I'm sorry to say the book project has been put on hold as I'm simply not a person to get things done. Instead I have shared a lot of my research regarding group A over at 10-Tenths and in return learned so much more.

The lists have been updated to reflect recent information. You can use these links to directly access the lists:

books that never were
books with title changes
books in the works

Thanks for all of the contributions.

I have not yet included the Richard Seaman book brought up by motorbookworm and vitesse2 as I want to make sure it is really defunct and is not being confused with Chris Nixon's "Shooting Star - The Life Of Richard Seaman". As an amusing side note, "The Last British Hero" is still listed on the US Amazon.com site, with a publication date of December 31, 2035! link.

A book that can be removed from the 'in the works' list is McLaren: The Wins published by Coterie Press. Thanks to this extensive discussion I followed the links and bought a copy direct from the McLaren Shop online. I am very pleased to say that it arrived this morning and it is a marvellous looking piece of work. Every race win up till the end of 2010 is covered to some extent and the book is very glossy. Dare I say worth the £50 it costs.

A "never will" section would be the most precise description, but I don't know the catagories - thank's for asking!

This may have already been mentioned here, but if not:

http://www.speedreaders.info/

I don't know how one becomes a reviewer, but certainly many TNF "bookers" would be excellent at it.

Jack

Jack

I have to admit to a certain interest regarding speedreaders. They reviewed my book, and I write reviews for them. It’s run by a gentleman in Arizona named Sabu Advani, who also edits The Flying Lady, the magazine of the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club. The Flying Lady has also reviewed my book, and I’ve written for it and given a talk at an RROC Annual Meet in Toronto.

With that out of the way, I assume most TNFers who contribute regularly to this thread will know about speedreaders, but for those who don’t, I think it’s a very valuable, complimentary resource to TNF. Here, the talk is mostly about what’s about to be published or has been, and what’s been bought or landed on a doorstep and been flicked through. I also value TNF as a quick way of establishing from people whose opinion I trust the best book on a given subject.

Speedreaders, on the other hand, publishes full-blown reviews of 800 – 1,500 words. It covers not only historic and current motor racing, but the whole range of transport – cars, planes, ships, you name it. It’s a wonderful facility.

To become a reviewer, check out http://speedreaders....ith_pub_003.htm.

You certainly should Jack. I’d like to know more about the Ferrari books on your shelves!

Rgds

Paul

Today I finally got my expl. of Spurrings LM 49-59 and Parkers F1 in Camera 50-59 . Very nice books following their usual lines , decent prices and lots of good pictures , many new ones ! Well worth their money ..........but why oh why........so many , 20+ plus 30 pictures over more than 1 page. It spoils much of my joy , cant even do a good copy of them .! A pity !

Ruhestein - Bergrennennen 1946

It's in German (sorry). A book on the FIRST race (hillclimb) in the Black Forrest after WWII held in July 1946.
The sensation is that after more then 60 years they found 7 rolls of black and white Agfa film with photos of the event...

I've just placed my order for Kent Patrick's book on W B Thompson, the winner of three Australian Grands Prix in the early thirties... and who missed out on a fourth by a mere 26 seconds, I might add...

John Medley has been waxing lyrical about this tome since he got it last week, so I figured it must put me in closer touch with a lot of history of racing in Australia in that era. Its scope is far broader, of course, than the AGP book, and it's apparently quite a large publication with a lot of pictures. Many, too, from Thompson's private collection.

It does sound like Kent put a lot of work into his research, so I have had little hesitation in writing the cheque and posting it off to him for my copy.

Coming in September:

Porsche Bergsport: Europa-Bergmeisters... 1957 - 1969 von Jörg-Thomas Födisch, Rainer Rossbach, Michael Behrndt und Jost Neßhöver
EUR 29,90

On the European Hillclimb championship..Same authors as for the 908,917 books...

Link: http://www.amazon.de...

Best regards Michael

Got this in the post today. Despite title, the publicity may lead one to think this is a more general history of the hill-climb championship, but it is 90% Porsche. Contents include brief profiles of 22 outstanding stars of the hills, summaries of all qualifying rounds 1957-1969, descriptions of Porsche's official cars & main opposition, interviews with Hans Herrmann and Eberhard Mahle, introductions of main venues plus results.
Important addition to any Porsche library - and very much recommended at only €22,43 from The Book Depository (postage incl.). Thanks for the tip Tuboscocca!

Thanks proviz, especially for the review!!
We have to be thankful, as there is very little printed on the very interesting European hillclimb championship..
BTW: bookdepository (now owned by amazon offers the German books with approx. 20% reductions incl.postage worldwide). As we have fixed prices in Germany ,very interesting!!

Hi Jack
Should have done that in my previous post. The next two are very specialised:-
The first is a very comprehensive look at early Ferrari brochures 1945 - 1964. So covering a similar area to Merritt, but with much more detail, some corrections and in full colour.
The second is about the early official Ferrari b/white postcards. Again, this is the most comprehensive look at these rare items. The book will include full-size scans of approx. 200 postcards. It will include many that have never been seen before. We're aiming for February 2012 for both books.
The 3rd has to remain under wraps for now. More news nearer the time.
Nathan

The brochure book was already sighted , as a 'prototype' at the Padova Classic exhibition (27-30 Octobre 2011)!!
Looks great! Price???

It works the other way, too. If you buy books from a UK address, Amazon.de automatically deducts the VAT, as do the more clued-up business sellers on eBay.de. I assume Amazon.fr do the same.

Vitesse2 --didn't know that!!
The main difference is that in UK you have RRP, but nobody seems to bother...You can find new books for up to 50% reduced prices..
In Germany the law is very strict. Recommended prices are absolutely fixed. Some Guys do (artificially) remainder new books...but that is another story!!

