Hi, I'm OfficeLinebacker, and I approve of this thread.

Hi, I'm Bernie Ecclestone and I strongly disapprove of this thread.

Seems there's many other more interesting worlds out there.

Yes, that is 70; I was mistaken; the photo of Siffert with no 20 above must be 71, because behind him there is a Ferrari 512 M.

The picture isn't spectacular in the same way the previous were, but it does convey the beauty of the old Zeltweg and the sense of speed – it is a very nice photo.
This was the occasion of the first win of the Porsche 917, I think. The Mirage behind the Porsche is one of my favourite looking prototypes, even if it wasn't very competitive.

Always liked this photo: the Porsche Carrera 6 diving into one of the 'Ring corners (before Breidsheid, I think)

Ah, the Hella Bridge at Cassidy/Brookes in NZ  Pretty much all of my Rally NZs involved a visit to that stage. I was probably there when it was taken.

Someone asked for the context of pictures. As this one is somewhat obscure, this is the information needed to fully appreciate the photo.

This is the 1000 Km Nurburgring 1970. Siffert was having a great deal of trouble with his rivalry with Rodriguez. He was beaten (partly because of mechanical faults) by Rodriguez three times that year. Yet he had won the Targa Florio and Spa.

In this race he got pole (2nd: Rodriguez). But he was beaten to the lead by Rodriguez and then overtaken by Giunti, driving the slower Ferrari. He could not retake second place for the whole of the first lap, and Rodriguez gained 11 seconds. This picture shows Siffert's frustration for being held by the Ferrari. Siffert then overtook Giunti, closed on Rodriguez, passed him and gained about 10 seconds lead. Neither Siffert nor Rodriguez finished the race, which was won by Elford and Ahrens in another Porsche 908/3.

The photo is significant of a great era of racing. It is also magnificent as a photo.

this is the legendary Porsche 917 (1969-1971) -- fastest race car ever produced, also driven by Helmut Marko, Red Bull F1 consultant -- he won Le Mans 1971, and held the speed/distance record for 40 years ... 3,107.7 miles at an average speed of 137.6 mph.
5 litre 12 cylinder twin-turbo
1,580 bhp
full boost, 39 psi
1,800 lb (820 kg)
917/30 (slightly different than the one in picture) 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 mph (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds
top speed > 260 mph (420 km/h)
it won Le Mans and dominated CanAm until it was disqualified by FIA for fuel consumption... several drivers died in this as it had almost uncontrollable power and speed.

A ****ing epic beast, also probably my favourite race car of all times. I like more the Langheck (longtail) version of the 917 though:

Also watch Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" - both of these 917's in action in the 1970 Le Mans race. Look how the Langheck eats the normal one down the Mulsanne straight at an incredible speed...

I don't know where you're getting your information, but that's all a bit inaccurate. The 917 was certainly not the "fastest race car ever", not even close. It was the fastest sports car of its time, and possibly would have been as quick as an F1 car of the era due to aerodynamic advantages, at least on a fast circuit like Spa or Le Mans. By the time the 936 rolled around a few years later, cars were once again faster than the 917, and they continued to get faster and faster because of aerodynamics and tires, culminating with the fastest of the Group C cars like the Sauber C9 and Peugeot 905, and again recently with the fastest of the diesel prototypes like the 908 HDi. These cars would have lapped 20 or 30 seconds a lap faster than the 917 and gone far further in 24 hours, if not for the huge circuit changes at Le Mans that added many chicanes and tightened many corners. Despite these changes, that distance record was reset in 2010 anyway by the diesel beasts, and the Sauber was hitting 248mph on the Mulsanne, at least 15 mph faster than the best of the 917LHs 18 years before.

As for your numbers, the 917 that raced at Le Mans was certainly not a turbo. It was either a 4.5L or 5L flat 12, normally aspirated in Le Mans/World Sportscar form. That motor produced a maximum of around 600HP in 1971, more like 550 for the earlier cars. The top speed for the short tail cars was around 210 mph, the LH cars in '71 reached 230 mph in qualifying, certainly not 260mph. The 917/30 Can Am spyder was indeed a twin turbo, and it produced a maximum output in excess of 1,300HP, but it never raced at Le Mans, and its blunt aerodynamics meant that its top speed was around 221 mph, which it reached at Talladega speedway in 1974 when Penske took Mark Donohue there to set a closed course speed record with the retired Can Am car trimmed out for speed. The FIA had nothing to do with the 917 being retired from racing, it had everything to do with rules being changed for Le Mans to slow the cars and with the Can Am series declining in attendance and teams because of total dominance by Penske with the 917/30. Also, to my knowledge only one driver died in the 917, John Woolfe in 1969 on the first lap of the LM race. He was inexperienced in the car and that '69 machine was very unstable because of poor aerodynamics, and his seatbelts weren't fully fastened, so there were many factors leading to his death other than the cars having "uncontrollable power and speed". If that killed drivers, the F1 cars of 2002-2005 would have produced numerous fatalities!
Don't get me wrong, the 917s and 512s were amazing cars, and having seen both race in person at historic events, including the 917/30, I can appreciate their beauty and sound. Back to the pictures!
Ferrari 312PB at the Targa Florio 1972. Insane that such a fast car would be racing on such a street with so little thought for safety...

Thanks for more detailed info... I was just trying to give some idea how great 917 was... I assume your info is more accurate, I did not dive into the details. I quickly grabbed the specs from Porsche, but yes, they had many versions of 917 over it's life. I stand corrected.

from the picture background and the car, I know that this photo was taken at the Avus (Berlin) in Germany.
A street track that made use of the city motorway (Stadtautobahn), and had mainly two very long straights, with loads
of slip streaming battles.

Posted Image

Seeing the damage at the front rim (wheel), I would say, it was at the section at the end of the back straight (2).
At some point they used a very special kind of kerbing there. The kerbs where completely round, so you could not really
"ride up onto them", like you do with "normal kerbs". It did not matter at which angle you hit the kerb, it was always "bad".
Some other cars, broke dampers, top mounts and other suspension parts that year, and the engineers would just tell the drivers
"don´t even think about touching the kerbs" for the rest of the weekend.
If I remember correct (but maybe I don´t because it´s ~17 years ago), they changed the kerbs the following year.

ssme place with DTM cars - same kind of problem:

Mate that lamp post is near 1/4 of a mile behind him (Long lense shot).... Trust me, having watched these pilots at close hand, they do not take stupid risks.

And since it's the 59 car, that photo has to have been taken some time during practice, 59 crashed out after only 2 laps in the race.
