I know that this is a fairly unusual group, being as dedicated to the actual illustration artwork as to the cars being shown, but this is the kind of story that I wanted to include in the book that I am working on (we will all be dead by the time it comes out ... so get your money in early ...). I think that everyone believes that these are just guys sitting around at a drawing board, while you really do interact with the racers and the teams out there in the shops and at the tracks, so it gives some great texture to the wonderful Williams illustration to hear some of the background behind it.
Interesting that you mention Alan Jones doing the quick turn maneuver that you described. The previous year, Jone's team picked dry tires to start the USGP at Watkins Glen, only to run into rain at the back of the circuit. He got spun into the catch fencing that was about 5 layers deep right next to the rail where I had set up to shoot. I was shooting up the hill trying to get some group racing shots as they exited the back straight when he got knocked out of line and spun through , taking all of the fencing with him, and knocking over my all-new JPS umbrella that was covering my camera equipment. He thought he might have hit me, as he really jumped out of that car and turned around to check on me. We signaled that everyone was OK, and went on with our days. But, I was blocked with the camera on my right and never would have seen it coming had I actually gotten hit. World Champion the next year with this car.

BAC Lightning T Mk 55 cutaway, the operational version of the twin-engine conversion of British fighter that entered service in the late fifties and this guy did at the beginning of the sixties, both operated aviation English with the Force Aviation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and model exposed in the thread but now modified by Motocar to recreate this two-seater fighter based on the work of artist Mike Badrocke on Lightning F.6

Sad news about the passing of pioneering astronaut Sally Ride.

In 1986 she co-authored a book that contained a cutaway of the space-shuttle cockpit. A snapshot of it can be seen here at Brainpickings.org

Northrop N-102 Cutaway "Fang" multi-role light fighter proposed by the firm to the USAF, . . . seeing this project we can say that in retrospect may have been a game of great value to the USAF and its allies, . . .

While the N-102 proposal was unsuccessful in securing an Air Force contract, many of the lessons learned and features of its design evolved through several iterations to the N-156. This, too, was meant to be a small. low-cost aircraft that could be either a fighter, the N-156F, or a trainer, the N-156T. The key to this was the use of small, high thrust-to-weight ratio turbojets, specifically the newly developed GE J-85. The “T” version went on to win an Air Force trainer competition and became the highly successful T-38. The Northrop N-156F, shown in this cutaway by Endsleigh Castle from the February 1960 issue of RAF Flying Review, lingered for a couple of years until selected to be the fighter supplied under the U.S. Military Assistance Program. It was then designated the F-5A.



It is interesting to note that, in this early stage of the N-156F’s development, Mr. Castle shows several features that did not appear on the final airplane. These are items 47, a variable geometry inlet, item 44, the water spray bars for pre-cooling the compressor air, item 15, the water tank for the spray system, and item 23, a braking parachute. The first three items were probably proposed when, for sales reasons, it was thought necessary to show that the N-156 could achieve Mach 2, just like heavier, more expensive fighters. Mach 2 was achieved more than twenty years later at the end of the N-156/F-5 family line when the twin J-85 engines were replaced by a single GE F404, in what was initially called the F-5G, later to be redesignated as the Northrop F-20 Tigershark. From a similar perspective to Castle’s N-156 illustration, the F-5G / F-20 is shown here in an “Aviagraphica” drawing from the March 1982 issue of Air International. It is interesting to compare the two drawings to see the changes that 20 years of development brought to the F-5 lineage.


It is also interesting to compare the Aviagraphica drawing to Frank Munger’s illustration from the 17 December 1981 issue of Flight International, shown from a nearly identical viewpoint. Please excuse the quality of this “paste job” as the scan was made from a copy that was mechanically pasted together.
