#64 obviously sponsored by a top clothing manufacturer as well as a leading brand of American cigarettes (?) can you imagine today's F1 teams dressed in speedo's for Friday practice ?

Fabulous pictures by Mr Bortsov please pass on my thanks :-)

A couple of questions does any one have any idea how the Formula came to be called Formula Easter ?

Seems to have religious connotations out of step with the atheist leanings of the dominant political parties of the Eastern Bloc at the time.

Secondly slightly off topic I have always has a soft spot for Lada's I learnt to drive in a Fiat 124 Special T among other models,

I came across this Latvian registered Lada the other day and wondered if anyone would be so kind as to confirm the model badge says Huzyau ?

Any details on the pronunciation and meaning would be much appreciated :-)

Clearly related to "east" or "eastern"

This badge says "Жигули" ("Zhiguli") in fact - that was the home market name of the cars produced by VAZ (not in use now). They were exported as "Lada" just to prevent misunderstandings like this ;) This name comes from the Zhiguli Height, a low mointain range in Russia, close to Toliatti, the place where these cars are produced.

Clearly related to "east" or "eastern"

Quite right! I think Formula Eastern is more correct but the people who invented the "international" name for the new racing formula in 1971 were obviously ignorant in English  In the USSR, this formula was called F. Vostok (vostok = East in Russian).

Thanks Alexey I wondered if the model badge might be in the cyrillic alphabet, thanks for the details on it's meaning :-)

Here is the rest of the car just in case anyone was curious what a Zhiguli for the Russian Market looked like :-)

Help we, in the West, have had the name of the Eastern Blocs premier Formula wrong for nearly 40 years ! :rotfl:

Formula East makes a lot more sense :-)

Still at least it is not as smelly a mistake as Rolls Royce trying to sell Silver Mist to the Germans :-)

I think Formula Eastern is more correct

we should ask a native speaker of English.

In Poland this formula was referenced as Formula Ester.

If Vostok means East then Formula East makes sense.

I confess English is not strictly my first language so maybe we need a second opinion :-)

It would be interesting to know how and why the name 'Vostok' was chosen and by whom ?

A question to Grzegorz Chyla: was Podkalicki driving the F. Polonia (i.e. the FIAT-powered) car in Riga? We can see the inscription "FORMULA POLONIA" on the rear wing of his car, and the brilliant Grzegorz Fronczyk's web site on the Polish motor sport history says Podkalicki to drive in this class indeed in the national Polish championship in 1985: http://www.scr.civ.pl/wmp1985.html. But what was the reason to make the F. Polonia entry in the F. Easter race?

OMG! It was almost 3 years ago...

BTW: you can now easily compare two subversions of Promot II - car 7 is older, it has a narrower rollbar and visible shock absorbers, while car #10 is newer, it has a wide rollbar and front shock absorbers hidden inside car's body. But the body panels look identical.

Indeed we have done... Thank you for reminding me, I have completely forgotten about this :drunk: I'm going to correct my web page.

Yes, I have noticed the difference between the front suspension structures of the Promots but I have supposed that the pull rods on Banaszak's car were the self-made modification in order to be internationally competitive, while Podkalicki, driving in national F. Polonia, didn't need for any major modifications of his Promot.

On sunday I was on Poznan racetrack for a first attempt of Formula Easter revival.
Three cars only appeared:
1983 Metalex 1-06 of Jacek Szmidt,
1983 Metalex 1-06 of Jerzy Mazur (car originally driven by Józef Kiełbania)
198? Estonia 21, chassis 13 of Patryk Mikiciuk (car of Kozankov, perhaps the same as above no 68)

See photos:

Spirit is high, many drivers came with no cars, but most of them promissed they will bring cars next time:
From left:
Tomasz Osterloff, Lech Wojciechowski, Marek Bogusz,
Artur Skwarzyński, Józef Gutmacher, Tomasz Jeromin, Jerzy Mazur,
Patryk Mikiciuk, Wiktor Gasenko, Jacek Szmidt, Tomasz Dąbrowski,
Michał Gil, Adam Sowa.
Also Marian Czapka was present, but not on this photo.

Next attempt (no race, just a parade) is planned on June 27th in Poznan. And plans are for competition next year.

Going by what Alexandr Sadovsky just told me, this is the next Kozankov's car, the Estonia 21.10, made in autumn 1987. I'm going to post here tomorrow the batch of photos from 1988, and you'll see it there in its original state. The car that Kozankov drove in 1986 was the Estonia 21M, now being in Tallinn in a rather poor state.

Do they still get raced?

Apparently so the this linked gallery has some 11 pages of pictures of races 2007 - 2009 including Formula Easter, Prototypes (!), and a wonderful selection of Dacia's, Lada's (includung station wagon) Melkus, Polski Fiats, Skoda's, Trabandts, Wartburgs and Zastavas.

