Here are some of the cars practising in the wet for the Tasman race in 1972 at the Farm.

As usual, Lynton, nice stuff...

Hailwood doesn't look all that comfortable in the first pic, does he?

Yes I agree with Ray great stuff. Gary Campbell has the rear sway bar disconnected. This is clearly visible in the second shot. This is not helping the understeer.

Standard practice in wet conditions. At least he can feel what is happening and in a F5000 understeer is more controllable than oversteer. Great shots!

Yes I understand it is standard wet weather practise, but you would probably disconnect the front as well. The car is not a F5000. It is an Elfin 600.

Maybe he did that next? There is standing water and we can only see a small part of the track. What I note is very little spray up from the wheels which means very low speed or not very wet track. My guess this was some exploratory laps. Remember how much spray was coming up from Rindt's Lotus in that great wet weather driving at the Farm. No evidence of that here. Yes Elfin 600 not F5000, my comment was more general about normal wet weather set up.

This was the first time i ever seen a Yellow Visor used only in the wet ,it thought it was cool when i seen Mike with it in the pits that day.
Then KB turned up with one at the next race and Max soon after that.

Frank Gardner used yellow goggle lenses, I'm sure in all weathers, for years...

Good point there, eldouglas.

Its like putting a yellow filter on your camera shooting b/w film, especially in overcast conditions as it does give the contrast a bump in a lot of different conditions (enhance the clarity for the driver, especially when there is a lot of foliage around).
The yellow doesn't cut down the amount of light much either so is quite a good choice for a visor (a red filter for example, is much more contrasty but you have to increase your exposure some 2-3 stops to compensate so is quite "dense" by comparison)

I know it is a long time ago, and I wasn’t around the scene at the time, but was 1972 the peak year for F5000s in the Tasman Series?

Did it really mean much for the likes of Mike Hailwood and David Hobbs to be here? Were they hoping to offload their Surtees TS11 and McLaren M18 respectively to a local competitor?

I know that the later was a bit of a turkey, but Hailwood performed well in this Tasman – how come no Surtees were ever sold into Australia? Was it because of the Lola T300?

I think #12 would be Ray Hanger in the Rennmax and #14 is possibly Colin Hyams in the Matich SR4B. The nose on it looks a bit odd though.

There's three there I can pick (without chasing details in magazines or programmes)...

7. John Leffler (Bowin P4)
3. Bob Beasley (Bowin P4)
11. Richard Carter (Hustler)

And, of course, 31 was previously identified as Doug Heasman.

But hang on there a moment... is 30 Enno? Or is 30 someone else? Is there two No 30s (note different helmets etc)?

My "zooming" on the original scan shows 30 is certainly E Buesselmann.

Is it possible there's a pic here that's a ring-in from another meeting?

No ring-in photo....my negs are kept in wax sheets labelled with meeting details, dates & page numbers....& the sequence follows OK.

He's wearing a bubble visor in the bridge shot in practice, when it was patchy weather, & quite poor light.

On the Sunday, he's reverted to goggles.

Thanks for the captions again, Michael, they help with the names for a number of the lesser known cars & drivers.

And if anyone's interested...

Beasley got past Leffler to win, David Mingay passed Dick Carter to follow Enno home.

As for that last Wren, I really don't think that's Bill Reynolds (by this time about 70 years old) driving. More likely Larner himself. Larner isn't mentioned in the report on this race, nor is Reynolds, but is certainly mentioned the following week in the Sandown report, Rd 2 of the series.

Nice photo Rod!
# 23, Patrick Hogan, Lotus Elan Ford.
In the background is # 30, Ecurie Triumph, Barry Campbell Triumph TR3a.

It looks like a Sprite behind the Elan so that might be # 7, Michael Raffan, Sprite Holden but that is just a guess.

Ray Lintott had Elan number 18. ;)

And yes, that's Mike Raffan behind him. He was mentioned a week or three back IIRC. No idea who's running in behind him, however.

Paul...I was there and it was a huge huge meeting....biggest? don't know..

I think it did mean a lot to some of these drivers....why else would they travel half way around the world when it was no where near as easy as it is today...

I was fascinated by the efforts of Mike the Bike.... the car was at all sorts of angles with Mike trying to control it ...

Maybe the Surtees just weren't for sale being from a relativly specialised team?

It would have been for sale...

Surtees were in the business of manufacturing racing cars, customers were good things to them. But I would suggest that the Frank Gardner influence would have meant a lot here, so Lola were better represented in an area where there would have been very few buyers each year.

Sorry, Paul, I missed your post previously. You would be close, though I'd have to think about it... the Tasman Cup came to an end in '75, so the series was held six times for F5000 cars. In the first, the series was won by a 2.5-litre car, '71 was the year of the M10B, very little else had a look in.

But I would think '73 would have been more diverse. Just which one was the 'peak' is very hard to say without taking some time to properly analyse things.

I was at Warwick Farm that weekend and vividly recall Hailwood full blast through the esses, taking two or three grabs at each corner, no smooth arc from Mike the Bike!

The Tasman Series lost its mojo when Warwick Farm was lost from the series (after the '73 round) and Matich retired (post Tasman in early '74).

From '70 - '73 the series was really all about the grudge match between Matich and McRae.

And how about the way he was the only one to go down through each while braking for Creek?

Sounded fantastic!

I have to agree that the series dulled down a bit with the loss of the Farm. It was never the same at Oran Park, but we got used to it.

Of course, that '73 Farm race saw the raw conclusion of the McRae/Matich grudge matches when Frank went around the outside of McRae into Paddock during the race and left him to sort out his visibility in his roostertail.
