Hi there

One of the (many) queries I am trying to resolve at present concerns the sports car race at the 1962 Oulton Park Gold Cup.

A while back I spoke to Bob Hicks about his racing results and asked him whose car he drove at the above event.

Unfortunately, he could not remember and, indeed, did not ever remember driving the type of car that I suggested he had.

For fear of prejudicing the outcome or artificially jogging anyone's memories, I won't say what that car was for now!

I was just wondering if any TNFers had a copy of the programme entry list they would be prepared to post here or scan and email to me?

Just to say that I have checked the Autosport report and it does mention the car he drove, so I don't think there is any doubt here but a programme entry (perhaps with annotations!) might dispel any lingering doubts I have. There is no description of the sports car race in Motor Sport, just the result.

I am also trying to find out who owned the car, so any details on entrant. For the Guards Trophy in August at Brands, he entered under his own name, as N.R. Hicks.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael I have a copy of the programme. I don't have a scanner but I could photograph it and send. Give me a little while and I will find it.

Hi Pete

That's great, many thanks, exactly what I was looking for.

I just have no idea whose car this might have been, since Bob does not appear on any of the sales records and there is no obvious candidate either! Added to which, he raced a 1475 engine in the Guards Trophy, suggesting that he either changed the engine or that he was racing another car (most likely explanation, Chris Williams's, as I have read that he got a race appearance in that car as a 'thank you' for building it up).

Sometimes programmes give the colour of the car which is a help but this one doesn't, unfortunately. However, it does give the engine size, which is some assistance!

Thanks again for responding so quickly.

Michael

As Michael points out, Motor Sport only reported the top three. Does anyone have the full result for this race?

Regards,

I have had a look through some Autosports from 1962 to see if they offer up any explanation but no luck on that front. I don't have every copy from that year but what I do have only shows Bob Hicks competing in a Lotus 23 at the Brands Guards Trophy and Oulton Gold Cup meetings. There is no accompanying information telling us anything about whose car this was.

Just as a point of interest I came across a C.J.Hicks racing a Lotus X1 and a Ford Anglia during 1962 - no relation I suppose?

My apologies for being flippant, but I do like the sound of Ecurie Wild Goose as an entrant!

I suspect they may have enjoyed their racing - I hope so anyway.

Thanks for going through the Autosports, I had done the same thing a few weeks ago as my father has most 1962 editions. For what it's worth, I think the Guards Trophy car and the Gold Cup car may have been different 23s but I am not 100% sure.

Sadly, C.J. (Joe) Hicks was indeed a relation, a younger brother, and it was his death in an accident at the September 22nd meeting at Goodwood driving the aforementioned Lotus XI which prompted Bob's decision to retire from racing immediately.

They do sound fun, don't they?! I believe they ran out of a garage based in Dursley, Gloucs, although I'm not 100% on that one - perhaps our very own Ted Walker, who lives in said town, might be able to confirm or deny?

The team was Anthony (Tony) Kilburn and N.A.P (Nick) Garbett. After he stopped driving, Tony went on to be an entrant. running a Lotus 30 if I'm not mistaken. The interesting thing here was that Nick was a mechanic with the Team Lotus Formula 1 team, until he (and, I believe, his wife) very sadly drowned off the coast while sailing near Poole. When I asked Bob Dance about it, he was a bit vague about the date but on Ancestry.com it is listed as 1967. Nick raced his 23 in 1962 (Tony also drove it once, at least, appearing in the '62 Guards Trophy at Brands Hatch) and 1963, until a big crash in the Lavant Cup on April 15th at Goodwood. I can find no subsequent record of Nick racing his 23 or any other car, again, after this date.

Correct Michael! Entered a Lotus 30 for S (Simon?).C. de Lautour in 1965 under the Tony Kilburn Racing banner.

They were aged 29 and 26 respectively.

Verdict: misadventure. No life jackets, no anchor, boat fit only for river or lake. (The Times, 13 April 1967)

Pete53: yes, that's the one, thanks!
Geoff E: thank you for the additional information, I was never sure when this was or what the circumstances were, all very sad. I know Bob D was very upset about it and it seems Nick was very popular among the Team Lotus 'lads'.
