Is displacement or revs the key to sound? Because they sure weren't revving as high back then.


It's a combination of the two. The car in that video was 1.1 litres larger than those of today which offsets the lower revs. The human perception of sound is a very complex science...and not my speciality so I'll excuse myself at this point.

This is from an era with no decibel regulations.

The last V12 engine ever in Formula One.

Perhaps fittingly a Ferrari.

We lost this the same year we lost Senna.

Pretty sure Ferrari were still using V12's in 1995 also? Im actually certain of this infact.

exhaust position/routing and engine position make a difference, i remmber the spyker sounded different to the 430's with the same engine in at le mans in 09

v12 would have 50% more explosions and therefor noise producing moments than a v8 at the same rpm

and you need ear protection for long exposure to proper racing cars, they should give you a couple of foamy plugs with each ticket tbh

I´m amazed seeing just how important this is for some people. People goes nuts, OMG, look how loud the cars are... For me it is insignificant. And I´m amazed that it is percieved as a high part of the experience of travelling to a GP for die hard F1 fans... I´d expect that for someone who knows little about the sport and gets shocked by that kind of stuff, but it´s not the case.

I wouldn´t sacrifice even a 1% of the racing to get better sound, never. Having to use earplugs is quite annoying, a bit of a spoiler if anything. It´s a bit like when you´re trying to sleep and a big motorcycle passes in front of your house screaming like hell... going 70 km/h. :rolleyes: I find much more exciting something going by at any speed with only the aero and tyres noise... have you ever been live to a cycling race and seen a big group passing close by at 70 km/h?? It´s amazing, the wind pushes you back like a truck does, and all you hear is a "bzzzzzz". I´m for silent vehicles, talking about either road or competition.

Volume = volume. How much mass coming out of the exhaust per given amount of time determines how loud it is. You can vary the resonance but not add to the energy going through the system. Lower displacement at the same revs cannot be as loud.

In regards to the. "loud for the sake of it" argument, that is reducing the experience to a simplification that ignores the unique character of the sound and it's context. I'm a rock guitar player, I am quite jaded by loud sound; a vintage Marshall half stack sits quiescent in a hallway within sight me as I write this. Yet I'm not only thrilled to hear the three dimensional sonic effects of a racecar in the wild, I can make a quite precise explanation as to the technical aspects of the sound that makes it compelling in an intellectual way. I'd proffer I once had a discussion along said lines with a rather well known Grammy winning recording engineer on said subject, who likewise felt similarly.

I think of the live, in person f1 car audio experience to hearing a Terminator built by a fine watch company stalking around, looking to kill you. One should know what that sounds like, just in case.

This is an incredible clip and is how we should hear the cars on broadcast today. There's real audio perspective of the car moving toward and away from the camera. The only thing that could make it better would be the removal of TC.

The BMW V10 will always be my favourite though. Just an absolutely awe inspiring sounds that seems to rip right through you.

There is an earlier thread about the best sounding car but not necessarily the loudest.
Could someone out there search YouTube for BRM V16 and post on here again (or dig out the old thread). I cannot access YouTube at work but I can this site. It would seem appropriate to put it out again here somewhere.

The cameras dont do justice to the sound. When they change down and the exhaust goes "bang bang bang", its the most amazing thing.

Yes it's a totally different experience, that sound you describe simply isn't there on TV. I went to Silverstone in 2006 and 2007 and it was just incredible.
