Prompted by fines' thread detailing errata and addendum to the Popely and Wallen books, and other issues I will cover in the following paragraph, I ask if anyone here is interested in my posting errata and addendum to the Greg Fielden/Peter Golenbock titles "Stock Car Racing Encyclopedia" and it's revision, "NASCAR Encyclopedia".

I did a tremendous amount of research for inclusion in subsequent revisions. However, Mr. Fielden suffered some serious health issues and after being in contact with both he and Mr. Golenbock, it appears there may not be a third edition, which leaves my data somewhat orphaned.

The info is primarily birth and death dates and corrected hometowns and drivers names, but there are a few items in other areas as well.

Does anyone here have either of these books?

Any interest?

My advise, Jim: just do, it will be mostly for your own pleasure anyway!;) At some point you'll find out that nobody reads them anymore, and then you'll stop...

I read your threads Michael, even though I don't have the Wallen books.

It's not so much for my pleasure, but somewhere to post the "orphaned" research.

I brought this up at a busy time for me, but thanks to Bjorn and ensign14 (and hopefully others too) I will begin posting ASAP.

It's a matter of combining my files (since I sent info to different people at different times) and then posting.

Another reason for this is the fact that had I not suffered a protracted illness in 2003, this material would have made it into the NASCAR Encyclopedia. Steve, thanks for reading and for the input. I didn't add that because that info was listed correctly in the Encyclopedia. The spelling of his name, however, was not.

Re: Norm Palmer

The Encyclopedia lists Norm Palmer as "Killed in late 1980s. Drove off cliff, then struck by Mack truck after climbing to safety."

I always wondered a bit about this one. In checking the Social Security Death Index, I noticed Norm Palmer was living in the same city as I am (!). So, I wrote downthe date and went to the local library and checked the microfilm of the local newspaper. There was an article on the incident. According to the California Highway Patrol, a truck driver contacted them after he believed he ran over someone on California State Highway 14 near Mojave. Palmer was driving along a two lane desert road late at night. Coming to a T intersection with Highway 14, for some unknown reason, Palmer's car shot through the intersection and crashed down an embankment (hardly a cliff). Apparently badly injured, investigators figured Palmer crawled to the highway, where he was laying on the roadway. Then the sem-truck came along and ran over him. The truck driver said he thought at first it was a bundle of clothing.

That junction is about 30 miles from me and it isn't well lit even now. I have no idea what it looked like in 1986.

So, a strange incident nevertheless, but not exactly as listed.

One other item, this in the Owners section. In contacting driver Carl Cardey (whose name was misspelled in the first edition and who was left out of the second edition), he told me that he did not drive for owner Bill Clinton.

This many years later, he wasn't sure who he drove for, but knew it definitely wasn't Bill Clinton. I can see where the confusion came from as Cardey drove #45 and Clinton traditionally used #45.

When NASCAR ran at Riverside in the 1960's, the influx of cars from the Pacific Coast Late Model series made for duplicate numbers. In those cases, the car with the faster qualifying speed usually kept the number. PCLM cars also often put a '1' in front, making a three digit number (i.e. Clinton's cars, usually driven by Scotty Cain would be #45 or #145). Later, a 'W' was added behind the numbers of cars from NASCAR's Western series.

That about does it. I concentrated on errata and addendum on the drivers.

It's probably easy to notice that my forte is the drivers from the Western U.S., which works out well in this case, as it was a particularly weak point of the Encyclopedias. And all of this is to take nothing away from the efforts of Fielden and Golenbock. Their work provided the foundation for further research.

I still feel gathering together other U.S. regional racing specialists would provide even more data.

I'm just terribly sorry that illness prevented the pre-2004 data from appearing in the second edition.

I am assuming that we can expect a third edition at some point, but there will probably be a different set of editors.

Thanks for all the hard work! I will add this to my copy.

Thanks Don.

Unfortunately, that will likely mean I will be out of the loop, and with that, the information will fall through the cracks again.

I still have the mindset that I'm disappointed at what I know I have but couldn't turn up. Like details on Eddie Skinner.

Pontiac, Michigan, July 5, 1975. A temporary circuit.

The Encyclopedia has Tope "killed in practice for a street race". I had the Pontiac race, and should have included that in the original post, but for a collating error. Bob, thanks for mentioning this. I've edited my post to include the change to the Encyclopedia's data.

Should the encylopedia be revised for a third edition, I trust they will also take a look at some of the other aspects which have been ignored such as the points schedules and the car owner standings over the years. Of course, the "history" section could use a hard look and a better examination of the whos, hows, whats, whys, wheres, whens, and so forths rather than the current myths being peddled as reality. It took me an extra beat to react when I was asked what France and North Korea had in common? Think about it....

I don’t know what Fielden/Golenbock say about Bill Hammersley who competed in two Grand National races in 1952 (Morristown, New Jersey, July 11th) and 1953 (Langhorne, Pennsylvania, May 3rd). The racing-reference website gives his birth date as 30 May 1908. But nothing is to be found about the question whether he is still alive or not.

Are we about to celebrate one of the rare centenarians of motor racing in a few weeks time? I’m afraid not.

I think the aforementioned driver died many years ago – and his name wasn’t Hammersley.

For the Social Security Death Index knows a certain William Hamersly who was born on 30 May 1908 and died in March 1970 (at the age of 61). I don’t think this is a coincidence. I think Bill Hammersley was in fact Bill Hamersly.

It's been a bit since I checked in here. First, Don thank you for the thanks. Points systems would be a great addition, among other items.

And, this...

The info at Racing Reference was taken directly from the Fielden/Golenbock encyclopedia, so it's the same.

