Hello

Does this Facebook group created by some Atlas Nostalgia members still exists? I can't find it now, so this question.

It's still there, Guilherme, but seems to have gone very quiet recently. Perhaps we need to kick it back into life:

I received a request from a Richard Somefinorother to be a friend on facebook---and I agreed. It wasn't until much later I realised it was Vitesse II :eek:

I'm wary of Facebook.

I suppose it's OK as long as you don't put your name, address, date of birth, bank account numbers, Mom's maiden name, social security number, credit card numbers, a picture of yourself, etc out there...

As the culprit that started it, many thanks!

It was done as there are more likely to be "non racing" pictures so we could see who we were insulting/complimenting/thanking/admonishing etc etc

I look forward to putting faces to names!!

Each to his own! I avoided it like the plague, then my son's persauded me to go on it, since then I have been in touch with members of my family I haven't seen in over twenty years, one of which had my father's family photo's. My father died when I was seven (he was thirty three), but now, thanks to Facebook I have seen my dad in a pram, his first day at school, as a young man and when he was in the navy.

facebook is like anything else, use it wisely and it can work for you, it's down to the individual.

Likewise, I started my FB account to keep in touch with my Motor Racing enthusiast buddies and family (who are all over the place!). I have made contact with school chums from Germany (70s & 80s) and been to reunions with them. I have also had a lot to say and do about the Save Donington campaign which peaked at over 15,000 members!! When the chips are down, networking sites can be the answer to the problems. You don`t have to give out all your details and you can refuse people you don`t know asking to be friends. Some of the guys & girls on my friend list are just mad daft about Motorsport and I may never meet them, but we enjoy the banter and if we do meet some time - the ice will already be broken. I have requested to be part of the TNFrs group by the way. :up:

You can even use an assumed name, such as Tazio Nuvolari.

We'll see if the TNF page accepts him as a member.

Must admit I don't have much to do with facebook, everytime I try to use it something seems to have changed and I come away even more confused. I have this theory that it is actually a branch of MI5....

Well, there's where you went wrong, pretending to be yourself.

I only joined under protest after another group I'm a member of started a page there, so hence the alias. It's amazing the number of racing people that are members though. I've "friended" a number of them, most recently Tony Adamowicz. Haven't heard back from Robert Kubica however. He must suspect I'm not actually Tazio Nuvolari.

Like others I fought against Facebook for a long time, believing it was a silly site where silly teenagers went to 'interact'. When I was finally prevailed upon to join I was pleasantly surprised. I've made contact with several old friends I'd completely lost touch with, and number many TNFers among my Facebook friends. There are some excellent motor sporting (and other) photos to be found. I agree that it's generally not a good idea to accept a 'friend' request from someone you've never heard of - I'm now much more wary than when I first joined.

I'm relatively new to FB - and although it may be over simplistic, I think it's reasonably secure so long as the amount of personal detail is kept to the absolute minimum and, that the security settings are "to friends only".
Having said that, I make the following observations...
*Most of the material posted seems to be unbelievably "shallow" - like a ladies' afternoon tea gossip session.
*The number of FB folk who don't give a damn who gets to see their "stuff" is amazing
*I find FB of best value for posting & sharing images
*A regular check of one's security settings is highly recommended.
*NO ONE can have 600 plus "friends" - they are contacts

Also highly recommended is the film "The Social Network" to see the type of (lonely) personality it takes to devise such a phenomenon as FB.

I agree with that list - I have had to disengage from a couple of 'friends' because their posts were banal and embarrasing, sometimes disgusting. Both female, both young... A photographer that was a 'friend' disappeared from FB, and when I managed to contact him he said that his 'friends' were posting stuff that he really did not want to be seen by any of his clients. People do check your profile to assess your personality and lifestyle, I've been told.

I was always very wary of Facebook but was invited to post on the "Save Donington" wall early last year. In registering with Facebook I inadvertantly invited everyone in my e-mail address book to be my friend which initially was rather embarrassing. However once that had shaken itself out and I began to find my way around, I discovered what a useful social networking and marketing tool Facebook can be. Quite apart from the number of ex-racers who I have been able to make contact with (including one F1 World Champion), it has been an invaluable research tool for my project.
Additionally I am now in touch with a group of friends from nearly 40 years ago who now all reside in Australia and whom I would never have found otherwise.
Sensibly managed, Facebook is priceless and is most definately the way that we will all go in the future, so it's best to get with it sooner rather than later.

I've been a member of that group for some time but it seems I come here much more often than I visit FB - I guess I haven't really found out yet how to make use of it.

This is pretty funny DC you should have a warning on this post to put down that cup of Java or mug of beer before reading the comment.

FB is great but don't answer any surveys or open any boxes sent by so-called friends. These FB apps then send the garbage to all your friends.

The Can-Am history page has a great collection of photos many I had never seen before. Too bad they don't give the period photographers credit.

I do find it amusing when I log onto Facebook in the morning and open my chat to often find several ex-F1 drivers online! I have a similar experience with Skype!

I've just noticed that as part of the Facebook revamp our 'TNFers on Facebook' group is scheduled to be archived and (if I've read the explanatory blurb correctly) there is currently no option to keep it going, as there has not been enough recent input to it. Does anyone (especially the group's admins) think it's worth trying to preserve or recreate?
