Thanks eldougo, I assume the third person on the Lotus was one of the mechanics - Bob Dance perhaps? update - just realised that 1963 would be too early for Bob Dance. Dick Scammell was Jim Clark's personal mechanic that year so it is probably him.

Yes the seat belt is interesting as are the crash helmets, which look a lot more substantial than the cloth flying helmets that were the norm back then. The two seat W125 was resurrected in 1962 for in-car shots of Hermann Lang lapping the Nurburgring Nordschliefe for a Shell film narrated by Graham Hill . I wonder therefore if the photo is from 1962 rather than 1937?

What a staggering array of interesting photos...

Apart from some of the personalities involved, the technical aspects are more than just interesting. Just how much weight can a trailing arm made of ¾" 16g tube take?

Update - well perhaps more than one after all. The first is in the "riding mechanic" class and comes with its own
caption, though it doesn't say where & when (Kent, Washington, 1966 if you're interested)

What the heck! A couple from 1979:

1) Jochen Mass giving Jacky Ickx a ride on his rather battered Arrows A2 "doodlebug" at the French GP
at Dijon-Prenois. A fact of interest to me (as a Milton Keynes resident) is that the A2 was the last Arrows
built in MK before the team moved to Tom Walkinshaw's HQ.

Finally for today (really) some cracking (if sometimes blurry) shots showing that, despite what Flavio Briatore might say, Nelson Piquet Sr is all heart:

1) Having just won the 1986 German GP at the old, scary Hockenheim, Nelson stopped his FW11 to give a lift to Keke Rosberg
Posted Image

2) At the end of the Mexican GP the same year Stefan Johansson and Rene Arnoux thumbed a lift from Philippe Alliot in his Ligier JS27, which promptly broke down.
While Philippe was baling out of the Ligier, Stefan and Gerhard flagged down Nelson who gave all three of them a ride on the FW11!
Posted Image
There is a video clip of the whole event here

3) The following year at Hockenheim Nelson stopped to help another stranded Frenchman - Stefan Johannson's McLaren team-mate, Alain Prost

First post today - a couple of Le Mans "riding mechanic" shots

1) The Briggs-Cunningham Cadillac "Le Monstre" Spider at Le Mans in 1950.
The young lady in the passenger seat makes it almost a pre-echo of the Mark Donohue pic I posted earlier.
The mechanic in white ogling her might be better occupied fixing the left front headlight!

2) Another Talbot-Lago at the 1950 Le Mans 24 hrs. This time the second placed Meyrat & Mairesse car.

I think the first of Amphicar's Clark/Chapman pictures is also Monza, to judge by the garland Clark is wearing and the fact that Chapman is wearing a tie in England (as one should, of course).

I think you are probably right that the first and third photos are not Brands Hatch - apart from Colin Chapman's missing tie and the sudden appearance of flowers on the garland, the trophy
so evident in #1 and #3 has disappeared in #2 - as has the "third man" - perhaps he did a Pino! Anyway, apologies for giving duff info.

I spoke to soon:

There is an poignant sense of deja vu here - a Brazillian in red overalls and a yellow helmet getting a lift on what looks uncannily like a Williams FW14.
It is actually Christian Fittipaldi getting a lift on Henz-Harald Frentzen's Sauber C13 after the 1974 San Marino Grand Prix.

I'm glad someone's dug this one out - I went looking for it when this current thread started, but the photo had turned into the dreaded red cross. Doug Nye originally posted it in this thread and described it as follows:

The top and bottom photos are taken at Monza in 1963.I refer you to the Doug Nye book,"Lotus,61-71: Design Revolution page 75. There is another ( similar) photograph captioned 'Victory grin. Jimmy takes CC and MS for a lap of honour at Monza after clinching the 1963 World Championship in the Italian GP"
The middle photo is a "trick" one. This is Jimmy driving his 1963 championshp winning car but in 1965 at Brands Hatch. I refer you to the book " Colin Chapman- The Man and His Cars" by Jabby Crombac. On p171 is a photo of JC about to take off from the starting grid with a garlanded CC on top of the engine cowl. About to follow them around on a parade lap are 3 single seaters, a Lotus 7,2 Elans and an Elite. The photo caption reads "An all Lotus celebration display at Brands Hatch to mark the winning of the 1965 F1 World Drivers and Constructors Championship".

So the all-Lotus celebration day at Brands Hatch was the week after the Italian GP ? Surely Jabby Crombac would not be 2 years astray in his motoring history ? The photo in the book is in the chapter that covers the 1965 racing season.

He must surely have got his photos muddled. Even if Team Lotus had wished to celebrate their 1965 championship with a 25 instead of a 33 (which would be pretty bizarre) the only 25 they hadn't already sold was chassis R6, which by then had been modified with (among other things) type 33 rear suspension, which the car in the photo doesn't have.

I also thought it was a bit strange celebrating a 1965 Championship with a 1963 car. Looks like the old quote about not believing everything you read in a newspaper also applies to motor racing books !

As we do seem to wallow in trivia on this site, I will pursue this just a little further. Look behind the mustachioed gent sitting on the jacket, is that half of a face that I see? I am connecting that to the stray boot, if it is an eleventh person I would guess at a female. Even numbers are so ooooo boring.

Eleven plus the driver...

The half a head, I will suggest, is someone with their torso in the left side of the cockpit. There's a third guy on the right side of the car with his hand in the air and nothing else visible, there are seven hats on the left side of the car.
