Great idea to list the ones that were announced but never published. A few to start with:

-Ferrari: Racing in North-America 1948-1988 (Nowak-Finn); announced by Dalton Watson
-Les Anglaises au Mans, Vol. 2 (Pascal); EPA
-Carlo Abarth Foto Storia (Cosentino); FAZA
-24 Heures du Mans 1923-1992, Tome 3 (Moity-Teissedre); Bartholomey

Proviz,

the last one was (re-)published last year: the 3-volume Le Mans 1923-2010. So I would delete this one??

But the others , you mention, I have almost forgotten over the years!!Thank you for reminding us!

Regards Michael

No, this is a different volume. The idea was that the 2 volume story would be supplemented by a third that would include the non-qualifiers and so on - I guess that by the time they got it ready they decided to update the whole lot instead. The 3 volume set is very different from the 2 volume as well, lots of new photos and so on.

Good idea Frank!
I've always liked the three slim hardbacks produced for Donington and Tom Wheatcroft in the mid-1970s: The Grand Prix Tyrrells (Doug Nye), The Maserati 250F (Denis Jenkinson) and The 4-Wheel Drives (Alan Henry).
'In preparation', according to the flyleaf, were 'Supercars for Supermen - German GP Cars of the 1930s (David Hodges), The Coopers (Cyril Posthumus) and The Eagles (Karl Ludvigsen). I've never seen these titles in the 'Donington Monomarque' series - were they ever published? If not, I wonder how much work had been done by the authors before the titles were cancelled - I know KL has written more recently about Dan Gurney's Eagles but I can't remember whether David Hodges wrote about the 1930s. And I know Doug Nye's book on Coopers, but not one by Cyril Posthumus.

I guess the latest 3-volume opus does cover a lot of what was intended for the original "Tome 3", but unfortunately it only randomly deals with the Test Day, which was supposed to be one of the key subjects in "Tome 3".
But I agree, the authors' ideas, at least, may have been satisfied with "Le Mans 1923-2010".

Seeing Cyril Posthumus's name reminds me. I bought his German GP book at Goodwood. With the rain it got, well, damp. Not enough to stick the pages together but enough to make it smell decidedly musty.
Does anybody know a way of getting rid of the musty smell? Suggestions so far:
Sunny windowsill;
Airing cupboard;
Microwave (Someone suggested but I'm dubious);
'Brut' spray (or similar)

As it's on semi-gloss paper, I'd be very careful! I'd suggest fanning out any still damp pages and leaving the book in a normally heated room - not an airing cupboard and DEFINITELY NOT in a microwave - until the pages have dried properly. Direct sunlight or excessive heat could cause the pages to crinkle.

Then try the suggestions here: http://reviews.ebay....000000002151191

It's a problem I had once, and sorting it out isn't something to be rushed. I asked an antiquarian bookseller friend, he advised leaving the book open somewhere near a window, turning the pages as each pair dried. It took several weeks, the book was almost as good as new in the end, though a few pages were slightly cockled. It's currently residing under a couple of feet of other books to try to flatten it.

Oh well, never mind. Thank you Vitesse.
About twenty years ago I remember Donington selling off many copies of the three original books. Perhaps they over-committed back in the 1970s, or were disappointed by sales at the time, and cancelled future titles.

Let's add:
Gilles Villeneuve (Formula 1 Legends) by Pierre Menard and Jacques Vassal. In fact, there were to be a number of others in addition to the Lauda, Fangio, Moss, Ascari, Prost and Senna volumes that were published. They are listed on the fly leaf of the extant volumes but I don't have one to hand to list the rest.

Red Mist by Nigel Stepney. Whatever happened to him and his "where the bodies are buried" book then?

Formula 1 Yearbook 2009 by Luc Domenjoz. A real shame they stopped publishing this yearbook in English. Fortunately I managed to get the French edition.

I am still patiently (more-or-less!) waiting for Inside Track by Phil Hill, Steve Dawson and Doug Nye (see http://philhill.com/?page_id=117). Although I signed up for updates about 3 years ago I haven't had any so far...

I was also thinking of a "books in the works" list to help us keep track of projects that are in gestation. BRM V4 would go there.

Others "in the works" mentioned in these pages but yet to appear include :

Lord Howe - author unknown - mentioned June 2009

GP Alfas - Simon Moore - mentioned August 2009 as being due in 2010, the occasion of Alfa's centenary

Should we also have a list of books that were published but shouldn't have been?

And I'm sure that every author has a list of books that he or she would like to write--or perhaps began then dropped.

A friend of mine went along to the Bill Boddy day at Brooklands and found himself at lunch with Mr and Mrs Tony Brooks. They were both very charming and CASB happily chatted away about racing in his time.

The good news is that the manuscript of his autobiography is written. He is choosing photographs and writing captions. His grandchildren persuaded him that he must get his story down on paper and he has chosen to do it alone rather than with a motoring historian.

I will be early in line for a copy.

