I ask because I am watching a rerun of Monaco FP. And specifically the part when MSC overshoots St Devote and slaps the barrier.

And it seems that within fractions of 1 second, the indicator at the top of the TV display went from black to yellow. It was so immediate I wondered if there was some automatic system based on data from the cars? Or is some dude hovering over a button and has lighting quick reflexes, even during the practice sessions?

Cheers in advance. :)

Perhaps there are numerous officials monitoring sections of the course - each with their own panic button.

AFAIK, the cars are monitored with a GPS system that has a certain limit within the tracks width. If a car crosses the limit the yellow is deployed automaticly and instantly

In that scenario it'd detect a lack of movement on the race track as an incident.

I don't know, but I would guess that, as they have those yellow lights as well as flags, as soon as the light is triggered, it sends a message to race control?

Well we know that everybody (teams and race control) do have access to every car's location around the track. This is updated at something like 10Hz if I recall correctly. It wouldn't be particularly difficult to rig up something to immediately warn race control if there's a car not going the proper speed for its location on track. I doubt that the yellow flag is automatic, though. You'd still need the human brain to figure out exactly why the car is going slowly and if that is in fact creating a dangerous situation.

That's pretty simple then, right? The guy sees something went wrong and waves his flag immediately? Then the race control (who surely has access to all cameras) decides how far to spread the flags.

It should be limited to only the corner where there is an incident.

May be they also press a button? Not that every flag marshal has the power to throw a full track yellow, but the race control can just react to his input do it. And like I said before, race control must have a nice TV wall and will see whatever happened immediately.

I noticed at Silverstone that when the yellow area was cleared and green again, it took ages for the tv graphics to drop the yellow.
