This week's Autosport claims to be a celebration of F1's "greatest season" 1986.

I can't agree.

Yes, a memorable title battle and finale.

But, Elio de Angelis died that year.

No F1 season with a fatality can be branded great or greatest.

Sorry.

I was using the fact Autosport had such a feature to open a discussion about whether a season with a death can be considered great.

I disagree with you. Since the 1950 Formula 1 season you can look at the statistics and see that deaths and F1 had been a pretty much a "regular" occurrence. As unfortunate as it was, it was pretty much guaranteed that somebody would lose their life racing in F1. 1986 marked 4 years since the last death which at that time was the longest stint where a driver hadn't been killed. It was like being a firefighter and a soldier, you had your will made out before you started racing.

I also cannot agree with this rationale. It was tragic and deplorable, but that is entirely separate to the quality of the season and the tension of the finale. It was a great season, but I am not sure I would have it as the best ever (but not for the reasons you give).

four way title battle decided at the last race (ok it was three by then but you know what i mean)
inter team battle
spectacular cars (most horsepower ever in f1)
great racing.

ok for this reason you rule out: 52 53 54 55 57 58 59 60 61 62 64 66 67 68 69 70 71 73 74 75 77 78 80 82 86 94 and arguably 00 and 01. hell if i looked I could probably find fatalities at f1 race tracks in every other season. Motor racing is dangerous the people that go and the people that compete are aware of this, thankfully it is a lot lot safer than before. 1986 was epic I was 13 I remember staying upo to silly am to watch mansells tyre blow. Elio's loss was indeed tragic and sadly unnecessary however it does not anul what was a brilliant season in f1.

By all accounts it does indeed appear to have been a fantastic season. Pity the official review video wasn't so good.... Anyway wasn't Autosport among those declaring 2010 the best season ever?

Oh and yeah. An RC thread really.
