Could you believe this guy, how NOT to retrieve debris from the track.

I love how the HRT moves to avoid hitting him and he dives back in front of it, and then Petrov has to hit the brakes on him, hope he had some brown underpants on :rotfl:

I admit that marshall was pretty lame but it is time to start slowing down more for yellow flags. At one time yellow flags meant slow down and now they basically mean don't pass. That Renault was going way to fast for a yellow flag.

In early 2000s they also stopped having static yellow flags, now they are all waved.

It was quite unfortunate - though I'm sure he was outdoing himself with the best of intentions.

Most of these guys, if not all, are great racing fans.

It was indeed quite risky though, and it's a good thing all involved got out of that situation OK.

The marshals should not have been running out like that, they need to be told when there is sufficient clear track; maybe they can't be blamed personally, but the organisation of that whole clear-up was a mess.

Another point obviously is the cars going a little faster than you'd expect. Now, they have a certain time that they cannot breach, but maybe double waved yellows in that area would have been wise. Sure there are yellow flags and SC boards, but they are around the entire circuit, and there is no indication that there are marshals on the track around the next corner.

Mistakes are learnt from though, and I guess people are on to it.

But yes, I found it amusing regardless looking back. It wasn't that close to disaster in the end, but it scared me when it happened. Looked like it was going to be nasty, only looking back again reassured me.

Were there double waved yellows out though?

I'm not sure he or the others should have even been on that track.

Edit: yeah, what plastik said.

One of the funniest moments in F1! That guy must have been drunk, he was just falling all over and wobbling. When he first ran in he didn't even try to make across, just dived right at the middle of the track. :rotfl:

There should be alcohol tests for marshalls from now, one days one of these drunks will get himself killed and bring bad publicity to F1.

It's not funny at all.. wasn't it tom pryce who hit and killed a marshall, and also ended up being decapitated if I remember rightly?

As a marshall, it is extremely worrying to see someone nearly getting run over. I actually had to switch the feed off as I thought he was going to get killed.

Man, I thought I was going to see something far more serious when he fell over the second time - thankfully now I can laugh at the footage but at the time I was yelling 'get off the track!!!'

A couple of close calls with marshalls at Le Mans too - I think they need to be better informed about when it is clear to be on the track, and indeed the drivers should be better informed when they are approaching an area where there may be marshalls around...

I am sure he and his fellow marshalls are laughing themselves silly about it now, and will be for years - but he must have been crapping his pants at the time...

That was one of, if not the most shocking incident I've ever seen in F1, just horrible. A friend showed me a video of it, if anyone hasn't seen it THEN DON'T TRY. It's too disturbing.

I was so relieved the marshal today was okay, it could have been a horrible accident.

Yeah I thought something really bad was going to happen when that Renault came round and locked up.

This really isn't something to joke about.

I wouldn't suggest anyone should see the Tom Pryce/Van Vuuren accident, but if you have you'll know why I get so freaked when I see any marshall on the track

Shouldn't all marshalls have to wear flouescent safety vests, or at least bright colors?
Why in the hell is there a fat guy weaing all black jumping and stumbling around!?

If that is so, than this is an even more serious indictment on the Canadian marshalling organisation.

No, not really.
It was the marshalls fault. They don't need to be ready to stop when there are no double yellows, so...Either they joined the track too early or they forgot to weave dbl yellows

that tom pryce incident. just awful. i will never want to watch that again.

but thankfully the safety car and the yellows slow down the cars so they arent nearly travelling at the same speed.

but still, i feel the cars need to slow down further with yellows

this incident occurred during a SC period, so there were waving yellow flags all around the circuit. thus, concluding from the perspective in the video clip, the only thing warning oncoming drivers that there were four people on the track was a debris/oil flag.

SC period or no SC period, a single waving yellow flag and a debris/oil flag doesn't cut it in such circumstances. there should have been a much more emphatic warning at the flag stand or somewhere else down the track.

Not funny in the slightest. It should be recorded as a near miss incident and investigated properly to ensure it does not happen again. If not for the quick reflexes of the drivers he could have been killed and why on earth wasn't he wearing high visibility clothing? Utter madness in a sport as high on safety as F1. Running around on a wet track is only ever going to end in calamity. It's not the Marshall's fault per se but it should not have happened.

If it wasn't safe to collect the debris even under an SC then it should be an automatic red flag - it just isn't worth the risk and drivers must be made to go slower under these conditions.
