Any thoughts on "Grand Prix Battlegrounds: A Comprehensive Guide to All Formula 1 Circuits Since 1950" ?

A £40 RRP book currently in The Works for £12-99.

(I tried a search and failed).

I'd sayit a nice book to flick through etc., but it wasn't personally enlightening or provided me much in the way of new information.

If Mike's book is anywhere near as good as the talk he gave Bristol Pegasus Motor Club last autumn, it'll be excellent and very funny. Not sure how Mike's wonderful driver impressions (especially Tony Pond) will come across on the printed page, though.

The English version of Forghieri's book is very interesting - plenty of illustrations, and the Forghieri's comments on his time at Ferrari are quite revealing, and explain what was happening behind the scenes. I really enjoyed it.

Wasn't Mr Nye working on one, together with BRM volumes 4, 5 & 6 etc, etc...

Yes, along with a southern California photographer named Dawson, and, I believe, Derek Hill. I have sent several inquiries to the Phil Hill website, all without response. (Who owns that site?) I quit asking DCN a year or so ago for fear of becoming a pest. I contacted Dawson a couple of times and never received a response. There is some speculation of a conflict among the author(s) and the Hill family. The lack of information certainly does nothing to discourage such speculation.

I just read bios of Andre Citroen, then Andre Lefebvre, then Men, Women, and 1000 Kites by Voisin. The latter covered only his aviation work, so his "automotive autobiography" interests me. Has anyone read My Thousand and One Cars by Gabriel Voisin, now available in English? Any opinions?

Thanks,

Frank

My goodness, Mark has been a busy chap, what with this and the forthcoming Zandvoort opus. I look forward to seeing them both.

Some time ago on another thread, Tuboscocca mentioned a book on Sitges that had been advertised, but not published. Today I ran across a book in Catalan on Sitges, apparently published in 1999: Autòdrom Nacional: vida efímera d'una gran obra by Antoni Mirabent i Muntané. Then I found this page, published on Feb 10, 2013, with the interesting statement: "El libro está agotado, pero una nueva versión bilingüe en castellano e inglés está próxima a aparecer y podrá adquirirse en las librerías locales", which Google translates to: "The book is out [of print, presumably], but a new version in Castilian and English bilingual is about to appear and can be purchased at local bookstores.". So is there anyone in Spain or elsewhere who can confirm this? It is not listed at Libro Motor in Barcelona. Is this the book Tuboscocca was referring to?

I have both books.
My 1001 Cars is a well executed book.
like his book on his planes, it is written in Gabriels personal style .... including his strong opinions...his personal live, his affairs with Women.....
However, I have not fully read it yet.

Dear Frank, thanks for finding this...As Mario Laguna is mentioned, we should ask him..

Now to 'my' Sitges expirience...Many years ago there was an article in Motorsport on Sitges..and an advertisement of an' English' gentleman (with a German-sounding name) , who said he owns this site and they will do a big book..I send my cash for two books..all went bust..Contacted him , he now has (had) a racing park in UK (if I'm right), he told me he lost much more than I with my 'shabby' two books..
I would think he NEVER intended to do a book, just collecting money...(hit and run business) .You see I'm still angry.

Conclusion : the book on the website , you sent, seems to be something different..

Excuse my ignorance, but is their a "definitive" book on Sitges? I am there again in just over two weeks and it would be great to have as I plan to roam around.

Thanks

As far as I know, Autòdrom Nacional is the only book on Sitges, so if that is correct, it would be the definitive work. Since you are going there, would you consider stopping in local book stores to see if it is really available, and how someone in the US might order a copy?

helioseism is right: Vida efímera d'una gran obra. Autòdrom Nacional is the only book ever written on Sitges-Terramar, although I wouldn't consider it as the definitive work. Not in the least. Not intending to look down on the author, he is a local historian from Sant Pere de Ribes (the town where the circuit is located) and not an expert on motorsport history.

The printed copy of Autòdrom Nacional has been out-of-print for many years, and it's impossible to find even at local bookstores (not to say Libro Motor, in Barcelona). Nevertheless, someone uploaded the book in Issuu some time ago (click here). It's only written in Catalan though.

BTW, the article linked by helioseism is written by Mario Laguna, author of "La aventura Pegaso" and someone completely trustworthy. I didn't know that the book is planned to be translated into Spanish and English, although some years ago (four, five?) there was a stand in Auto Retro (the antique cars show from Barcelona) gathering signatures for a potential reprint. I don't know whether that people is behind the current project.

Narcís.

Thanks, Narics, for the additional information. From the digital version, it does look like the emphasis is more on the architecture of the nearby towns rather than on the racing. But I guess not very many events were held at Sigtes.

Yes, you're right. The core of the book focuses on the circuit (antecedents, building, racing, etc.), although there's also plenty of non-racing related stuff.

A few years ago Rafa Reyna posted a list of events held at Sitges: here. As you can see, there were quite a few.

Book arrived in time for Fathers Day gift. Halfway through and, thus far, is essentially a collection of memories from a long motor sport career. Early mention of Brailsford and District Motor Club (Derbyshire) caught my eye as my parents were members at a similar time, but they don't recall Mike.

An enjoyable read. However, it does suggest a good subject for a podcast - audio - or, better still, video intercut with some classic rally cars at full pelt.

Friends:

Had the pleasure of visiting Lyon, France, last week and stumbled upon a good automotive bookshop: Miniatures & Librairie Mecanique, 6 rue de l'Anciente Prefecture, 69002, Lyon. www.librairie-mecanique.com, 04.78.92.92.03. They have a good selection of new books, many in English, but very few used titles. Mostly a model shop (with some very good ones, including a 2CV fire engine, which I brought home) but worth a visit if you are nearby.

