In the book about Mallock one of the cars was sent out to qualify unfinished, with openings in the floor on the passengers side. Driver commented that it had no go down the straight but went well around the corners. Theory was the 'shoe box effect' ala a large cockpit opening lead to a low pressure in cockpit that was transferred tot he underfloor by the openings in floor. Car was modified to have a sliding 'inspection' panels operated by driver - closed for straight and open on the corners...or so the story goes.
