I'm sure Marussia need someone with money and Heikki brings nothing but talent. But I hope you're right though.

McLaren could have something to do with this. Whitmarsh did say some time ago that he wanted to see Kovalainen at Marussia. But i fail to see what is the benefit for McLaren.

McLaren have a technical partnership with Marussia and having a driver they know in one of the cars helps evaluate that

Such an evaluation may be interesting with a view to combine McLaren's technical package with a 2014 Mercedes engine supply for Marussia.

Keeping Kovalainen in a race seat so he's ready as insurance in case Perez flops? OK so Kova wasn't brilliant when he was in a McLaren seat previously, but he's known to the team and if I was McLaren I'd be looking at him as being at least as good as the other possible just-in-case-Perez-fails replacements.

I'd rather they take Koba than Kova, but can see why they'd go for Kova as the known quantity.

Adam Cooper reports that Force India finally gave Adrian Sutil the nod.

I wonder if this means that Force India will not be switching to Ferrari engines and gearboxes for 2014.

At least the 2013 grid is now complete. Or Razia's deal would have to fall through at the 11th hour.

Just popped up on the BBC live commentary for testing today:

BBC F1 pit-lane reporter Lee McKenzie in Barcelona:
"The rain has eased off and cars are heading out on to the track. It's still very cold here, with a strong wind. But it has been an interesting morning with all the off-track developments, and I have another to add into the mix. In the wake of the obvious problems between Luiz Razia and Marussia, the rumour is that Heikki Kovalainen is having a seat fitting with Marussia tonight."

Looks like Sutil is also getting the "lead" car judging by the number on his cap.

Why would Merc still want him? He's been dicked by two different team mates in two straight years, neither of them superstars, so it's pretty obvious to all by now that he's nothing special. A decent mid grid driver, yes, probably worth a top 14 or 16 drive, but hardly the future for a team aiming at wins and championships.

He won the DTM championship for Mercedes in 2010.

I think between winning the DTM championship and also having the distinction of beating Vettel at one point in F3 made Mercedes think he could do very well in F1. He didn't really deliver however.

Quite. You can see why they thought he was worth a shot, but I see no reason they'd still see him now as their future main man

Well, hard to imagine Mercedes would want di Resta or Sutil over Hamilton or Rosberg. But they might want a back-up plan. It's not sure that neither Hamilton nor Rosberg will want to leave Merc for another team around let's say 2015.

True, but a rookie like Bottas/Gutierrez etc. might catch Mercedes' eye for 2015 if Hamilton or Rosberg leave. Perhaps Mercedes have their eye on Sutil for DTM :drunk:

Sutil is German, Di Resta is not. Rumour has it, Mercedes offered Force India a discount on engines next year if they guaranteed Sutil a seat for 2013 and beyond. Therefore, looks like Di Resta's seat is more under pressure from Bianchi next year than Sutil's.

So it was Mercedes idea to wait until february 27th to announce or Farce India's?
I wanna know which one to blame for such horseshit.

Not really, because Ferrari did the same for Bianchi, which caused Force India's delay. But, Force India has better ties with McLaren (which uses Mercedes engines) than Ferrari.

If one driver was injured, who would they put in the car?

They may want a couple of reserves for their team that happen to actually race week-to-week.

If they were in a tight fight in the WCC every point may count, and when you have Red Bull being able to draft in a Toro Rosso driver (even if Buemi is their reserve, I'd bet they'd put a Toro Rosso driver in the Red Bull and Buemi in the Toro Rosso) and Ferrari having influence with Sauber, it would make sense to have an option to take an experienced race driver if so required.

I don't buy into that "Ferrari wants Bianchi" and "Mercedes wants Sutil"-stuff. Most likely FI is short(er) off money (compared to recent years) and had to weigh and calculate what's best for them. In the end, they went for the save option and re-signed someone they know.

If any of the financially potential top 6 teams - RBR, McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, Mercedes - needs a reserver driver during the season because one of their current lineup drops due to illness/injury/whatever, they're either able to get someone else out of his contract ($$) or sign one of those guys on the sideline who didn't get a race seat this year... these days there're quite a few of them capable of driving an f1 car at decent speed.

In 1999 Ferrari called Salo - who took part in 3 or 4 F1 races the year before - to replaced MSC. Back then they were fighting for the championship.

In 2009, when Massa had his accident, Ferrari - not fighting for the WCC this time - threw in Badoer, who didn't race for almost ten(!) years, before they hired FI's Fisico.

In 1999 Salo had done 2 races for BAR the same year, and full seasons in 95,96,97&98.

In 09, they had little to loose, and Badoer got the chance more like a gift than anything else. And I'm 99.9% sure if Badoer had gotten the chance in every year from 00-08 he would've surprised everyone.

It must be said that Luca's still the world record holder in F1 testing - by quite some margin: http://www.forix.com...=...b=1037&c=50

He did surprise everyone in '09, nobody expected him to be that slow.

It was a notoriously difficult car to drive but I'm sure he lost a lot of speed over the decade, being away from racing year after year. Highly doubt he'd be competitive in 2008. 2000 would've been a completely different story though!

Yeah with the likes of Webber, Massa, Raikkonen and Vettel in the mix. Actually, Vettel might not be involved in the 2014 Silly Season as I think he's got a contract beyond 2014.
