A good start on this subject is "Double Standards" (Picknett, Prince & Prior pub Little Brown) which covers the story of Rudolh Hess's trip to Scotland in 1941.

Bringing this sort of back on topic after several years ....

Does anyone know the first name of Earl Howe's faithful mechanic Thomas? He gets mentions in all sorts of places like contemporary magazines, Reggie Tongue's diaries and Cholmondeley-Tapper's autobiography, but he's only ever "Thomas" - no first name. Come to that, what was the first name of Sammy Davis' chum Head?

Vitesse, sorry, I haven't a clue about either first name but I have just had a read of this hilarious thread. Just in case any non-British TNFers are left with the impression that virtually everybody on this small island is still in thrall to hereditary privilege and agree with its preservation, we aren't and we don't - not all of us anyway. Some of us may, horror of horrors, even think of ourselves of left of centre. We still like motor sport, though; even cricket too. Sorry, pinko crypto-communist rant over.

Lord Howe...the Curzon link. Wasn't he the father of Piers Courage's wife Sally?

He was indeed. More on her father and her in this earlier thread:

Earl Howe's South African wedding

Some more discussion on the intricacies of the British peerage in this thread:

Names, Titles and Terms

and to clear up any misunderstanding, Earl Howe's surname was Curzon, not Assheton or Penn. Here's what I posted on him in the 'Names, Titles and Terms' thread:

He was Francis Richard Henry Penn Curzon (ie his forenames were Francis Richard Henry Penn and his surname was Curzon). When he took up motor racing in 1928 his father, the 4th Earl Howe, was still alive. As the eldest son Francis was entitled to be known by his father's second title of Viscount Curzon. On his father's death in 1929 Francis inherited all his father's titles, becoming Earl Howe, Viscount Curzon, Baron Howe and Baron Curzon. The Earldom of Howe was the most high-ranking of these, so Francis became Francis, Earl Howe or just plain Francis Howe.

Any reference to him as 'Lord Howe' just indicates that he was a peer, without specifying his rank.

Not forgetting that when he was Viscount Curzon he was elected as an MP, as his father held the family place in the Lords, but when he became Earl Howe he had to vacate his seat as peers cannot be commoners.

Was there ever a book about or by Lord Howe?

Dennis
Forgive me responding to a seven year old question with a question, but what prompted you to ask it? Would you like to read a book about Lord Howe, or write one?

Just to be a spoil sport and to get back to the original subject. A book IS being written at the moment.

You're not being a spoil sport in the least. He was a fascinating bloke, I hope the book covers his Parliamentary career as well as his driving and motor sport admin years, and that it deals with his family too. Who's writing it?

When the world was young and I even younger, I was once sent by Race Control at Oulton to give a message to Rob Walker. I knew he had a 300SL and I was delighted to find a blue and silver example parked at the end of the pits. I marched confidently up to this chap, cap on the side of his head with cigarette in a long holder and holding out the note said "Mr Walker?". "No" was the unsmiling response "he's over there" I did not put 2&2 together until sometime later.

As I'm sure you're aware, Richard, the biography is now out. I've only just started on it, but my first impressions are that it's a fine, well-researched book with lots of excellent photos, and it reveals that the mechanic's name was Percy Thomas.

Yes, my copy arrived yesterday, Tim! It's joined a queue of several unread volumes ... so many books, so little time

I did look for Thomas in the index, but didn't find him - although I see he's named in a photo caption.

Yes, I too was surprised not to find him in the index - he is mentioned many times in the text.

It's a very nicely produced, handsome book - a worthy tribute and a good job, well done.

Cressida Bonas is Francis Howe's great-granddaughter:

Just came across an interesting bit of Earl Howe trivia. During WW2 the garages at Penn House were used to store paintings from the collection of the Imperial War Museum, of which he was a trustee.

The works went to the homes of trustees who said they had space: Ramster Hall in Surrey; Colworth House in Bedfordshire and Penn House near Amersham in Buckinghamshire, where some of the paintings – including John Singer Sargent’s Gassed – were stored in the garage.
