I count RB/Ferrai/MCL and Mercedes (since they won the CC in some ways back in 09) to the big four, so any other team is up for choice.
Time horizon is irrelevant (so it can be near or distant future)

HRT for sure. With Narain, Tonio and no sponsors, I can see them building a world beater in 2012.

I can't fathom why you would bother to open the thread and respond in this fashion rather than just ignore it....

I dont think any of the teams in the pole will win in the near future. the best chance for anybody is a new team coming in with stacks of cash, a team doing a red bull when the new regs come in.

He probably did that for all the other poll threads, and it didn't exactly work of there being less poll threads, which is ultimately the end game.

Anyway, unless these teams get factory backing it seems unlikely.

Sauber and Williams came close when they had BMW backing.

Renault are obviously closest, but they look directionless at the moment.

I'd echo other comments and say that a new entry or manufacturer tie-in has the best chance of disrupting the status-quo.

I don't really think any outside the top four have much of the chance, but if forced to choose the only one remotely close to it would be Renault.

I don't even think Mercedes will ever have a realistic shot at the WDC.

Williams. i can see them doing very well, and if they can get an even better engine (with all due respect to Cosworth), in 2013 they could be a dark horse.

The top four will change though. Ferrari/McLaren will always be there or thereabouts and others will come and challenge them. For years, Williams was up there. Then Renault. Now Red Bull. Someone else will come

The technical team at Sauber and the resources make them the best bet and also from what we've seen from them so far.

Renault, but if current turmoil and instability continue for another few years, they will lose competency by further losing staff to other teams.

Sauber seems to have solid technical basis and has potential to win, but imo they need manufacture support or strong and committed backer or owner (like Red Bull) to win championship.

Would like it to be Williams but it is impossible to say what will happen to them over the next few years. Similarly with Renault finances could cause them problems.
If not Williams I would like it to be Lotus as they are a team who look like they have a good basis to work up the grid over the next few years. Are they WCC material? Who knows but you can say that about all teams but RBR, McLaren and Ferrari

I totally fail to understand how you can include Merc as one of the big four when they have in fact done bugger all as a team, yet you leave out Renualt who have actually won not that long ago.

Yes, it was Brawn that won it, not Merc. Whereas Renault did it in their own right. When Merc start achieving results in their own right then they can be called part of the big 4. They don't deserve that accolade yet just because of their size as a car company.

A new team is our only hope. Even when a new team has won the world championship, it's usually been after 6+ years and even a decade later. Coincidentally such rises have also been coupled with the rises of young drivers as well.

Brawn weren't a manufacturer team and certainly weren't on anyone's "big n" list at the time. Renault (winners in '06 and '07) seem like a better candidate fourth membership of the "big four". I would count Brawn as the last team outside the "big four" to win.
That said, Renault are no longer a manufacturer team, despite having Proton backing them in the form of Lotus title sponsorship, while Brawn are now a manufacturer team.

Completely agree with this statement. I'm quite curious how long Red Bull will maintain the lead over Ferrari/McLaren.

Sauber are the most likely, but it will have to be a fluke as with that Brawn GP season.

Impossible to predict. It will be the team that can find a filthy rich sponsor with the patience to wait a couple of years if necessary.

Look at Red Bull. They bought the Jaguar team in 2003 iirc. They had to wait more than 4 years for the first win. The big rule changes certainly helped them. But you make your own luck as they say. Hiring Newey (and Willis) when they did was arguable a very smart move in hindsight.

Now apply this to today's teams. Every team could potentially do this too, could pull a Jaguar if you want. Even HRT...

I can't say if Mercedes is one of the big 4. Can't place much credit to them for '09 championship.

As for who would be the next team, it is tough to say. No one thought Red Bull would win a championship when 2008 season ended.

Its about the right mix of money and the right people, HRT has a good set of people along with Willis but they don't have the money, Virgin neither of both, Lotus has not that much money and Gascoyne has shown when he does have a lot of money the results aren't much to shout home about so I don't have much faith in them. STR.. on the ropes no comment. Force India is tricky they HAD some good people but they don't have the money to pay them, they were on the right track in early 2010 though. Williams is a lost wolf in sheep clothing, they need money but they are solid. Sauber has the right people and are on an upward curve, in 2010 they were near the Lotus and I remember Fernandes and Mike shouting how they want to challenge them, now they are fighting with a Red bull on an odd day, if Porsche or anyone wanted to come into F1 I would choose Sauber for partnership anyday.

They may seem a long way from it now, but I voted Lotus. They have the right attitude. Their step-by-step approach appears to be working, they are hiring the right kinds of people and drivers. Hopefully they'll manage a point or two this season with progressive upgrades, and work their way up from there. Throw in more non-Fernandes sponsorship as they go, and a couple more engineering strongminds hired from elsewhere, and they may well turn heads.

True, and Honda were big spenders with ambitions to match, but they never seemed to get the ingredients to mix properly into a competitive team. Mercedes, I suspect, may be more consistently effective than the previous incarnations. So I would say that they are the on the point of replacing Renault in the top four.
