I only ask because I met him driving an F40 some years back at Lime Rock... Didn't seem too happy to be there though

The fact that his first GP win went un-noticed as everyone was too busy watching Villeneuve and Arnoux battle for 2nd place.

It had to be frustrating to be in Jabouille's place - just one finish in entire season, and it was a win!!!
And I'm glad no one tried to shorten his name to JPJ - it would be confusing, becaouse of two other Jean-Pierre J.-s...

When he won the European F2 championship in 1976 (?!?), he effectively built his own cars with Rene Arnoux as a team-mate IIRC.

Well, Jabouille was connected with Renault F1 project from the beginning, so had to go into history books - either as first to drive a turbocharged F1 car either as first to drive a car with W9 engine (it was another option Renault considered at the time)!!!

He crashed in the Canadian GP of 1980 and broke both legs. When called in hospital by RenaultSport director Gerard Larousse, the telephoneline was dead before he could tell if Canadian nurses wear any underwear. I was 13 when I read this, still wondering...

Today is his 60th birthday so I dug up this thread to see if we can add something now... or at least persuade Don to change his name in title of the thread!

I first met Jean-Pierre Jabouille in 1993 and he's quite a shy guy. He was really fast in a F1 car in his best days, but too unlucky in race (due to the new renaukt poor reliability). He had a terrific influence on the Renault engine development. A great man.

I didn't see the crash but I sure did hear it. The whole thing happened in turn 3. I was sitting about 100 metres away. Poor guy's car went under the guardrails...

He was involved with Puegeot in the early stages of their F1 effort. Not sure how long he spent with them.

In the early 80's Jabouille studied (together with Giorgio Piola) a concept of safe F1 car that now and then reemerges.
This week's Autosprint has a drawing of it too.
It featured many sensible ideas wich have been incorporated in later FISA rulebooks, including driver head lateral protections and suspension placed ahead of the drivers feet.
One of the most notable features were small wheel rear fairings , to avoid wheel to wheel contact and Gilles Villeneuve style accidents

He announced he was leaving Renault at the end of 80 to find more reliability then crashed in Canada - he made a comeback at the begining of 81 with Ligier but wasnt fit enough and retired.

In 1984 he also raced at least once in touring cars - 24 hours of Spa (now, wouldn't it be nice if it was in a Renault 30...). I didn't check Frank's site so I can't be sure what he drove, but from a race report I read he qualified 14th and during race had an accident with factory Alfa Romeo of Slovenian driver Dagmar Suster. Probably a light one, because Suster, along with two Belgian codrivers, finished 21st overall and third in class, despite small fire on his car, caused by accident. Nothing is said about Jabouille after accident...

Does anyone know what exactly happened in Jabouille's accident in Canada 1980?

I heard he lost control or had a tire going down, or suspension failure
