Can anyone give me info on Italian racer Alano Montanari.
I need his birth date and death date and the circumstances of his death.

All I can personally tell you is that I met him at Monza on several occasions, the last being the GP in 1957. He was a real tiger of a rider, must have been into his Forties then and putting up a real hard ride on the 350 Moto-Guzzi in the race.

However, I've mailed Raymond Ainscoe, the author of many books on the Italian racing scene, to ask him of he knows something more. If he does, I'll pass it on.

He was born in Cesenatico where there is a Motorcycle club in his name. Possibly you could contact the towns registrar.

Edit. Even though the source quotes 1909 as his year of birth, it seems unlikely. Suggests that all of his racing years were in his 40s.

He was born in Cesenatico where there is a Motorcycle club in his name. Possibly you could contact the towns registrar.

Alano Montanari
Born 2 December 1908 in Cesena. Debut in 1946 on a modified 500 cc Benelli road bike. 1949 became Italian "first category" rider with 250 cc Guzzi Albatros. Joined Guzzi factory squad in 1954 - won 250 race at Imola's Shell Gold Cup and ran in GPs. Rarely used by Guzzi team thereafter. Also rode for Duacti works team in 1956, coming 4th in Motogiro on 125 model. But following injuries to team members in 1957, Guzzi used him more in 1957 in GPs and he became Italian 350 cc champion in 1957 on Guzzi.


For 1958 he ran as a privateer and won the 350 race in the Imola Gold Cup. He died 17 August 1958. The precise cause of his death was never certain. On 17 July he had been in a road accident - he fell on wet roads to avoid hitting a Red Cross van; the nurses who tended to him apparaently did more harm tahn good. He then fell in a race. He was subsequently taken ill at a meal with friends and was taken to Cesena hospital but they did not want to attend to him as it was the Italian August holiday. His fever got worse and he died. He is buried in Cesena cemetery near to Enrico Lorenzetti and Dario Ambrosini.
