Forgive my ignorance but is it only the 1 McLaren running?

Both McLaren's compete in the main race today but both DNF'd. The commentators did say they have a lot of upgrades coming for the next race.

Just like in F1.

Well, out of the 4 stints of the two races, the first one comforts me a bit for the other 3. That was a great stint by Parente from 8 to 3 in the damp, hard-fighting and overtaking Ferraris and Audis too. That was a great drive, despite the car's lack of good top speed made really hard to overtake with it on this narrow track.

Perfect season start for Audi, double 1-2, well done to them!

There's a story in this week's Autosport about plans for a major international motor race, quite possibly World GT1, to be held on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria next year...

They couldn't make the Durban street race happen in 2010, plus we all know their habit of changing the calendar 55 times throughout the season, so I don't have the highest confidence...

Well the Lagos-based circuit is still in the planning stages, so its only a pipe dream at the moment.

Top marks to Bartels for fending off Jager towards the end. Great racing throughout the field!

This FIA GT World championship could be an excellent support race of a real championsip of real GT1 cars, but these GT3 car field is a joke comparing to the former season's field...

I really don't get why the series gets as much stick as it does.

Don't like it? Then don't watch it. And certainly don't complain about it etiher.

In today's issue of Autosport:

- The "GT3+" upgrades will likely be delayed until 2014 on cost grounds.
- The Korean round of this year's championship will likely be cancelled. Ratel is looking for a replacement.

Slovakiaring this weekend! Peter Kox and Maxime Martin will miss the event due to prior commitments in German GT racing; Kox will be replaced by local man Stefan Rosina. The Valmon team is also switching to Aston Martin Vantages this weekend, from the old DBRS9s.

Fifteen-car grid this weekend as Team Russia are not competing for reasons I can't fathom out.

This "new" GT1 championship is a shame. The SRO/Rathel screw it very...

They should keep last years cars and combined them with GT2 or GT3 cars as in the former seasons.

More GT1 bashing, I see...

Anyway, here's Ortelli's brown trousers moment during qualifying this morning:

Decent enough Qualifying Race, once it got going. Vilander's manoeuvres at the start, to move from fourth to first, were sublime. Equally impressive were Enge and Salaquarda towards the end. All in all, a good race - big grid or not.

Thumbs down to autosport claiming Buurman and Dusseldorp are German. They are Dutch.

Just spotted that little gaff as well.

Although, it does only refer to Dusseldorp being German. Saying he finished behind Bartels, not Buurman.

The Chinese races have been cancelled, and there are still only fifteen entries for this weekend's race at Portimao. I believe that the world championship status could be voided if the series does not travel to enough continents, or fewer than eighteen cars compete in most of the events. In other news, Rosina replaces Enge.

This championship will not exist next year. SRO has set a deadline of late August for 10 manufacturers to commit or the series get disbanded. Who the hell would want in on this mess?

The SRO only thanks this for themselves.

They could have a decent grid with 15-16 GT1 cars (Nismo, Ford GT40, Lambo LP 670, DBR9's), and a similar GT2 field, but they force Rathel's stupid ideas...

Agreed but that deadline is just Ratel's usual public relations crap, last year he wanted to have 9-12 teams signed & paid up by JULY or otherwise he'd cancel the championship... of course it didn't happen

Combined Portimao FIA GT1 (GT3) and FIA GT3 grids had less cars than FIA GT3 alone had last year... what an absolute joke. Cancellation of the Chinese rounds also means that this prestigious "world championship" only has 1-2 non-European races this year

Great timing! Today's Autosport reports that Ratel's latest plan is to merge the GT1 and GT3 fields for the remaining European races. He will present the "rescue plan" to the FIA (which already vetoed the idea pre-season). For the Indian race, the GT1 teams will be encouraged to run three cars. Ratel also wants two more races in Europe to replace the cancelled Chinese trip; one of these will likely be at the Nurburgring, as part of the Blancpain Endurance Series bill, which will result in the Moscow round changing dates.

Finally, the cancellation of the champioship has been confirmed for next year... okay not perhaps officially, but SRO is stepping down and that means 99% chance of killing the final bit of life support this series has left.

Same for Euro GT3 too

why they separate GT1, GT2 and GT3 and have shorter race at first place? I love the old FIA GT Championship more.

I think the shortening of the races was to make them more TV friendly.
