In the mid Nineties when ITV had the rights to F1 they can a trail for the Monaco Grand Prix (I think) and it featured many crashes, a big selling point for this race apparently. Anyway one featured was a silver car (probably a McLaren) and one/both wheels are unnattached and the commentry says something along the lines "You can turn the steering wheel but there's nothing will happen" or words to that affect. The crashes featured may not have been at the Monaco grand prix.

'fraid not. I could talk for hours about Monaco '76 though. There was a silver(ish) car involved, though I can't remember if it finished. Nostalgia, eh?

IIRC ITV took over Effwon coverage mid to late nineties possibly '97.
Sounds to me like the Raikoennen incident at the Nuerburgring when his wheel fell off while leading in 2005ish.

It would have been quite remarkable if they showed that already in the mid nineties.Sounds to me like the Raikoennen incident at the Nuerburgring when his wheel fell off while leading in 2005ish.
McLarens are only silver since 1997 BTW.

As equally remarkable as showing Effwon on ITV in the mid 90's

It wasn't Wurz in 1998. I know the car is turquoise, but it's worth putting out there.
The commentary sounds like it was definitely from this incident. Wurz crashed in the tunnel, lost both wheels and careered, out of control, all the way down the waterfront into the barrier at the Nouvelle Chicane. The live coverage cut to Wurz's onboard camera after he had lost his front wheels and showed him trying to steer the car regardless of the damage. I remember Martin Brundle picking up on this fact and making a comment similar to the one that the OP mentioned.
Video (from the official season VHS review)
The memory of the silver car could perhaps be explained by ITV playing this snippet of commentary over a McLaren crashing in a similar way, and David Coulthard did indeed spin in the braking zone of the chicane in the early stages of the 1997 race. The resultant congestion caused by the circuit being partially blocked also claimed his team-mate's car.

I've eaten the same mushrooms as fred54 and think he means this one from 1993.....