The only way I found to navigate from one gallery to another, despite reading German fluently is to change the gal number in the URL from 10 to 21.

Elsewhere on the site there are results for numerous events too :-)

I have a question relating to 1981 season.

There is a classification on:
http://www.puru.de/pff81.html

1. Jiri Moskal CSSR 186
2. Toomas Napa UdSSR 175
3. Jiri Cerva CSSR 157
4. Sandro Kovacz Ungarn 139
5. Jacek Schmidt Polen 138

And I found in the book by Zdenek Cizek 'Automobilovy Pohar Miru a Pratelstvi' that final order was Moskal. Cerva, Szmidt.
Actually it was pointed out to me by Jacek Szmidt, who still has his cup for third place in final classification.

For Sandro Kovacs it is a math error, he has 129 points (places: 13, dnf, 14, 18, 6; points: 32+0+31+27+39), I will report it to Ray.

But what about Napa? He was excluded from final round in Albena (engine).
Does it mean he was also excluded from the whole series?
It is also possible that this exclusion from race could not be dropped as worst result, but was it the case in 1981?

Any clues?

In my version of results Napa, Lím, U. Melkus and Sarap were excuded from final results for various reasons. So your first appraisal ist most probably right.

Contrary to my habit, I'm a bit late with posting a reply to this thread, as I needed some time to browse all available sources of information about the 1981 CPF. So, what have I found there? The official bulletin of the Central Automotoclub contains the following results table:

Place Driver Country Round 1 (CZE) Round 2 (POL) Round 3 (USSR) Round 4 (GDR) Round 5 (BUL) Points
  1	Jiří Moskal CZE 3 / 43 4 / 41 1 / 50 3 / 43 1 / 50 186
  2	Toomas Napa USSR 6 / 39 1 / 50 2 / 46 5 / 40 - 175
  3	Jiří Červa CZE 7 / 38 - 7 / 38 10 / 35 2 / 46 157
  4	Jacek Szmidt POL 12 / 33 8 / 37 - 14 / 31 8 / 37 138
  5	Sandor Kovács HUN 13 / 32 - 14 / 31 18 / 27 6 / 39 129
  6	Edgard Lindgren USSR 14 / 31 11 / 34 19 / 26 16 / 29 14 / 31 125

Russian magazine "Za Rulem" gives absolutely the same final results than Ray's web site: Moskal 186, Napa 175, Červa 157, Kovács 139, Szmidt 138. The top three according to the other magazine, "Avtomotosport", is also Moskal, Napa, Červa. I think this top three must be correct, and the Szmidt/Kovács confusion appeared only due to an ordinary arithmetic error or an erratum. So the only obscure thing is the mentioned Szmidt's cup. Grzegorz, have you seen it yourself?

The book by Zdeněk Čížek was obviously written using the magazines as main sources of information. But don't forget that the 1981 season was full of disqualifications. The magazines used to publish race reports almost forthwith ("Svět motorů", the most widespread Czechoslovak automotive edition, was a weekly) but some disqualified drivers could be rehabilitated later. Perhaps it is worth comparing the articles in "Svět motorů", "Motoristická současnost", and "Stop" with the book and re-calculate the points sums according to those provisional results. Maybe Szmidt's possession of the 3rd place cup has the same origin: at first he was claimed to take a third place overall and later moved to the fourth but the cup has remained in his possession.

Yesterday I received an official 1981 CPF final protocol from Ray Purucker: Moskal 186, Napa 175, Červa 157, Szmidt 138, Kovács 129. I think the question is solved now - except Szmidt's 3rd place cup. Grzegorz wrote that Szmidt himself still doesn't know why he was given it

Love the Autóversenyzők series Alexander. Some amazing camera angles capturing the action from the stages and tracks. What a bonus the footage of F1 in '79 that I do not recall seeing before, and what was that tipper truck racing about ? !

Alexy any idea when seat belts were introduced into the friendship cup ? Looks like someones leg hanging out of the #22 Lada at 52 seconds !

Thanks for sharing guys :smoking:

No idea about the exact date but seat belts were already in use in 1978, going by some photos that I've seen.

Maybe the drivers seat broke or got loose.

As far as I understood, the video is about the history of motorsport in Hungary on its way to hosting the F1 Grand Prix. So the truck racing (truck cross) was a part of that history. Such races were very popular in Soviet Union (and still are in Russia and Baltic countries using the same cars!), but I have never known Hungary had truck cross as well.

Is there anyone who speaks Russian or Hungarian who might be able to help ?

If I remember right in 1976(77?) the Soviets invited us to a military-exercise area in the Bakony-mountains in Hungary(I do not remember for the exact location, there were many same places near Gyulafirátót, Hajmáskér, Tapolca, Várpalota...)

