EA's Shift is back, Shift2- unleashed, due out at end of March (this year, no, really).

After the disaster of GT5, I've gone back to Shift. The game only needed more accurate racing with pitstops and weather.

The website for the new game is slowly releasing info.

Unleashed website

There appears to be night racing.

There appears to be head tracking.

Bathurst is a new track (!).

24hrs of Dubai

New rendering engine. Tyre and track degradation. this likely means pitstops.

Does it include physics? There was nothing wrong with the original game's graphics and audio but the physics/feedback was awful.

No idea. The physics in the first game varied depending on the settings, the full pro mode with all aids off was pretty good.
They are now modeling tyre and track wear, so presumably the physics are being tweaked.

Marcus Nilsson, the executive producer of Shift 2: Unleashed, said this about why they decide to drop the Need for Speed name for Shift 2, "If you think about the Need for Speed games you've played; Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted, Underground, they're very arcadey and action-oriented. Shift is going after a different audience, a sim audience, and it's about driving cars the way they feel in real life. So to not confuse the consumer - don't take me wrong, Shift 2: Unleashed is still a Need for Speed game inside the Need for Speed family, but that family has different legs. Hot Pursuit fits the action games; Shift 2 is sim-like." Nilsson also said that Slightly Mad Studios has worked with the feedback from critics, "AI was a big one; it was too aggressive. Handling on really fast cars was another one, and we've worked very hard on the physics model for Shift 2. We've basically just improved across the board."About the handling model, did he say "Shift 2 is going to be a sim experience probably unlike anything you've ever experienced before."

"AI was a big one; it was too aggressive."

I thought this was true when I started playing Shift, but after watching season of GT1 and the Rolex 24 hrs, the AI behave as aggressively as real drivers.

Reality is, most drivers don't follow the rules of passing and aren't gentlemen.

The issue with AI in shift is that if you run off and get back onto the track in the racing line, they don't avoid you. Frankly, the AI in this game are better than anything so far -they will out-brake you sometimes, and they don't give up a corner that easily.

As for the "sim" aspect-the game trailers to date are all about spectacular crashes. Rumors are that some SimBin guys are working on this game as consultants.

There are in fact a lot of former Simbin employees at Slightly Mad Studios (the developers of Shift 1 and 2). Most original Simbin members, even from the mod team days, split off in 2004 to form Blimey Games (GTR2 and GTL (co-)developers), which turned into SMS after one of the shareholders went bankrupt. Clear lineage, just check the credits ;)

That explains why the sound was so good in Shift1.

(as opposed to the Polyphony collection of various hairdryers and a bongo drum for collisions)

All they need to do to make this game a winner is lose the arcade aspects like the blurred vision in cockpit view and model in pitstops and weather. This is still my favorite game for the Nurburgring.

Update:

Over 121 cars, 50 locations, 100 real and fictional tracks.

http://www.destructo...ed-192818.phtml

"One feature that I think racing fans will really dig is the "Old vs New" mode, where you can pit the cars of yesteryear against modern-day vehicles. Have you ever wondered how a '67 Camaro would do against a 2010 Camaro?"

Frankly, no.

From Eurogamer:

http://www.eurogamer...nds-on_3?page=1

Sounds like it is not head tracking, but view shifting into corners -the game perspective points in the direction you should be looking in corners.

Only if they introduced a B-spec mode where you would watch a 1967 and 2010 Camaro race around.

I take GT5's design out on the developers.
Besides, I don't need a game to tell me a 2010 Camaro will be better than a 1967 Camaro. Who cares. It's like running a NASCAR at the Nurburgring, as much point as running the Oscar Myers Wiener truck at Daytona.

I'm not going to touch this with a bargepole if the handling is anything like the first one. The graphics and everything else were good but seriously just because the cars move sideways in every other NFS franchise doesn't mean they should in this one.
I'll hold out for GRID 2

There are 17 versions, try the "R-type", it has a better stereo.

More tracks released:

Zolder

Enna Pergusa

Miami

Miyatomi

Oschersleben

Now Monza and Brno.

Have they got rid of those stupid aggression points? Setting goals such as “spin out 5 cars in a race”, That's not simulation, that's pure Mario Kart.
It was my main annoyance with the first game, say what you like about how bad GT5 is but at least you aren't actively encouraged to take out the other racers and rewarded when you do.

That was at the very first level of the game. The point was to give points for stupid driving, or precise driving. This was scoring was open to the on-line races, which meant you could avoid the wreckers on-line.

You actually get more points for clean passes and collision avoidance.

Regardless, they claim to fixed the AI aggression issue and got rid of the arcade aspects. We'll see.

