Hi, I'm OfficeLinebacker, and I approve of this thread.
Hi, I'm Bernie Ecclestone and I strongly disapprove of this thread.
Seems there's many other more interesting worlds out there.

Someone asked for the context of pictures. As this one is somewhat obscure, this is the information needed to fully appreciate the photo.
This is the 1000 Km Nurburgring 1970. Siffert was having a great deal of trouble with his rivalry with Rodriguez. He was beaten (partly because of mechanical faults) by Rodriguez three times that year. Yet he had won the Targa Florio and Spa.
In this race he got pole (2nd: Rodriguez). But he was beaten to the lead by Rodriguez and then overtaken by Giunti, driving the slower Ferrari. He could not retake second place for the whole of the first lap, and Rodriguez gained 11 seconds. This picture shows Siffert's frustration for being held by the Ferrari. Siffert then overtook Giunti, closed on Rodriguez, passed him and gained about 10 seconds lead. Neither Siffert nor Rodriguez finished the race, which was won by Elford and Ahrens in another Porsche 908/3.
The photo is significant of a great era of racing. It is also magnificent as a photo.

You can sense the speed:

this is the legendary Porsche 917 (1969-1971) -- fastest race car ever produced, also driven by Helmut Marko, Red Bull F1 consultant -- he won Le Mans 1971, and held the speed/distance record for 40 years ... 3,107.7 miles at an average speed of 137.6 mph.
5 litre 12 cylinder twin-turbo
1,580 bhp
full boost, 39 psi
1,800 lb (820 kg)
917/30 (slightly different than the one in picture) 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 mph (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds
top speed > 260 mph (420 km/h)
it won Le Mans and dominated CanAm until it was disqualified by FIA for fuel consumption... several drivers died in this as it had almost uncontrollable power and speed.

A ****ing epic beast, also probably my favourite race car of all times. I like more the Langheck (longtail) version of the 917 though:

Thanks for more detailed info... I was just trying to give some idea how great 917 was... I assume your info is more accurate, I did not dive into the details. I quickly grabbed the specs from Porsche, but yes, they had many versions of 917 over it's life. I stand corrected....Don't get me wrong, the 917s and 512s were amazing cars, and having seen both race in person at historic events, including the 917/30, I can appreciate their beauty and sound. Back to the pictures! ..

Isn't this Walter Rorhl @ Rally Portugal WRC? Can't decide who is crazier -- the driver or the spectators?

from the picture background and the car, I know that this photo was taken at the Avus (Berlin) in Germany.
A street track that made use of the city motorway (Stadtautobahn), and had mainly two very long straights, with loads
of slip streaming battles.
Seeing the damage at the front rim (wheel), I would say, it was at the section at the end of the back straight (2).
At some point they used a very special kind of kerbing there. The kerbs where completely round, so you could not really
"ride up onto them", like you do with "normal kerbs". It did not matter at which angle you hit the kerb, it was always "bad".
Some other cars, broke dampers, top mounts and other suspension parts that year, and the engineers would just tell the drivers
"don´t even think about touching the kerbs" for the rest of the weekend.
If I remember correct (but maybe I don´t because it´s ~17 years ago), they changed the kerbs the following year.
ssme place with DTM cars - same kind of problem:

That chopper pilot is stupid beyond words. Rotor. Lampost. Tree. Floor. Explosion. Burning. Death.

OK. What makes it for me is the apparent desertion; like there was not another soul to be found.Spa-Francorchamps 2011 24hr race, not a good race for the McLaren GT3´s