Also had the audacity and optimism to walk into Shakespeare's in Paris and ask if they had a transportation section. They didn't laugh at me but probably should have.

Are you thinking of "John Fitch: Racing Through Life" by James Grinnell, published in 1993 by Bookmarque?

"Power And Glory Vol. 3" by William Court. Author deceased.

I'm sorry to learn that he's no longer with us. I wasn't sure, and the question has been discussed here in the past with no definite conclusion:

Does anybody know about William Court (the author of 'Power & Glory')?

"Mein Mann Der Rennfahrer" by Elly Rosemeyer. English edition. While it was never published, there is at least one copy, which may be an author's proof, that was owned by Earl Howe and is now in private hands. Also, it is stated in "It Beats Working" by Eoin Young that a German collector bought another copy in a second-hand bookshop in Zurich in 1960. One copy, with the title "My Husband the Motor-Racer", translated by Clarice M. Preston and published by Massie in 1939, is apparently in the German National Library as listed at Worldcat.org.

I hadn't previously seen the information about the copy in the German National Library and that prompted me to check the various British copyright libraries. None of them has one!

However, the publisher's name led me to probable clues as to why this is so rare.

Massie Publishing Ltd was a small firm based at 59 Chancery Lane in London WC2. They were established in 1936 and probably published no more than the ten titles listed on COPAC. Nine of those were translations - of which eight were from German and one from French. There are indications that at least two of those eight were actually printed in Germany: given the German hunger for foreign exchange it probably made economic sense at the time - exports of all sorts were priced artificially low in order to get hold of pounds, dollars, Swiss francs and other hard currency.

Or at least it would have made sense until September 1939.

Massie Publishing Ltd and Photo Record Ltd, a printing company operating from the same address and established at the same time, with the same directors, shareholders and chairman, one Peter John Paine, were both subject to a creditors' voluntary winding-up order in June 1940 and liquidated the following month. It appears that both were front companies actually owned by a Scottish-born German woman called Annie Gallus (née Massie), who left England for Germany just before the war broke out. She later left Germany for Switzerland, where she set up further publishing companies in Zurich.

So, at a rough guess, apart from the copy sent to Earl Howe (and maybe one to the translator?) most of the books - if anything other than proofs were produced - never left Germany and ended up being shredded or pulped. The Gallus/Switzerland connection presumably explains the one found in Zurich ...

Books that never were - These books were probably never published, and likely never will be:
Updated 03-Jul-2013
"Ferrari - Racing in North-America 1948-1988" by Nowak and Finn. Announced by Dalton Watson

I have been informed by more than one source that Joel Finn has had a debilitating stroke and as a result his writing days may be over .

Books in the works? Still some hope that these may appear.
Updated 03-Jul-2013
"Mario's Team" by Gordon Kirby, history of Newman-Haas racing. To have been published in summer 2011, status unknown. Link

It is my understanding, unverified I point out, that the book is on hold pending the outcome of the health problems of Carl Haas.

"Adventure On Wheels - A Race Through Life" by John Fitch

Frank,
You are right, a little confusing as the two books I have are "John Fitch: Racing Through Life" by James Grinnell, and the "Adventure On Wheels" one published in the '50s but it is titled "Adventure On Wheels, The Autobiography of a Road Racing Champion", and not "Adventure ON Wheels - A Race Through Life". Very interesting!
Jeff.

Staggeringly awesome and interesting reviews.

As to Eagles, yes, I had several titles in the pipeline for a British series that never got off the ground. Corvette was to be another one. Of course I told the Eagle story for MBI -- the first book they ever published!

The Ford GT40 book was indeed published by the SAE, a collection of SAE papers. I had a copy.

I'm glad my book on supercharging wasn't listed amongst those expected but delayed. I'm about half-way through it but have had to deal with other projects in the interim. It will be finished!

One that nudged it aside was a long-overdue update of my Corvette book. This will be published by Bentley in two volumes, the first covering the C1 through C3 -- the Mitchell-Duntov Years. It will be out early next year -- lots and lots of new material, pictures, interpretations etc.

Very best to all book people!

As a sort of follow-on to a lot of these projects, what book needs to be written, but has not yet been?

A synthesis of American open-wheel racing pre-WW2 would be top of mine, showing how the championship trail (very short at times) mixed in with the non-championship races and the alternatives like IMCA. Especially how they permeated the popular consciousness. (Michael Ferner, yes, I am looking at you. :p ) Given the volume of statistical works on other American sports it's surprising - may one say suspicious? - that the same level of detail is unavailable for US racing.

Hand in hand with this would be stories about some of the drivers. Gary Doyle has done some sterling work, but it is astonishing that Louie Meyer lived almost into the 21st century and there is no (auto)biography.

I would also like to see a biog of Achille Varzi in English - let's get to the bottom of the story.

And I'd love to see a detailed look on the minor garagistes of the seventies and eighties. We've got something there - Teddy Yip and Osella books - but I can imagine a book with chapters on Ensign, Martini, Trojan, Tecno and so on. Unfortunately I can also imagine the readership might be quite small...at least magazines can go some way to cover those.

Agreed, and I'd like to see something new and more comprehensive on one of my own favourites, Bernd Rosemeyer. As far as I know, all that's out there is the Elli Bein/Chris Nixon book, good in its way, but I'm sure there's more that could be told.

I like the sound of all those - I'd buy all of them!

One book that I've suggested before is potted biographies of one-time GP winners. As there about 20 of them each could have one chapter. And a companion volume could cover the seven constructors.

Find a publisher and you've got yourself a project - but whether you'd have a market is too hard to say.
However Julian's book of the potted histories of the many English motor sport venues may show that is the way forward.