You could try e-mailing Harper Collins. I agree that a publisher's blurb should include that sort of basic information. if they get enough of that type of request, they might appreciate the need.

Ok, here we go. I will post three lists of books that were either announced but never published; announced but then published with a different title; or are still being worked on (maybe). I volunteer to maintain and update these lists periodically as more information become available. Please post or send me a PM with corrections!

This may have already been mentioned here, but if not:

I don't know how one becomes a reviewer, but certainly many TNF "bookers" would be excellent at it.

Re Boddy's Montlhéry book: JM Dent owned Motoraces Book Club at the time and seem to have purchased the remaining stock of the original Cassell edition - I have seen Motoraces leaflets offering it as a free gift to new subscribers.

"Racing Cars and Recordbreakers 1922-39" by TR Nicholson. The only pre-War volume of Blandford Press' "Cars of the World in Colour" series which didn't appear. I believe there were plans for a post-War series too, but these were probably cancelled when Warne produced their Olyslager series.

Another "never published" is an English edition of Elly Rosemeyer's "Mein Mann Der Rennfahrer": only one copy known to have existed, having turned up when the library of Earl Howe was sold. Presumably a review copy or proof, it was purchased by Chris Nixon. Whereabouts now unknown?

"Graham Hill Scrapbook Volume 2"?

Ok, here we go. I will post three lists of books that were either announced but never published; announced but then published with a different title; or are still being worked on (maybe). I volunteer to maintain and update these lists periodically as more information become available. Please post or send me a PM with corrections!

Superb work! Many thanks.

How about Dick Seaman, the last British hero? Allegedly contains allegations (hopefully that'll keep m'learned friends happy!) that Seaman was working as a British spy and that...allegedly...the 'team doctors' ensured he didn't survive his crash at Spa.

Was listed here and there, was it suppressed, ever written, never written?

Any conspiracy theories welcome!

I was hoping nobody would mention that! It was discussed here at some length, but I suspect that the opprobrium heaped upon it by real motor sport historians meant that the publishers took a long hard look at the synopsis, did a bit of perfunctory research and then concurred with DCN that it was complete and utter UMBALA.

Two from White Mouse Editions listed on the back flap of "Mercedes Benz Grand Prix Racing 1934-55":

"The Automobiles of Gabriel Voisin" by Pascal Courteault, ISBN 0-904568-51-2. Eventually published as "Automobiles Voisin", in French, with a separate English translation by Peter Hull: ISBN 0-904568-72-5.

"Alfa Romeo 158/159" by DS Jenkinson. ISBN 0-904568-29-6. Never published.

Aha....I must have missed that, as a relative newbie here...thanks for the clarification...

Books that never were - These books were probably never published, and likely never will be:

"Motor Racing - The Hulton Getty Picture Collection". Announced in 2001.

This was published in 2001 by Könemann, with text by Brian Laban in English, German and French as "Motor Racing: The Early Years/Die Anfänge des Motorsports/Les Débuts de la Course Automobile". Getty Images packaged the book and are credited on the jacket and in the bibliographic details. ISBN 3-8331-1354-5. Title is slightly misleading, as the "early years" end in 1960!

Books in the works? Still some hope that these may appear.

"Ferrari 330P4 - The Complete Story" by Nathan Beehl & Paul Skett. ISBN 0954694635. Listed on Amazon UK. AS of 29-Nov 2007, Beehl says that book has not been started yet, but still hopes to do it. Link.

There's a little story behind this one. The 330P4 book was discussed - once- with a publisher who was keen, BUT terms were not discussed and a contract was never signed. Neverthless the would-be publisher decided to ISBN the title, and from there it went into the public domain. It is still a book that I would like to do, but I have two more Ferrari titles out in the next six months, and I am also working on another for about 12 months time. So regretably not much time for P4s at the moment.

As recorded in the Introduction to Chris Nixon's "Rosemeyer! " the ex-Earl Howe book is in private ownership.

Eoin Young in "It Beats Working" says that a German collector bought another copy in a second-hand bookshop in Zurich in 1960.

I've met the chap who bought the ex-Howe copy - sadly he didn't want to sell it....

Nathan,

Can you give us any details?

Jack.

Hi Jack
Should have done that in my previous post. The next two are very specialised:-
The first is a very comprehensive look at early Ferrari brochures 1945 - 1964. So covering a similar area to Merritt, but with much more detail, some corrections and in full colour.
The second is about the early official Ferrari b/white postcards. Again, this is the most comprehensive look at these rare items. The book will include full-size scans of approx. 200 postcards. It will include many that have never been seen before. We're aiming for February 2012 for both books.
The 3rd has to remain under wraps for now. More news nearer the time.

Nathan -- Do you want to keep this on the "Book in the works" list or would you prefer to have it in the "books that never were" section? Your call.

I was working from memory when I said Nixon bought it: I'd have dug my copy out to check that, but my lounge makes DCN's study look tidy! :p

You should leave it on "in the works" then hopefully it will act as encouragement!

Will it upset anyone if I leave it "in the works", as I would like to write it one day.
