Appalling effort, not just with Denny at #11, but it's just as woeful further down.
I try to never look at these lists, because it only ever provokes needless conflict between groups of differing viewpoints, but foolishly opened the link : drat !
Doesn't say much for Alan Henry's sympathy or understanding for his long-term work habitat, or maybe he's just jumbled it up to spark up his web site hit count, but it does him little credit.
He might just as well have written, "Fangio would never have stayed with Schumacher in equal cars : discuss" and then gone on holidays...

The list is bizarre in the extreme. Denny number 11? Right, and Paul was the 11th most important Beatle. And I'm a rabid Gilles supporter, but the man spent one weekend of his life in a McLaren. That rates a place 20 spots higher than Peter Gethin? Someone hasn't taken his meds...

Aye indeed and I wonder what folk like Mansell (great driver though he was but most definitely not in a McLaren) and Alliot are doing on the list? Mad. Also a massive Gilles fan but he done one race and they decided to pass on him, silly move maybe but surely not worthy of inclusion in a list of McLaren's top 50 drivers?

Perhaps the drivers are listed in order of the amount of money they brought to the team :)

It's going to be ridiculous however it pans out. If Rosberg's contribution to McLaren is ranked above Denny's it'll be an absolute travesty. If Keke hasn't made the list at all, it'll be equally unjust.

It would be really interesting to hear Ron's opinion of these somewhat eccentric rankings, he isn't one to forget his beginnings. It's a shame he isn't on TNF.

Presently there is a Top 50 drivers for McLaren apparently by the hand of Alan Henry.

While there is consistency in the idiocy of the order in the list, putting Denny Hulme at number 11 in inexcusable has caused the type of publicity in forums that I assure you that you don't won't and I am offended enough to never purchase your magazine ever again while Mr Henry is a part of it.

Gilles was a Philip Morris driver (he wore the Marlboro logo as a Formula Atlantic racer) and we can assume that is why McLaren were unable to keep him. His McLaren race is notable for being the penultimate swan song of the M23 and for his demonstration that he was ready to do the job.

Like Mark, I don't understand why being a Marlboro driver should have precluded him from driving for a Marlboro-sponsored team. According to the Donaldson bio, there were rumours at the time that Marlboro wanted a European driver, which Marlboro denied. I've always believed it was just because Teddy Mayer preferred Tambay to Villeneuve.

I thin k you're right, Tim

My mole at the time said the sponsors (not necessarily only Marlboro) would be more impressed by a handsome Frenchman than a barefoot French-Canadian

The same mole later said the team regretted their choice...

I suppose it wasn't necessarily an illogical choice at the time, after all Tambay had worked wonders with the Ensign in 1977 and in half-a-season had scored as much as Regga had in a full season...

Apologies for being oblique. When Gilles entered Formula One, Marlboro were personal sponsors of many drivers. Ferrari, notably, did not have any sponsors who were not suppliers of goods and services. Ferrari were reluctant to pay high driver salaries but this was usually mitigated by personal sponsorship from Marlboro. As a (hugely talented) Philip Morris driver Gilles could expect that Marlboro would find him a place at a top team, and out of McLaren and Ferrari one team had to lose.

As far as I'm concerned this so-called list lost whatever credence it had when Denny Hulme was listed as 11th....nuff said.

Don't get me wrong because I really really rate Dan but to have him 2 places behind Denny for the fill in job he did in the immediate aftermath of Bruce's death......

The "wotifs" don't count but Denny came very close to taking the WDC in 1968 when he lead the championship with 2 races to go.
Add his CanAm domination and some great drives and being rated by JYS and Mr Henry just looks like another member of the sniffy English club, far from the ilk of Jenks and Roebuck.

I'd like to do a rating on F1 journalists. Mr Henry has sunk without trace in mine - woeful, even allowing for each to their own!

After winning the championship in 1967 of course.

I can't recall any JYS verdict on Denny, but after seeing his recent comments on one of his old mates, I think he might rate Fred Goodwin a better driver than any that Alan Henry listed.

I've just checked the 'Top 50 drivers' page on McLaren's site, and it's all gone very quiet, untouched since Peter Revson was added (two places above Denny) two weeks ago.

I wonder if the disbelief and ridicule that Alan Henry's ratings have attracted from almost all, has lessened official approval for what has turned out to be a very silly idea.

I too was wondering why it had gone so quiet. My theory is that he/they have just realised that they have nine drivers to fit into the remaining eight places.

Revson at 9 (two spots ahead of Hulme, who won more Can-Am championships and more GPs for McLaren while driving in the same period as Revson) and Coulthard at 8.

Maybe they're dragging it out to build suspense. Who's number 1? Senna? Bart Simpson? Come back for the exciting finale!

This mad list is underway again and guess what? Keke Rosberg at no.7. Madness. Lauda at no.6 as well. I don't know why they have started this again now after all its not like they would be trying to divert attention away from anything right now.

Keke Rosberg with a whole 22 points scored driving McLarens gets No.7 while Denny Hulme with 6 (corrected) GP Victories driving Mclarens and 2 Can Am championships languishes at No.11 !

If Bart isn't named No.1 I bet it will be Howard Marks :stoned: :smoking:

Are you a greengrocer?

This ranking lost all credibility when it got to Denny, though it didn't have very much going for it before that point.

I still got six candidates (McLaren, Hakkinen, Hunt, Prost, Senna, Fittipaldi) on my list with only five places available. I guess they won't have Bruce in it.

If, like me, they drop Senna for bad behavior Bruce can and should still win it, after all no Bruce no McLaren ! Simples ;)

How many other employees? Not important?
Why all this fuss about the drivers. The lucky ones who get paid to play with the expensive toys...

It's the very least they can do when they won't even let their drivers keep the trophies that they win.

Not sure of your point, but I understand that most of the F1 trophies in David Coulthard's museum are replicas bought by his father.
