Yes, I have HW - over a quarter of a century ago! 1979/80 if memory serves me. For once I had a "home" advantage for that picture as I live in the IOM.

Following on from recent thread regarding riders who have tried their hand at 2 & 3 wheeled sport...

Chris Vincent, British 125cc champion against Bill Ivy and winner of innumerable races at all levels in sidecars
Mick Broom, who I believe held club cicuit lap records simultaneously at Cadwell on two & three wheels
Les Judkins, still racing, although I believe on two wheels only now.

Also, George O'Dell raced both, simultaneously I think. Owen Greenwood - perhaps before his sidecar days.

Hi folks, very busy at the moment but can't leave this unanswered.....although I don't have any very recent infos, but last I heard Christian was still professionally involved with Yamaha France . He stopped his Grand Prix career at the end of the 1990 season to take up a role as racing activities manager or something, but he still put the helmet on now and then to enter selected races....most famously he won the 1994 Bol d'Or 24 hours endurance, partnering his brother Dominique on what was apparently a very emotional family achievement. A while later he also fulfiled an old dream by taking part , "just for pleasure" , in the 1996 Suzuka 8-hours with his long time Yamaha factory rider colleague and friend ( and fellow old-age pensioner ;) ) Tadahiko Taira , onboard a tuned-up Yamaha 850 TRX (!) , finishing 24th .

That was his last official race as far as I know, but since then he's appeared regularily in various "nostalgia" classic meetings aboard vintage factory Yamaha's - at the Coupes Moto-Légende, or the Spa biker's Classics like in the picture below from 2005 .....

Again following on the thread of the riders on two and three wheels:-

Bob MacIntyre - passengered for Pip Harris once.

And didn't John Surtees passenger for his father, possibly grass track though?

Sorry, both are before this thread date, (1969 on), but hope you wont mind.

Yes, it was a bike secured for Paul by Barry, a "spare" machine that Barry had from the factory.

Derick Catters on John Williams left, second row.
Dear me, who´s the fellow with the Yellow helmet and baby blue leathers? Seem totally oblivious of the fact that the race has been started.

Thanks for the update Philippe! Good to hear that he's still riding. I remember seeing him clowning around in the pits at Kyalami (1994 I think?), taking the mickey out of another rider, seemingly a great character.

With an Aermacchi and what appear to be a couple of Seeleys either side on the front row - gotta be a club meeting hasnt it?

I've no idea if this was ever done during this period - but is it a handicap race? The guys on the front row appear to be starting to push hard, whereas the others, particular blue leathers, seem less interested. On reflection seems a bit unlikely. Some of you may remember handicaps were commonly held for sidecar races in the early/ mid sixties.

Hi Russell,
Bill was never one for getting his arse off the seat much, and yes it does look a bit bizarre, but he probably won this one against pretty good opposition so it must have worked. Not pretty though is it?

I think I can I.D. the bloke nodding off on the second row (number 121). Looks very much like Roger Martin astride his ex-Derek Best Petty Manx (bike later aquired by Richardd Cutts I believe, although he mostly rode his Seeley at the time). 103 looks like Ron Mellor (on his ex-Sanby Kuhn Seeley) - seemingly wearing white overalls over his leathers???

PS: The name Chris Bladon rings a bell for that nice Seeley on the front row (104), but I'm not sure.

Jeff Crookbain on the front row far right, and its Brian Flak behind in red and white helmet a la Chatterton.

The guy in stars and stripes is not Lunde I think I have a picture of him somewhere? Will have a look.

Hi Herr, Yeah, its obviously works for him. I saw a photo fairly recently of an even more extreme version of this sort of thing, again by someone on a 'classic' bike. I wonder if there is some theory behind it ? Actually it reminds me of the style of many Italian riders from the 50's and 60's - perhaps they were less extreme. I wonder why I attribute this only to Italians? Does anyone out there agree?

Definitely agree, I've seen a few shots of the great Renzo Pasolini and he seemed to prefer leaning the bike down towards the limit whilst keeping his body more upright.

Dunno if this was an Italian thing tho........

Yes, Paso is a good example. Early on Agostini had a tendency to ride like that. If you look at photographs from much earlier, riders such as Pagani and Massetti also did it. To my mind it has always looked very unatural, and some of the more extreme exponents in present day classic racing look most odd indeed.