Few shots from this event from my private archives >

It was a kind of 'exhibition' for wider public, Hungary based Soviet military units had a 'local-championship' then with UAZ jeeps and Zil trucks.
Next year(at least in 1978 sure) in Hungary started the local Hungarian truck-cross championship, with teams from the Volán-company(Hungarian state owned haulage contractor then), with about twenty teams from nearly all Hungarian counties...

I wonder if there is an internet site that lists where the events might be held ?

As I know there are no any Net-site or other database about truck-cross behind the 'Iron-Curtain' pre 1990.

Great pictures, RobertS!

You never stop to learn. Now I wonder if any other countries had truck cross as well.

Thank you Robert for the amazing pics and information looks like I'll have to keep my ears very close to the ground if I am ever going to get the chance to see a Lorry X event.

When I was a teenager I saw a funny 'B' movie called 'Hell Drivers' in 'Vista Vision' with several speeded up scenes of similar 'tipper' trucks I never imagined anybody would use similar vehicles in competition for real !

Here is an amazing footage of CPF racing: YouTube link

In Hungarian. Other parts can bee seen in the menu to the right of the video (9 in total).

Indeed it is in Hungarian. These are the parts of the film 'Autóversenyzők', which means 'Racing drivers'. I have the full film on DVD. (It's not on official DVD, but a conversion from a VHS tape.)

IMO the best photo of this album is the first one, with two Promots - despite the fact that our knowledge and archives are growing, Polish race cars in the CPF are still poorly known, and each extra photo of them is valuable.

The MTX 1-06 no. 3 still get raced in Poland (see Grzegorz's photos above), and the Estonia-MADI 03 (no. 71) is now back to tracks, too - after 20+ years of oblivion :)

Let's see
23 Jiri Micanek
behind him it might be Toomas Napa in Estonia 20, but I think actually Napa was well in front in his brand new Estonia 21?
behind car 77 is what looks like 58 and Kesjar Csaba
3 is Jerzy Mazur's MTX 1-06
4 is Tomasz Jeromin in Promot II
2 is Jerzy Kiełbania in MTX 1-06

car 4 was driven by Mazur in 1983. In 2010 it has returned to him, currently it is being restored.
Mazur did not find his #3 car, but now owns #2 car on photo above.
During september 2010 meeting in Poznan I took a group photo of Kiełbania, Mazur and Jeromin.

The yellow and white car behind Mičánek's MTX is Alexandr Medvedchenko's Estonia 20 (no. 79). Napa in his Estonia 21M (no. 72) had passed this bend by the moment the photo was taken.

Hello nelutzu, welcome to TNF (and particularly to this thread) Great to find at last a person well informed in the history of the CPF rounds in Romania. As for me, the main unknown thing about Romanian participation in the Cup are still their F. Easter single-seaters. I still don't even know their exact names - there's only very doubtful information. In your files, I see the name "Dacia-EC-1984". Is it trustworthy enough? And does this mean Dacia engines on these cars?

Just wondering, what sort of crowds did these races get? Many thousands or was it a select few with a keen interest?

As to Romania, the races in Resita were extra-popular - there were crowds of people from all over the country. The CPF events in Riga gathered thousands of spectators, too - due to the convenient position of the race circuit, active and skilful advertising, and local people's traditional interest in motor sport. On the contrary, the races in Kiev used to be held per se.

Yes, the name is right drivers, and license number, only for CPF 1984,
#111 GHERGHEL CONSTANTIN /Rum/ Dacia-CE-84
#111 PETEANU EUGEN /Rum/ Dacia-CE-84
#117 GHEDEON TIBERIU /Rum/ Dacia-CE-84
#120 CIURCIU TIBERIU /Rum/ Lada-CE-84

were assigned numbers as: at 100 -120 for Romanian drivers...
- #111, that he is the champion for the Romanian championship Formula EASTER 1983 ( Gherghel Constantin)
- Vice Champion will receive #112, and so for the next championship winners in Romania ... I hope you understand...
-and as for Touring Gr A2 ... Nicu Grigoras is the champion(#1) for 1983 in Romania, he will receive the CPF number #101

...and "Dacia-CE-84" = Dacia(engine)- CE(Chassis type/ model/ symbol)-84(Cars manufactured in 1984)

I think that Romanian system of race numbers assignment was the unique one in the CPF - thank you for telling us of it!

If you have any photos of the mentioned Dacia-CE-84 car, could you please post them to this thread? And is it possible to identify the types of Romanian cars on the photos on the previous pages? According to very doubtful info that I have, there were cars called PE-82, KN-84, GT-86, GT-88, NW-88 (all with Lada engines). It is curious to know that the GT was driven by Tiberiu Gedeon, PE by Eugen Peteanu, and so on. So perhaps those letters were related to drivers' names?

In a way you're right... This week I will meet me PONTA MIRCEA and EUGEN PETEANU, will take the right information, and only then I can say with certainty how they were ... ok?
I would not want to post here unverified information....Only then we'll watch photos, and set the car that bore the name..