Reinhard, I think you might be correct on your find of Hamersly. While compiling this data, I ran across many others in the Social Security Death Index that I rank as very likely, but had no way to confirm, so I didn't include them.

Correction:

Roger McCluskey was listed in the Encyclopedia as B: August 24 - 1930, and that was correct.

My correction, was incorrect.

I'm still trying to backtrack and find the origination of my error.

Sadly, Kevin Terris has passed away (please click on link to read more about his career from the thread "Gone, but not forgotten...").

http://forums.autosp...175#post3390175

Obituaries list his date of birth as
October 27 - 1943, whereas the NASCAR Encyclopedia (and NASCAR Press Guides of the day) list his birth year as 1944.

And in some odd form of kismet (or something), in picking an issue of Racing WHEELS for researching a request for someone, I noticed it happened to be the one that contained a detailed bio of Eddie Skinner. From that, I can add:

Eddie Skinner (Frank Skinner)
B: August 19 - 1908 / D: March 1987

I also question the hometown of Yerington, Nevada for Skinner as the bio indicates he raced out of Virginia and relocated to Nevada (which I was aware of). However, if the timeline is correct, he might not have resided in Nevada until after his NASCAR driving days were over. His racing days were long from over though, as he raced Late Model Stocks at Tahoe-Carson Speedway through 1985 - when he was 77 years of age!

I stumbled across another one when I wasn't even looking for it.

Woody Brown (Woodrow L. Brown)
B: August 10, 1918 D: May 7, 1972

Woody Brown raced Midgets with the BCRA and then moved into Stock Cars. 3 of his 7 career starts in NASCAR's top series came at what was essentially his home track - Oakland Stadium, with a 4th coming across the bay at Bay Meadows in San Mateo.

I'll have to dig deeper, but I also think Woody Brown's hometown might have been somewhere in Contra Costa County, over the hills from the listed Oakland.

@Jim Thurman:

Don’t you think that Ben Cannaziaro and Vincent Cannizzaro are one and the same?
SSDI has Trenton, New Jersey, as Cannizzaro’s last residence which is the hometown given for Cannaziaro at his one and only NASCAR Strictly Stock race in 1949.
I think Cannaziaro is a mis-spelling of Cannizzaro.

In another place you wrote that Johnny Zeke’s real name was Zukowski.
On SSDI we find John S. Zukowski, b. 16 November 1920, d. 27 September 2008.
Can we assume this is Zeke and the birth date given here (20 November 1920) is wrong?

On SSDI we find John S. Zukowski, b. 16 November 1920, d. 27 September 2008.
Can we assume this is Zeke and the birth date given here (20 November 1920) is wrong?

Reinhard, I'm inclined to say yes, and have suspected that it was a misspelling of Cannizzaro, but cannot say for certain. If he had been from a smaller city than Trenton, it would be easy. The fact there is no one named "Cannaziaro" in either the SSDI or current searches lends even more credibility. Perhaps Ben was supposed to be Vin?

Yes, you beat me to "Johnny Zeke", I was going to post that here today. I checked the SSDI before passing that along to the other forum. You are correct, this (as is so often the case) proves the birthdate to be off, even if only slightly in this case. He was residing in Thousand Oaks, CA, where he moved in the early 70's after racing out of New York (Long Island). He raced Midgets and Modifieds.

Sometimes I’m puzzled that the passing of a racing driver can go largely unnoticed for years if not decades.
That’s the case with Les Snow who died more than 20 years ago! My source for his death date (14 March 1987) is the website of the Peoria Oldtimers Racing Club (needs a little bit of scrolling down).

From that site I also learned that Darrell Dake was indeed born on 11 August 1927 but sadly died in August 2007 (although on the 6rd not the 7th) just days short of his 80th birthday. (Unfortunately in my birthday lists I got him mixed up with another man of the same first name but with a different middle name.)

A comprehensive & affecting appreciation of the right man you can find here - in my view an impressive piece of work!

According to racing-reference.info Ricky Miller from Claremont, New Hampshire, was born on 21 March 1970 and died on 22 October 2004.

Can anyone confirm those dates?

I am not convinced about their correctness because the SSDI has these dates for a certain Oliver Miller from Vermont whose full name seems to have been Oliver W. Miller III.

I'm pretty sure I did find the correct dates of Hop Holmes from Loris, South Carolina:
Hartford P. Holmes, b. 12 January 1943, d. 03 July 1989

Anyone to confirm or deny my suggestions?

A mystery from the 1955 Southern 500 - 7th place is usually listed listed as Lou Spears, but the Daytona Beach Morning Journal dated September 6, 1955 & The Robsonian (Lumberton, North Carolina), also dated September 6, 1955 say that a Jack Maness of Rocky Mount, NC finished 7th. I have been unable to find any record of a Jack Maness competing in any NASCAR race, so who was he? How did the 2 papers get him and Lou Spears mixed up?

I'm still interested, I simply haven't had time to do the sort of research needed. Good job Reinhard

I think you're right about Peck Markota.

Thanks especially for Roy Milligan. Mulligan never seemed right, but I couldn't confirm it.

Eddie Skinner was a AAA Big Car driver in the thirties, and his hometown was mostly listed as Takoma Park, Maryland, sometimes Silver Springs (MD) or Washington (DC) - even Tacoma (WA) in error. Must be the same guy. Not terribly succesful, he is of the type that could be called a "third-heat qualifyer", but he was once third in a main event at Bedford (PA) in 1936, and was 29th in Hankinson Circuit points that same year. For reference, that Bedford race was won by Billy Winn from Ken Fowler, with Walt Ader 4th and Bill Holland 7th.
