One of the reasons I love looking at models on ebay is because you never know what you'll find. Take for instance the link below for a 1/12th scale Bandai Matra MS11. While I consider myself fairly knowledgable about what F1 cars have been kitted in 1/12th scale this is one I'd never heard of.

http://cgi.ebay.com/...d8#ht_500wt_922

Another example (although not on ebay) is the Imai 1/12th scale Lotus 49 which I bought from a friend of mine who owns a collectible shop. I'd never heard of the model and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the tooling. The box art also features a 1/12th scale Honda F1 which was also a new one to me.

Feel free to share your "Oh my god, I never knew about that" finds.

There are quite a few interesting F1 and Indy cars kits in 1/12 scale made in japan in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I recall the UPC Ferrari 1.5-liter flat-12, the Brabham Indy car, and a few others. The Bandai Matra is a rarity and sold at below what they would normally bring. Great buy!

Bandai also did a 1/12 Lotus 33 and a 60s Ferrari, and I think maybe a Lotus Turbine (or was that MPC/Monogram?)

I believe you're thinking of the "Pregnant Porpoise" turbine Indy car that was made in 1/12th scale. I saw one at a model show a number of years back, but I can't remember if it was from Bandai or Entex. It was half completed but still sold for $250 so that tells you how desirable it is.

Wow, you'd have to take out a loan to buy some of those kits. That's a mammoth price for the Indy turbine!

I'd heard about this kit of Clark's STP Indy Lotus but never seen it on ebay before. It would be a nice addition to my collection but I've bought too many big ticket items lately and don't need to get into a bidding war.

For all you BRM fans out there. A really lovely car. Was this Marlboro's first F1 sponsorship?

http://www.ebay.com/...6#ht_500wt_1165

Anybody know who originally kitted this model? AFAIK Entex never made any original tooling and simply repackaged other companies kits.

It seems that the "Lotus 33" is actually a Lotus 49. Compare these two links:

Looks like the cam covers have been replaced, and that's about it.

Possibly the first Marlboro 'whole car' sponsorship, but this post on the main forum shows an earlier case.

A word of warning: check scales carefully, particualrly anything advertised as 1/43rd. Quite a few of the apparenet bargains on eBay at this scale turn out to be surplus models originally produced for magazine or other promotions, and when set besaide real 1/43rds are clearly not. I don't know what scale they are, or why they were produced to some curious scale (1/40th?) - but if anyone wants a couple of 1959 250Fs, or a 750 Monza just a bit too obviously big to fit in a 1/43rd collection, drop me a line. Yours for what I paid for them which was under a tenner - and now I know why.

I beg to disagree, it is indeed a type 33 with the 1.5-liter 32-valve Coventry-Climax engine. :)
A rare kit but 795 Euros??? that seller is having some happy dreams! :stoned:

Definitely NOT a Lotus 33. Look at the front suspension.

The Lotus T49 did not exist when Bandai first issued this kit in 1966. I had this kit and it definitely was a T33 with the 32-valve Climax engine. However the box cover had a different illustration, so it is possible that the artist may have been a bit confused on this re-edition that might date from 1968-1969.

Well this is embarrassing  -- I actually OWN this kit, albeit as the UPC issue. You are absolutely right, it is a Lotus 33. I was going by the box art on the web site, and I agree that the artist may have used the Lotus 49 box art as a basis for this one. I guess you can't judge a kit by the box art.

Years ago, espescially with tin toys in the fifties, opening the box was often a huge disappointment.

I had the Lotus Cortina as a boy and tried to convert it into the Terry Drury/Terry Sanger V8 Cortina by cutting away the wheel arches and adding big tyres. I failed horribly. Astonishing prices, and do the buyers leave the models unmade? Presumably they do.

When I was selling resin and white metal kits someone told me that it was estimated 75% of kits remained unmade.

Indeed, as RCH says, an awful lot of kits remain untouched and unloved in their boxes/bags. I suspect that, if you made up the Zodiac into a skilfully-crafted model, it might be worth £20 or £30, as opposed to the £100+ that it made remaining in its bag. Sad, isn't it?

Unbuilt kits are generally more desirable than finished models as you can rarely be sure how good the build is. In the case of resin & metal models, an AMR or BBR factory built is a known quantity, as is something built by someone like Stephen, and these models have their own following. It doesn't matter how good a model builder Joe Bloggs is, if his name isn't known then the untouched kit will be worth more to more people.

Crazy Airfix model prices: As we collectors get older, the more disposable income we have to pay for our toys. A lot of of us enjoy finding something from our youth, even if it seems to worth a lot more than the sum of its parts. It is at least a hobby that doesn't leave any lingering negative effects.

A made-up kit of the Zodiac is currently attracting bidders, but nowhere near the £113 which the unmade kit made recently. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2318e93e04

I've always liked the lines on Lola's T220 Can Am challenger but wasn't aware that it had been kitted. The livery on this box art has got me stumped though. I've only seen this car in red, never yellow as shown.

I thought I'd plug my ebay antics here as well, I hope the moderators will allow me to!

I have a number of lots of photo slides from the German Formula 1 GP in 1977 up for auction at the moment. It's hard for me to part with some of this stuff, but I just want to make some space and concentrate on subjects (50s, early 60s and the 80s) that I find a bit more interesting.

I have split into a few lots, there's Niki Lauda, Jody Scheckter, shots of the Tyrrell six-wheeler, Fittipaldi, Brabhams, Lotus:

http://www.ebay.co.u...a-/150790178373
http://www.ebay.co.u...a-/150790186378
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150790182799

I also have stuff on formula super v, inteserie sports cars, group 5 at Hockenheim and Formula One at Long Beach in 1980. Also there is a photoalbum on 60s motorcycle racing at the Nürburgring and world championship motorbikes from the 1970s. They might not be listed for the moment please ask if you're interested!

Also some model cars and a rare kit of the Arrows A2 in scale 1/24 (I just don't get around to building it!!).

I will probably list some more in the coming days that might be of interest to anyone concerned.

Sure do. Try the Pinin Farina Sigma from 1969, because it is quite obvious that the Lindberg design was copied from it.
Maybe the Indy guys should have had a look it it before spewing that ugly new Dallara contraption... :)
