During an interview with radio le mans (moss was doing the classic race warm up) a few minutes ago, Stirling said he was getting too frightened of racing and the speeds involved and has taken the decision to retire from racing, with immediate effect. He will not take part in the classic race.

Three cheers for a truly great driver, and a top gentleman.

Probably the best GP driver ever IMO. A true gent and someone years ahead of his time (Love all the gadgets he has in his house).

He'll be sadly missed, but if he feels it's time to retire and take it easy I say good luck to him. Although I think he'll do a Murray and not really retire.

Legend, to have gotten that far and finally feels he's lost "it". All the best to him!

Thought he anounced his 'retirement' in 1963.A great man anyway-I guess my first hero-won at the first meeting I attended Crystal Palace F2 1953.At 81 is he the oldest active race driver?

Thought he anounced his 'retirement' in 1963.

That's what I thought; beats even Schumacher with his second coming.

That was his retirement from Formula 1 and other top-level motorsport, caused by his serious injuries sustained at Goodwood in 1962. This is his complete retirement from racing, as he has competed in numerous historic events since then (and I think he had a go at the BTCC as well).

Just reading about him and his exploits, made him one of my all time favorites. Stirling is in the top 5 on my list of the greatest F1 drivers, since the beginning of the championship in 1950. I like many throughout the world, wish him all the best.

A driver without equal as an all-rounder winning in every class of racing, in F1, sports cars, saloon cars; he has won international rallies and lawnmower races.

A great driver without doubt, but also a complete arsehole on the occasion I had the misfortune to be in his vicinity.

Let's hope that he keeps away from lift shafts and also commenting on certain F1 drivers.

I saw a man racing at Silverstone in 2006 who was 96 years old. So i'd imagine there are several racing drivers in their 80s and beyond.

lets be honest, he retired in 1963, having a second retirement is a bit self indulgent

In fairness to him its not like some massive announcement with great fanfare. He just got out of the car and the car and said 'that'll do, ive had enough'.

Mind the step...

Disgraceful. Go jump down a lift shaft.

Great driver, definitely one of my favourite!
He could have won 3 championship titles in Formula One (1956, 1958, 1959), but luck wasn t at his side... Anyway, great personality and a true gentleman... :)
Everything best to the future, sir Moss!
