I am completely ensconced in Peter Darley's book "Jim Clark Life At Team Lotus" a superb stroll through the sixties in a time when I was a young teenager. I am currently on the Brands Hatch Chapter, it does feature Oulton, Snetterton, Silverstone,Crystal Palace and Goodwood also.The memories come flooding back, the old dressing room in the paddock, the great August Bank Holiday meetings when Jim would be racing in four cars (I fell asleep during the F2 race, because I flown back from France the previous day, and arrived home in the early hours :yawn: I remember sitting on the bonnet of dad's Cortina on South Bank). A truly spectacular set of photos, not yet seen before and some taken from unusual track positions. I also love the fact that they are in black and white, period you might say. Alongside each race photographed is a cover picture of the corresponding Race Programme (of which I have nearly all, but cannot find.......)

Such a superb book, I think this is likely to be my all time favourite, as I wander through I can hear the fab four singing "Help"...it really triggers the memories. Fantastic!! Thank You Peter

Personal circumstances led me to selling my complete collection (about 120 books at the time that included some early Autocourse and Automobile Years) for £45 in 1970.

I have been flicking through one of my recent purchases, Racing in The Rain by John Horsman. It looks fascinating. Before I read it in earnest, can people confirm whether it is really as good as the reviews suggest?

A brilliant book, by one of the best, my favourite time for the Gulf Team was the GT40 and 917s, but it is a superb read and great photos also. I received mine as a Xmas present, along with the perfect partner for it, the Vic Elford story.

Tom, It never crossed my mind that the damn thing might actually be worth something some day, especially when the money offered seemed like a good deal at the time. Plus, it was evident that I would not be needing a car for a long while...... and it was a bit clapped out at the time as well, so.... Let us not mention the 1964 Mercury Marauder with the 427 that was also had for pennies by someone making me an offer for a car that was driving me crazy.....

What i like about the book is that it goes into great detail about the times both before and after the "glory days", and also covers some adventures in USAC. It has really re-fired my interest in sportscar racing from that period. Highly recommended.

Both books are superb, they really do compliment each other, the complete tale is told and in the case of the Vic Elford book, it even discloses that he lived in Ash village. 28 years ago I had my wedding reception there in the village hall A superb journey through club rallies to the highest pinnacle of racing, and still he showed his support of 7Oaks M.C.

No. Only the first three in the series were published.

mmmmmmmmmm....not quite. Tangerine (non-original) with black, 1958 Super. Loved it. The car I most regret selling (after the 1973 2.7RS, that is). I bought it in San Diego in 1970 and sold it in Florida in 1973. I've had a few others since then, but none ever satisfies quite like the first.....

I recently purchased a book called Maranello ...Images between the old & the new millenium by a native of the town, Luca Giovanelli. It basically consists of photographs of Maranello as it once was and as it is now; not just the Ferrari works but the town in general. I highly recommend the book for those who are interested not just in Ferrari, but also the environment in which the company was born and still flourishes. The book is in Italian, English and German.

The book is not widely distributed, and if any TNFers would like more information I encourage you to contact Sr. Giovanelli directly at lucarita6971@hotmail.it His English is quite good, so don't worry if you don't speak Italian. I found him to be very accommodating, and I'm sure he would be glad to send some images from the book if asked.

I'm afraid that this was a premature announcement by, shall we say, an over-enthusiastic publisher.
Neither Paul or myself have started writing this book yet, although we have plenty of research material, and we still feel that there is a market for a book that covers these fabulous cars in detail that goes beyond the championship races.
In the meantime, if you are looking for new Ferrari related books, there is my latest - "Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer - the Road & Race Legends" by Fiorano Publishing. www.fiorano-publishing.co.uk.

On this occasion it's not Amazon's fault. The publisher has registered the book with ISBN, who in turn notify Amazon and others, although we don't even have a signed contract with this publisher.
We hope it will be fascinating, and full of new and previously unpublished photos and information.

Have just finished "Winning is not Enough".
Did it change my views/opinion on JYS as a person (previously very positive but not at the higher level of a few) or a driver? Overall, no. Some very positive images of the most personal kind, some negative in the field of his assessment/judgement of others. One (non-motorsport) industry figure I have personally found behaving despicably to customers is a man JYS seems to consider a near saint.
There are those who might cast accusations of fawning cronyism about some of the "people" comments. Probably not justified but there is a slight flavour of it. The most hardened Royalist might baulk a little at some of the enthusiasm shown in that area.
What the book does underline is the limited period of actual competition driving to be covered, compared to the rest of life. I wanted more revellations from that period. Some of the events are now long enough ago to expect more but it is clearly not his style. I also did not really want to read an extended advert for the Mayo Clinic, an institution of undisputed excellence maybe but one far removed from the aspirations/affordability of ordinary people and thus something of an irrelevance to them.
Well I'm sure that's upset somebody, despite it being positive overall...

Some good points. My one main criticism of the book would be his unquestioning praise of some of the people JYS did business with. I would also have welcomed more analysis of those relationships which were not quite so rosy.

Agreed. I'll post a more comprehensive critique tomorrow, but the fact that Max Mosley features only once in the index goes a long way to illustrate your point. Bernie features a few more times, but it somehow comes across as damning with faint praise ....

most definetly there is lot of new material and it is very well presented and packaged in hardcover and with a limited edition leather bound edition with metal EE badge on cover and apart from that you can never have enough books anyway!

I called in this afternoon and the place was full of unopened boxes of new stock from the printers and another delivery was in progress. I confirmed 40% applies.
For anyone thinking of visiting them, admission is via a dodgy-looking doorway next to "Bojangles" and then only after pushing an intercom button to get the door unlocked!

One more new book with Hamilton and McLaren it is "The Drivers" available from the Bruce Mclaren Trust.
In this case the Hamilton is the Kiwi of Hamilton jet fame who raced a Bentley at Brooklands. The book is about fifty kiwi racing drivers, so clearly Mclaren Hulme and Amon are in it, but also Thackwell, Ganley, Shelly, McRae and Nicholson (other kiwi GP drivers) as well as drivers who excelled in lower formulas.
