Because VR didn't want to report it themselves?

That makes no sense at all. Virgin *did* report it themselves, but only after asking him what they were 'in the dock for', after which he sent them a private message - presumably to tell them what the issue was.

Everything points to him knowing at the time, and just using it to draw attention to himself. And, if he didn't, he called it 'MASSIVE' without knowing anything about it - so would be nice for him to say 'sorry for raising so much controversy over what turned out to be a non-issue'.

How about actually find out what was going on and then report about it? And even with the story as it is, all the teams are legal, it's the drivers that haven't passed tech.

It's twitter. What do you expect?

I think "Ooh, what are we in the dock for?" was a rhetorical question.

VR knew what the issue was, knew it didn't concern them, and they told Buxton.

It's normal for Virgin Racing to want to avoid reveiling what the issue was with all those other teams, they let Buxton do it.

No idea why you can't see the sense in that, but.. whatever.

What makes you say that? (Just curious)

He's the speed TV pitlane reporter. Listen to any race broadcast and you'll hear him expounding the most ridiculous messgae board type rumors. He is uncious and tries to sensationalize everything.

A new tweeet from him:

Sorry if anyone got upset by tonight's tweets. A genuine but ultimately silly issue, as seems to be de rigeur at the moment. And... Breathe.

VR knew what the issue was, knew it didn't concern them, and they told Buxton.

..but Buxton was the one who messaged them, after Virgin asked him that question (which certainly doesn't look rhetorical, particularly as it was a reply to him saying that Virgin were amongst the illegal teams).

Regardless, either way it was stupid of him, for calling it 'MASSIVE' without knowing what it was, or for calling it 'MASSIVE' when he did know what it was.

Not sure why so many of you are so irate about this non-story. You may have made extreme assumptions from the initial snippet of info provided by Buxton, which is similar to what Buxton himself is guilty of.

p.s. saw Buxton on Speed for the first time over the Silverstone weekend - thought he came across very well

FIA inforcing a rule such as this is merely a demonstration of their power to the teams, imo.

I now noticed that tweet. How can they be illegal?
I though they could run whatever they liked on friday? A tractor if they wanted too!

The cars have too be legal at all times during a GP weekend. It's only in testing they can do what they like.

Looking at the rules...

Appendix III
The label shall be embroidered directly onto the outermost layer of the outer garment
and on the rear of the collar so as to be easily visible. It is recommended that the
embroidery thread comply with 8.4.

It took a while to cotton on to what the problem was, but I'm sure the teams will sew up any loose ends in time for FP1.

I'd say the biggest storm is those whinging about someone on the inside twittering about something that is occuring, in real time. Even if they got it a bit wrong, or didn't know the whole story, I'd rather know about these things and follow the updates as more info becomes available.

I agree. Twitter is breaking the news far quicker than web news sites, you just have to wait for the actual details behind a story sometimes. It's easy to criticize and be brave on a forum though I guess.

Where do you draw the line? The insurance probably depends on the FIA enforcing the rules. If they didn't enforce the rules then they would be liable if anything happened.

It's not news imo if you don't have facts. No one is making life or death decisions over it, so you can afford to wait 10 even 100 minutes until you have all the information that is available(which is different from all the information there is). You'll still beat most webpages and all newspapers.

Exactly.

Sounds like most people on here have absolutely no clue about actually being a journalist. What was Will supposed to do? Sit on the information? It was potentially mega news and he chose to break it quickly. That's what journalists use Twitter for. In fact, I remember hearing a story about how there was a bunch of journalists in a press conference...the person hosting the press conference said something of vast import (it was his plans for next season I think, first time he'd spoken about it), and this journalist in particular decided to wait until he was out of the press conference and then do a live cross to his radio station. He got lambasted by his boss because all the other journalists had Tweeted about it IN THE PRESS CONFERENCE and thus it was no longer breaking news.

Will broke what he thought was going to be a huge story, and he broke it probably the only way he could at the time.

Twitter is how stories develop in modern journalism. If any of you had been watching Twitter when the death of Osama bin Laden broke, you would understand how it works in journalism.

And end up looking like a donkey. Next to nothing about his story turned out to be correct. Imagine if he had gone on TV with that?

I know it's 'only' twitter so the damage is next to nothing, but if he had said "Hearing theres some legality issues with some teams" to give people the heads up while he investigated, that'd be cool. But starting with "OMG! Only three teams are legal!" wasn't even close.

When was it ever a "massive controversy," as Buxton first suggested? It seems more like jumping to conclusions rather than reporting what he knew.

Exactly that. He could have waited just another half hour until he knew more of what was going on. But he had to play the MASSIVE card.

Sounds like most people on here have absolutely no clue about actually being a journalist.

There was journalism before Twitter, and I wouldn't miss it for a second if this service would close down.

Rule number one: The first report is always wrong.

Rule number two: If you live and die by the expectation that the first report is accurate then you should take yourself outside and apply a short sharp uppercut to oneself and wake the **** up.

Twitter is almost as big a waste of human endeavor as Reality TV.
