Barry, I'm pretty sure the Renault drivers had red shoulder flashes. Depailler didn't race at Monza 79 & it's not Ickx (who did instead) so who is it?Presumably the one bending over the Delage, because the driver in overalls looks like Jabouille, to me.

Neither Depailler nor Jabouille. Besides, the driver doesn't wear the official Tyrrell overall. Wasn't the image shot at Le Mans??Presumably the one bending over the Delage, because the driver in overalls looks like Jabouille, to me.

...Monsieur Depailler checking out a french car, 1979 Monza.

Well it isn't Patrick Depailler. Maybe the guy is from a supporting race as he doesn't look like any of the GP drivers.

The overall the guy wears is the same Jarier (and some other guys) wore. But it isn't "the official" Tyrrell overall (Jarier had the brand Candy printed on it).

Very very unlikely, check it out if you like: http://www.imca-slot...lds-SEMIPRO.htmOne of the Procar guys maybe, Sepp Manhalter or Quester? However Elf on a M1, nah...
There wasn't scheduled an Italian or European F3 race, so it could probably be a driver who competed in the European Formula Renault championship. Several rounds were held in GP weekends, I am sure Monza was one of them in 1977....

I know, but that's a reason to believe that Formula Martini also might have a Monza round in 1979.........but the photo is Monza 79...

I'm glad you like them. There will be more. Be patient as I don't get to spend as much time as I'd like getting them up there to be seen.

The first time I got to see him drive was during practice at the 1976 German GP where Patrick qualified 3rd in the P3/4 five spots ahead of Jody, unfortunately I did not have a camera at the time.
The next time I was scheduled to see Patrick drive was at the 1979 British GP in the Ligier, unfortunately he was still recovering from his hang gliding accident so Jacky Ickx was in his car instead.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Finally at the British GP in 1980 I saw Patrick qualify a promising 8th (seen during practice in this wobbly photo) but record his 7th retirement of the season two weeks before his shocking untimely demise.
For me definitely a driver who never seemed to be in quite the right place at quite the right time to capitalise on his considerable talent and undoubted fighting spirit.

I spent far more time reading about Patrick, than I ever saw him on the track, the first time I heard of him was through my first issue of Motorsport in December 1972 where there was a picture of him making his 2nd appearance in the Tyrrell 004 at the US GP.

David, is this the same article that pops up every decade or so? Something completely new??

I'm not sure when I first saw Patrick race; Crystal Palace Formula 2 probably. The one that sticks in my mind though is at Brands, in 1971 at the Victory meeting, where in the F3 race he won on the road in the beautiful Alpine, with the shaped, louvred engine cover. Sadly he was disqualified, possibly for airbox infringements?
I was living in France when he was killed at Hockenheim. He was very popular and the radio and newspapers gave it a lot of coverage, rightly so.

DQ for overtaking under the yellow. Alpine was not too happy, "robbed" by British stewards, thry felt. The next year, after Patrick's win in the Monaco F3 race, there were again fingers pointed by the Brits about an "illegal" car....

Thank you Stefan!!!
Your article about Patrick Depailler on P1-Mag was great although the detailed information of Patricks last minutes made me shiver.
Anyway, great research.

I remember well when he said in July 1980 “... don’t speak about future, future is for other people....”
I still can’t believe how something like this could happened.
Strange is, that the German police will keep the file Depailler away from public until 2005.
Was the German police file actually made public in 2005? Are its contents public today?
