just asking whats was the nicest sounding racing machines you have heard.

for me the rawest sounding bikes i have ever heard would have be the 125 twin two strokes and the smoothest would be the rotary nortons.

but one that always stands out for me [not nostalgic yet i know] was the kenny roberts pre bigbang proton 500, a lovely sound which was both powerful and aggresive.

any unsilenced two stroke speaks for itself, when at the old tracks you could get close to them and listen to the note especially if mixed in with a four stroke [trying to keep up of course!]

thinking about it i have to add the reverse cylinder 250 yamahas which sounded excellent, really aggressive and deep.

the rotax tandem twin sounded nice too.

The 1976 350 MV4 was one of the best, but it's the Honda six for me.

What about the sound of the Triumph and BSA triples in unison during the early Transatlantic series?

Stood at the Esses on lap 1 when a dozen of 'em came down Stebbe Straight in close formation - I nearly had a 'movement' :drunk:

The V4 250 Yam sounded lovely the other week at Mallory too.

I've still got some Stanley Schofield LPs (or as my kids called them, big CDs) somewhere.

Got to be the 250 Honda six, followed by the 500 Gilera fours. I saw the Honda's in the IOM and the Gilera's at brands with Minter and Hartle on board.Great sounds.

There are only 3 bikes in my life I can remeber hearing and thinking they had that something that'd make me espcially remember them.
The NR500 from 1980 - what a noise that thing made, you could hear it from the Old Hairpin at Coppice.
The last 1000cc MotoGP kwak - it sounded like all hell was going on in there - markedly different to its peers
Ray Porter's Fireblade in 2005 - going up the hill to Deer's Leap at Dundrod it sounded like it was going to explode, or just rip the air in half

Sorry, too young to have heard a Honda 6 racing, but they do sound good...

What??? ......terrible bloody things.
Made me deaf as a post and I've got a tinitus orchestra going on in my head full time these days.
Be careful what you wish for and even more careful what you listen to ;)
I reckon one of the only good things about the change to diesels for GPs is that the fellas in the pit garages aren't going to be going deaf quite as quickly now that they don't have all the high frequency racket.
Reading your post, a picture sprung into mind of late one night working on Weiner's bikes.
1am, all quiet and not far off finished when some Spanish plonker starts his 125 outside the door and revs the piss out of it, as was the habit with the 125 guys.
After 10 minutes of this Howie was out there with a pair of sidecutters and the bloke only just got it shut it down in time to stop the throttle cable getting cut.
Racing 2 strokes, terrible bloody racket and the 125's the worst of them.
But the Honda 6..... now that's another story, that really was a nice noise.

I'm kinda keen on the MV 500 4 which I followed for 26 odd laps a t Salzburg way back when. Ears rung for days, but...all time great was the Honda 6 staring up in the Paddock in Assen circa 1980 and being knocked over in the rush to stand behind it running and say " oh my god ". The RG 500 pre silencers were bloody special as well :)

That must have been when Hailwood did his demo, i was lucky enough to see him and Ago do their demo around Silverstone in 1979, the racket echoing around the grandstands was tremendous.

any emc at the tt, remember the 7up dr joe bike brian reid had there in 88, sounded like the final coming when that came through the trees, the induction was incredible.

speaking of induction noise, some of the 500s and 250s really howlled when coming towards you, the 500s especially towards the end of the 80s early 90s the induction was as good as note you got from behind it.

i remember seeing [and hearing] footage from the top of the hill at sazburgring in 1990 when rainey and schwantz passed together from a trackside camera, probably around 165 mph plus and the noise was incredible, its hard to put into words :smoking:

one of the best sounds i ever heard , was from the footbridge on the Mistrale straight at Paul Ricard at the 1990 B'ol D'0r.. a support race for RC30's run at night, full grid, you coulndt hear them coming, or see them , but when they went under you, it was a moment to remember... 1st lap was like nothing else.

Ilmor GP bike in the workshop was quite nice too.

Hi mate! The MV, MVs were something else. Deeper than the Honda 4 stroke and, well for me amazing. I loved The Trident from Tokorora as well and would have loved to listen to them on full noise in the IOM. Kriedler with the 14 speed gearbox on the old vinyl records from the 60's were pretty impressive for a school boy from NZ.
