Why is Mclaren so much faster then rbr in race pace, but not in Qualy? Is it because Engine Mapping?

Red Bull pilots have shorter attention spans.
I have no idea.

Button is great in this conditions, plus given McLaren was quite bad in Q3 I'd say they were on different setup (geared towards wet/intermediate conditions)

Because the Red Bull can get their tryres to optimal temperature much faster than Mclaren. However when Mclaren reaches optimal temperatures is is actually looks slight faster than Red Bull..

Wasn't the big thing to whine about yesterday how dumb McLaren were for chasing a wet setup?

Also, Button just seems to be the best in changeable conditions.

In Barcelona Hamilton had like 2 or 3 tenths on Vettel, that isn't so much.

yea but he was faster on a aerodynamic track.

But why not in QualI?!!

Like I said in the earlier post, the Red Bull gets the tyres to optimal temperature much quicker. They will probably dominate qualy most of the year.

They only use their special engine map for their hot-blown exhaust in qualifying I think. That gives them more rear-end downforce than anyone else, which means they can afford to use the DRS more than other cars in qualifying. Hence their qualifying speed.

Another possibility is that they can push the Pirellis harder than anyone else in qualifying, but not in the race.

I read that too. They can't do that in the race all the time because in that case they should take on far more fuel for that, which neutralises any gain.

DRS also helps, I think McLarens DRS basically sucks.

I think it quite clear that the Mclaren is the fastest race car on the track; not by much than the Redbull but its clear. I think it can be said that Vettel is just a better in qualifying than either LH or JB. Over the past few races, the Mclaren has proved to be a Redbull eater.

I'm not sure, but I think it also it generates a lot of heat.

So Vettel will probably get 10 more pole positions, but maybe only 4 or 5 wins. But he'll win the WDC anyway.

I'd like to see DRS banned in quali. I don't think there's really any need for it.

One can't make a sweeping statement like that based on a few laps on a damp track. McLaren were not faster than Red Bull in Monaco until Vettel went on soft's and Button on SS. Today Vettel looked to have the pace on everyone until slicks. Maybe McLaren were working the tyre a little more in the corners and getting more heat into them- a few degrees can make a huge difference in the performance of a car.

You could clearly see how much better the DRS on the RBR was when MS, MW and JB were line astern. MW sailed away from JB.

The McLarens have RB covered on race pace since Spain to be honest, they are not 1.5 seconds a lap faster like JB was today but they are a match or a bit faster.

"Why is Mclaren so much faster then rbr in race pace"

That's what I am replying to- McLaren are NOT much faster than RBR. McLaren might of had the edge in Spain, but then again Vettel's car wasn't working 100%(KERS issues), they weren't faster in Monaco and wet race pace varies from lap to lap.

I think it has something to do with the way they heat their tyres. RB gets the heat in quickly, hence great quali pace, but then the speed tends to drop off as that top layer of rubber wears off. The Mac takes longer to get the heat in but keeps tyres at a more constant temperature, hence slow to get going but much faster in the long run.

Just my theory anyway! :drunk:

I have a theory on all this...

its homologated too...

Fuel tank size... plus the additional fuel consumption of the blown exhaust and DRS / KERS.

Perhaps its simply that Mclaren has a bigger tank capacity?