I checked the non-starters page by page in my 1967 printed edition (covers the 1966 race) and my 1994 printed edition (covers the 1994 race) and they are identical in layout and cars/drivers named and pictured.

The 1994 cover for helioseism. I haven't seen many myself, but that probably means little about their availibility.

He has done in the past, but hasn't visited so far this year. Here's his last post about the book:

Hi there, yes its delayed because its still only 90% finished, both me and Gav have been flat out on other projects (in my case lots of em!). The track listing on Amazon and Veloce is incorrect, but not saying what is in and what is out. Hopefully there will be a bit of a preview of the new one in Brighton in the new year - also we may do similar at a TNF gathering in Herts.

The Veloce date of Sept 2011 is pessimistic - it'll be out by then at the latest

If anybody is after a copy of "TT Pioneers", Robert Kelly's book on the pre-Great War Tourist Trophy races on the Isle of Man - long out of print and rare even second-hand - it appears that Eddington Hook (better known as an Open University book supplier) still have some new stock at the very reasonable price of £15.72 + postage. To find it search for "T.T. Pioneers" (including the full stops!)

Reading between the lines, this appears to be a biography of the semi-fictionalized, dramatized variety, containing accounts of conversations and encounters which "could" have occurred. Descriptions such as "a vivid and atmospheric recreation" make me think the author will play a bit fast and loose with the facts and not let them get in the way of a good story.

Still, I could stand an entertaining read and the subject matter is square in the middle of my area of interest. I ordered my copy a few days ago and it should arrive later this week!

I'm about 1/3 through it, and that's the way it's reading. On the other hand, the notes appear to document the book faily well (I haven't read them in detail yet). One weakness is the small number of photographs. Assuming the book is aimed at an audience less intensively involved than the typical TNF member, many readers will wonder about what these cars, drivers and tracks looked like. That was probably more an editorial decision rather than any fault of the author.

Still, I've learned a few things so far, making it a worthwhile read.

Historica Selecta have just produced the Classic Car Auction Year Book 2010/2011, latest version of the Bolaffi Catalogues which were first published in 1995

Adolfo Orsi and Raffaele Gazzi have compiled records of all sales held by the major acution houses in 2010, not only listing each make and model, and the prices realised, but with detailed analysis of the market and trends over the past 18 years

The auction houses and dealers might prefer otherwise, but the book is available to interested private individuals, either direct from the publishers in Italy at €44.90, or from Chaters here in the UK at £39.99 + p&p

For those London or Home County TNFers who frequent this forum's book thread I thought the following work might be of interest, especially if you like details and pictures of the arcane and long gone.

LONDON'S DISUSED UNDERGROUND STATIONS
J. E. Connor
Capitol Transport Publishing (www.capitaltransport.com)
ISBN 978-1-85414-250-4

It was first published in 1999 as an A5 paperback and this is the latest enlarged version reprinted in 2008.

It's not about old racing cars/drivers/circuits et al so my apologies for introducing it here but I found it fascinating and hope others will do too.

There's a full-page advertisement in today's Autosport for Tom Rubython's latest book, In the Name of Glory: 1976 the Greatest Ever Sporting Duel, apparently on sale from this weekend (but already available from Amazon). As he recently authored a biography of Hunt, I'm wondering if it's just a rehash of the relevant parts of that book, or if it's a genuinely original effort.

It was first published in 1999 as an A5 paperback and this is the latest enlarged version reprinted in 2008. It's not about old racing cars/drivers/circuits et al so my apologies for introducing it here but I found it fascinating and hope others will do too.

I spent a good half hour some time ago looking through the original version in Borders. I agree with Paul's comments. It is the sort of book which answers lots of questions and educates. Good social history too.

Can anyone confirm that the following books either do exist, or were never published? They are listed at the back of "Davidstow - A History Of Cornwall's Formula 1 Race Circuit" by Peter J. Tutthill, published by West Country Motor Books in 1996. Thanks in advance.

I've got a copy of the Davidstow book, don't know about the others but the Trengwainton one sounds familiar.

Neither ever appeared.

In your search for "books that never were", you might find COPAC useful: it's an ever-expanding unified search engine for academic and institutional libraries: among the databases it searches are the five UK copyright deposit libraries (BL, Bodlean, Cambridge, National Libraries of Scotland and Wales).

If it's not in at least one of those and it was announced by a UK publisher you can be 99.99999% certain it doesn't exist.

It's Tom Rubython - need we say more?

I'm not sure that Hunt v Lauda was even the greatest F1 or Motorsport, let alone Sporting, duel, therefore the hyperbole of the title puts me off slighlty.

Perhaps a bit of a "spoiler" for Ron Howard's forthcoming movie "Rush"?

I went to talk that the author gave about ten or twelve years ago and I think that's where my vague memory of the Trengwainton book comes from.

My family moved to Tintagel in 1965 and as a treat Dad used to take us up to the derelict airfield at Davidstow and let us drive his car! Heady stuff for an 11 year old. I know the Camel Vale MC used to hold sprints there, but I'd never heard of it as a serious race circuit until I saw a poster at a Coys Silverstone meeting. There was pretty much zero interest in motor sport when I was at secondary school in Camelford (the nearest town to Davidstow) so there wasn't any "memory" of motor racing events from the 50's. None that reached me anyway!

I feel the same way.

It would be great if somebody like David Tremayne or Adam Cooper could write a definitive book about the 1976 season.

Eoin Young wrote a pretty good summary..."James Hunt Against All Odds" had lots on it.

Has it got a decent pic of the Ferrari-Jag at the 1950 Italian GP?
