Race cars that deserve to be modelled

Not 43rd but Crescent made a lovely 250.F back in the late 1950s.

And similarly, Solido, which I think has been re-issued.

I've got one of those. It's a Brumm model with plastic louvres stuck on the bonnet.

Indeed - but these are essentially toys, with solid wheels, solid steering wheels (in the wrong place), moulded-in drivers with cream-coloured overalls, helmets and faces etc.

I'm talking abouit proper 1:43rd scale models evidencing a similar degree of accuracy to all those Bl**dy Ferraris...

Sorry Malcolm, but as far as I know Moss never drove the V12-engined 250F. According to Mr McKinney's book a V12-engined car was only raced twice in 1957, by Menditeguy in the Rheims GP (chassis 2523, #32) and by Behra in the Italian GP (chassis 2531, #6). The V12 cars were tested by all and sundry, at Modena and in practice for many of the races. 'Prova' would indicate a configuration used in testing.

If you look at the number of classic F1 cars released by Spark in a relatively short period, you' have to put money on them modelling the Maseratti sometime in the next 3 years. I've stopped buying sub-standard models on the basis that in the next few years, Spark will release every remaining F1 (and Le Mans, Can Am & Trans Am) cars.

How about the Howmet turbine car?

As the original post mentioned plastic kits specifically, it's worth noting that the Howmet TX was the subject of a 1/25 kit offered by the U.S. firm MPC back around 1969 or so. To the best of my knowledge, it's never been reissued, though a sister kit of the open-cockpit TX Mark II was reissued a few years ago by AMT, packaged as the "MPC Can-Am."

I agree Wildman, I don't think this kit's ever been reissued. It commands big money whenever it's available on eBay.

There are plently of Maserati Birdcage models. Minichamps have done them in both 1:43 and 1:18 in multiple versions/liveries. This is their 1:18 model :

It's odd that to the best of my knowledge neither the Williams FW07 or FW08 have ever been made as 1/18 die-casts.  

The 07 was a pretty iconic car with a lifespan over 4 seasons and the 08 was the last DFV champion.  Both were championship winning cars and both also offer the possibility of producing 6 wheel versions!

Sure both deserve to be modelled?

Spark are just starting to produce a range of classic Indy cars. Try emailing them and proposing the 1978 winner (though I suspect its on their list of probably subjects anyway) :

Isn't that the worst feeling. When you lose or break (as is often the case for me) a critical 'small' part of a model.

I'd be emptying the current contents of the vacuum cleaner to start afresh with vacuuming the area you were tinkering with the model. Followed by forensically checking the contents.

Of course you run the risk of Mrs DCN seeing you with the vacuum and getting the gig permanently!

I'll now go back to trying to fashion a replacement for the 1:10-scale Exoto Ford GT Mark II rear clip closure pin that I lost last night - it pinged off into the middle-distance, so it did...

Have a look at Spark models. They've made morethan 50 variations of the 962 in 1:43 for reasonable money.

Following on from the above discussion, another collector on one of the forums I frequent posted this picture of his 956 / 962 collection.

All models are from Spark, with the exception of one from Ebbro :

Is the difference in length between a 956 and 962 noticeable in 1/43 scale? The difference works out at 2.8mm, or a bit over 1/10".

One might think that one of the model manufacturers would have put out, preferably in 1:43rd scale, the Cooper-Climax number 14 in which Moss won the Argentine GP in Buenos Aires on 19th January 1958, the first Championship GP win for a rear-engine car since the pre-War days of the Silver Arrows and, literally, the start of the modern era.

Spark did show the Jim Hall Lotus 24 (S2141) from Monaco 1963 in the catalogue some time ago. does any one know the status on that item ? I am aware that models seem to take forever to come to be. would like to add it to my Chaparral collection.
