few 'awesome track but no overtaking' races. Imola was a superb driver challenge and great to watch cars on. Yas Marina is ugly, dull to drive, dull to watch and also has no overtaking. Its like the anti-prefect-circuit.Imola had mostly horrible races after 1994. If you want a second GP in Italy, Mugello all the way.