:well:
We must have very different versions of the game then because even though I’m at the highest rank for precision, Dirty overtakes, Spin out anopponent, etc one have always been rewarded higher than clean driving.
If you are aiming for 100% completion you have to take other racers out in certain races across all the tiers, They are a quite a few races where you won’t get anywhere near the points target unless you are massively aggressive and that’s before you have the goals which include the likes of “spin out 5 opponents” and so on.

A major flaw of the first game which throws out any pretence of it being anything but an arcade racer like Grid or Dirt

Anyway, good to hear they are getting rid of it

Sure, accurate handling on very, very wide, and very, very smooth tracks.
It's a nice game for hotlapping, as long as you don't count the fake crash or bump physics, or go off track.

The racing is DULL. I'm not going to argue with GT5 fans, it's like arguing with Scientologists.
Regardless, EA now have video out for the Pagani Huayara:

Oh no, another trailer

I consider cars like the Pagani or the Veyron to be fake cars: they don't race, they have no role in racing games. I'm surprised no one has modeled the Plethore:

I managed to get to level 50 and 400 stars without bashing about, but at some point, you're right, the game requires driving like an idiot.

They went after the Grid model because Grid sold a lot of copies. My hope is that Grid2 will be like the Bathurst add-on to Grid. The AI and physics are different than the rest of the game.

I can see from the trailers they got rid of the speed blur effect in cockpit -this was a dumb gimmick. It's hopefully looking like GTR for the console market.

Of course, what all these sports car games lack is true endurance car racing with multiple classes. They did this with the unremarkable Total Immersion racing years back.

It's not bad, but I don't understand the rationale of fake tracks in games like this.

Racing games should have a few cars, many tracks. Not the opposite, a la GT5.

I hope they're saving San Luis for the release announcement.

Who decided that Drifting is cool? It's basically anti-racing.

I don't get drifting. At all. It's the equivalent of doing donuts in a parking lot. Yet, every game tries to incorporate this.

I think the last game featuring Dijon was Toca Race Driver. Not exactly a great game, driving the Gt-one at Dijon was fun though.

Reviews are coming in ... and it's not good news.
Basically, they just lied and made another Shift -same crappy overaggressive AI.

B+ from 1up:

"The A.I. drivers can be unrealistically aggressive, too. A measure of unpredictability in CPU drivers is always welcome in a racing game, but when one of these incorrigible bastards turns heat-seeking missile and puts you into the wall in lap four of a five-lap race, you'll want to toss your controller."

That just saved me $60.

The other reviews are really poorly done -as if they spent no more than 15 minutes in the game.

No mention of tyre wear, track degradation, pit stops etc.

"What it isn't, however – and here's where the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza steal a march on it – is reliable or consistently satisfying in its action. While the addition of an Elite handling model certainly points Shift 2 Unleashed in the right direction there's still an uneasy lightness to the car's behaviour, and even once accustomed to their more sensitive ways they're still prone to providing some nasty shocks. "

Any reviewer that says "light handling" is an arcade player .

"Too often though, tailing drivers will disregard you at a corner, sending you face first into the nearest gravel trap. When you're several laps deep in a key race it's hard to find the funny side and moments like this make you wish for the rewind feature that's been creeping into other racing games. "

Overall, it's very hard to find good racing reviews on gaming sites, but this sounds quite "meh".

AI is not over agressive go watch the numerous replays on youtube and you can clearly see the AI taking evasive action and giving each other and the player space.

some cars handle like turd, others are good even the VVV guy seems to be changing his tune now

as he even says in the video "my review will ofcourse be out next week once weve actually got through the game"

I agree, but this is typical of many game reviews on websites. The reviewers are typically arcade players and talk about the game from that perspective.

I have yet to find a good racing game reviewer. If you know of one, let us know.

I just want to know if this version is really any different from the first, or just some added tracks and cars.

That video link shows the AI behavior is identical between versions 1 and 2.

handling is improved and the physics are better but its not a massive leap , a few of the cars still have the wierd body roll/swerve crap going on and dont want to go straight after a corner but alot of the ones ive tried handle fairly well and are enjoyable to drive.

its certainly not a sim and if you didnt like shift1 you probably wont like shift 2.

the very first car you drive feels horrible and is probably why alot of people are saying the games crap it takes awhile to get to the cars that feel good, a few of the early cars are great like the e30, supra ,subaru etc but a fair few of them arent much fun.

ive only finished about 28% of careeer mode and only have 500-600k so i havent tried out any of the really fast cars or the GT cars yet they probably feel nothing like the cars im using now.

the defauly settings for a wheel are utter crap though and you need to tweak a bit some of the racing sim forums have some good base settings for alot of the more popular wheels which make the game feel alot more responsive.

the physics are definetly a big step forward so im convinced someone will turn the game into almost a proper sim
