I think this is transcendent enough to be outside the RBR thread. If mods think otherwise, feel free to merge.

The evidence:

I just wonder if rival designers and engineers have stumbled upon these gifs? It's not a given that they knew about that nose!

Mmmm...

'Soft' nose tip so that the camera pods bend a bit lower, redirecting the airflow where you want?

Holy Cow! I saw the flex previously in that video but if you look at the left camera pod when the crew member applies upward pressure
to the right side, it basically folds down!

They wouldn't need to be rubber, they could have only a small number of layers of carbon fibre making the nose cone walls very thin and flexible and/or they could use a resin with a very low glass transition temperature which would be flexible at lower temperatures than normal.

How would that nose shatter if they went head on into a barrier? Do they dare bring this to the next GP?

It looks odd but I'd like to see some equivalent footage of other teams before jumping to any conclusions.

That comment is way too rational for a forum.

The fact that the tip is so flexible doesn't mean the whole nosecone is :)

Nice find!

Would be interested if anyone could dig out a picture of webbers car after the Indian GP I think? I'm sure when watching they said vettel hadn't parked properly and webber nudged him in from behind and I remember the nosecone being a mess and it struck me as odd. Would coincide with this theory of a softer nose (regardless of material used), can anyone find the image or am I just going crazy? Anyone else recall this?

I remember hearing the commentators saying something like "it's nice to get a push from your team-mate", so I know it happened but I was writing here, so wasn't watching.

Yeah that's the one, would be great if someone has a still of it from the sky broadcast, I definitely remember the nosecone being damaged afterwards

A quick youtube-search didn't yield anything. (There's a couple short round-up vids from Buddh.)

I think we had this whole flexi-nose discussion last year already. The actual crash structure is just inside an outer shell that can probably be designed to flex.

Both images by Formula None at F1Technical - from a thread about 2011's flexi wings. The second image is not fact, but just his idea of how this could work.

Also from that thread:

the crash test is about absorbing energy, but those crash tests are fia monitored ?, so while the lack of regigity would be a bonus, its flexability would be obvious ?

I still have the India post race stuff on my HD will see if I can find something.
I do remember the remark about the damaged nose

I found it, it's in Ted's scrapbook and one can vaguely see damage on the right hand side of the yellow part of the cone.
But it's really too dark to see anything clearly

Yes, remember this being where I saw it now! Surely that can't be carbon?

Very interesting. I gotta tell you, I admire RBR & Newey more and more for pushing the rules to the limit. A certain chrome colored team I support would do well if they adopted a less "risk averse" outlook towards these sorts of things and just went for it. Spirit of the rules be damned, there's no such thing!!!

Looking at the video from this weekend, and the damage to Mark's nose-cone from Ted's Notebook, it appears to me that the flexible/rubber area is not a loaded part of the main wing, it is just the front part which seems to be a non-structural section of the main wing. It appears to however certainly help the camera pods move around at high speeds.

...and also, I would think, the wing mounts....

obviously,... this is a movable aerodynamic device...

Actually I take that back. Look at the clip below, it seems that the flex in the camera pod area actually translates in to the whole main wing lowering. Could it be that they have some mechanical means of lowering the nose based on the flex in this front part of the nose? It seems to me that as soon as the Mechanic holds that down, the whole wing lowers.

No. There's no front jack on the car but there is one at the rear, so the car tips forward.

Isn't that just because the rear jack man is lifting the car, Torsion?

-edit - I was too slow :)

The fact that one engineer can twist it like that with his bear hands. I'd like to know the reason if it isn't aerodynamic.

If only there was a camera shot from an RBR from this GP from one of those cameras so we could see if it was moving around a lot at top speed.

It's clearly a deformable nose to absorb DRS signage impact.

Macca knew about Ferrari's flexible bottom after getting the Ferrari designs? May the OP have some inside information?
