Hi

I have a P&M Kawasaki frame no 52 I am trying to trace its history all I have at the moment is it was built for Newport Kawasaki.

If anyone one has any information or any photos of P&Ms from the late 70s early 80s I would be gratefull.

Thanks
PC

Hi bud,one of our forum members, known here as pierrepeterpedro, is Peter McNab, and was the "P" in "P and M", so he may well be able to point you in the right direction.
Try sending him a pm through the forum.
Regards GD :)

Have you spoken to Richard Packett at P&M ? He may well have more information on your frame.

In the meantime here is a pic of my 1984/5 Kawasaki F2 chassis ( the sidestand is non-standard as the previous owner was going to convert it to a road bike). PM me if you want more info/details.

hi,
i believe the bike you are enquiring about was ridden by keith ferrel who raced for a company that was based in newport, south wales.
the engine at that time was 1000 c.c. kawasaki.
if you look in the archives of llandow you will see a photo of this particular bike.
someone has already made enquiries about this bike on this forum once before. would you be the same person ?.
hope this is of some help.

Sigh...thanks, Mick

Actually, Richard Peckett would indeed be a better source than Peter M, they grew apart in a fairly major way and I would think Richard P would have more records of those impressive years. That chassis is lovely, simple enough but looks right in so many ways.

Hi

It might have been the guy I bought the bike from
It was used for club racing then sat in a shed for 15 years in bits, a couple of years ago it was dragged out and rebuilt by a friend of myself and the guy who owned it Gerry.
I bought it when the guy who built it decided he did not want to race it.
I have no history of it before then.
The engine is 1260 cc tuned and built originally by Jim Wells.

Hi KH - it was me that enquired about Keith Ferrell's P&M previously. When I spoke to Keith, it turned out he had 2 P&M's at various times. The first was from 1979 - 1982 and it was an F1 (1000cc), but he sold it when the class went to 750cc. It could be this is the one, but only Keith would know for sure. The second P&M Keith Ferrell had was in 1983 and this was an F2 Kawasaki which he sold in 1984/5.

Collieek - I definately think a call to Richard Peckett at P&M would help your search for information.

Mark.

Hi PC

I spoke to Keith and asked if he would be willing for me to pass his details on to you, which he is, so I've sent you a PM with Keith's details.

Briefly, Keith cannot remember the frame number of his F1, but he had it from new and raced it in the British F1 series from 1979 - 1982. He was sponsored by Newport Kawasaki for 2 years and then by Bristol Kawasaki. He sold it at the end of 1982, when the F1 class went to 750cc, to someone in the IOM where it was club raced. He subsequently believes that Colin Aldridge had the bike in his collection around 1991, but that is the last he heard of it. Coincidentaly, he has recently started to collate his old racing photographs, the majority of which are of the old F1, so hopefully he should have a good reference for your information.

Let me know how it goes !

Mark.

I don't recall the Newport Kawasaki connection. I can say that I definitely made the frame, as I got to number 59 when I left after selling up my share of the business to Richard. I never built a monoshock frame, so if no 52 has one, it was modified later.

As GD66 says, we did grow apart in a fairly major way, like any split up of a partnership, but we still correspond at Christmas. I keep saying to myself that I must go to see him when I'm over in the UK but never get around to it.

I do have photos of P&M's, but only from magazine and newspaper articles, and mostly of 1978, probably not of much help to you.

Peter

Hi Peter

The frame I have no 52 is still a twin shock frame the history I had and the new info I have from this forum does tie in. I still have to speak to Kevin so this should confirm the info I have.

I have tried to get a picture put on as the bike is now but all I get is a link and no photo.

Thanks

Paul

You have to put the photo on photobucket or flikr first, you then clic on direct link box on your photo, then click on 4th little box from the right on the forum reply above which says insert image when you put cursor over it, then paste in box that says please enter url for this image, sounds complicated but you will get the hang of it?

Looks as though it's been cared for.

The swinging arm and all its attachments have been changed. Can't see the front end well enough to see what may have been changed there.

There's a good photo here of one of the P&M's raced by Phase One. This is one originally built for Dennis McMillan. Click on the bike no.59 further down the page to zoom in, and again to zoom further. The Phase One bikes are very original; they seem to make originality one of their priorities.

They also own and race the bike John Cowie and Bernie Toleman raced in 1978 in the European Endurance series and that John used to win the UK F1 title.

To follow the Phase One bikes, start here.

I must say that it gives me some pleasure that so many of the lumps of metal we put together over 30 years ago are still being used and enjoyed on the tracks.

The front has got the original Ceriani forks I have got the original swinging arm but it has a slight bend in it I am not sure if it could be repaired. I also have the 18" wheels and discs I plan at some ponit to refit these just depends how easy it is to repair the swinging arm.
