I have around 200 shots of the Easter meeting at Bathurst in 1971.

I'll post in several sets....solos & sidecars.

First, Friday practice....Forrest's Elbow.

Tingate Metisse.... Any relation to Rod Tingate, of later König / Kim Newcombe fame ?

Very much so, Philippe. The bike's still racing today in the hands of Peter Smith, it has a Rickman 8-valve conversion. I'd have though #4 is Rob Hinton, the #12 CB750 was Clive Knight and of course #87 the Corish Vincent pedalled by the legendary Eric Debenham.

Nice shots. Definitely Debenham and Hinton, Glenn, but 12 is John Warrian; 53 is Jack Saunders; 63, Toombsie; 11, Jack Ahearn.

Any thoughts on #2 ? Looks like a CB77 engine, but a front disc like the Metisse..

Yes, almost certainly a complete Rickman front end - no idea who though. The previous year's programme has 2 as Bill McDonald. How's about 10, could it be Max Robert(in)son?

Yes, I think he was out on that bike in the bike demo at Warwick Farm pics that appeared a while back, mate.

Also a bit of Mountain footage on

Ah yes, It'll be Bill then. The pic of Rob Hinton at Bathurst reminds me of witnessing the time he stepped off at the end of Conrod and, not surprisingly, slid for freaking miles and miles ; not sure if squeezed that lever too much or the motor seized. I probably would have bet on the latter. ;)

Front brake I think, Russell. Pretty sure he had trouble getting the front end of the TZ700 back down after the last hump, if so he'd have been doing around 160 mph...

Lovely G50. In some of my first races, I seemed often to get tangled up with Scaysbrook who was then racing a 250 Ossa road bike that was petty quick - in a straight line at least ;)

He's still having the odd gallop too, Russell. Last time I saw him out he was on Bob Minogue's 500 Manx at last year's Southern Classic at Broadford, although these days he's better known as the editor of the very nicely-presented Old Bike Australasia mag. His son Rennie writes for AMCN.

54 and 99 are Victorians Lindsay Urquhardt and Ken Rumble, I think ; 30 is Stan Bayliss with Bob Forstmann 17.

I wasn't there until the Sunday in 1972.

I was going to shoot the Myer Western Rally, being run in the Hill End/Sunny Corner region on the weekend after Bathurst,
so I was doing a trip around the rally route on the Friday & Saturday of Easter to organise my locations.

That meant I missed the bikes.

I think this is Alan Hales. The T500 looks much like Joe Eastmure's bike, one that I later pedaled for a bit. lyntonh, would you by chance have anymore of him?

Blimey Russell, your good self out on a stroker?? :p

Seriously though, how did you find it performance wise against your 'macchi, for example?

I honestly can't remember too much about the thing, other than it was so freaking unreliable.

Wicked set of shots, Lynton ! Wondering if #8 is Laurie Barnett.
#68 on the H1-R is Garry Thomas, and I reckon #29 converted to 28 is Bill Horsman.

It does look like him. In '71 though he came to Europe for a while. Could have been after Easter I suppose. He's out there somewhere but seems reluctant to join us.

Saturday morning now, I presume the first race....
Those in the know can work out the classes etc.

I'll be loading them all down, including some similar looking shots of the same bikes,
but it could help to work out how the races went.

Some of the helmets worn look very ancient for 1971. On the outfits there seems to be alot of old puddin basin lids. But a variety of open face and early full face lids through all of the classes.

Toombsie with Dick Reid on his AIR. 71 is almost certainly a Victorian rider who's name now escapes me.

That downhill left hander looks to have some serious gradient on it, even with the optical illusion of the camera. Can anyone comment please?

Forrest Elbow is the corner and gradients at Mt Panorama, Bathurst can be as steep as 1:6.13
Posted Image

This might show you a different view

Beat me to it Picblanc.

Yes it is going down the hill, it is the last corner before Conrod straight. ( other than the little left kink)

This is looking at the entry to the elbow.

The road coming into it is already running downhill.

Not quite The Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, ...

Having been at both locations I would suggest the gradient is about the same... the entry to the Corkscrew is tighter and therefore much slower than crest before Forrest Elbow but exit speeds would be about the same.
