To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix which was held in WA, the WA Sporting Car Club will stage the inaugural 'International Historic Challenge' at Barbagallo Raceway from the 9th to 11th of November, 2012. This event will coincide with the original timing of the 1962 AGP and will be held two weeks before the 2012 Tasman event at Eastern Creek, Sydney. This will allow sufficient time for containers to be railed to Eastern Creek. Cost of this railing is being finalised but is expected to be between six hundred and a thousand dollars.
The meeting will be WA's first ever all-historic one and it is hoped a significant number of overseas and eastern states competitors will be present. The meeting will include a national round of the Australian Formula Junior series.
Barbagallo Raceway is currently undergoing a ten million dollar upgrade.
To assist international competitors the WASCC will organise internal freight from wharf to track and from track to rail terminal at no cost. This will be provided by Sea Containers in Fremantle. In addition the club will manage quarantine aspects and will provide free entry, pit garages and hospitality to overeas competitors. Interstate competitors will receive free pit garages and hospitality.
We hope to see you there!

The trophy is being presented to Bruce by the Governor of WA, the late Sir Charles Gairdner, who ISTR was a bit of a petrol-head. The long-serving secretary of the WASCC, the late Patsy Hills, stands behind Sir Charles. Prior to the GP, Jack Brabham had taken the Governor for a lap of the Caversham circuit in Patsy's TR3.

I attended the practice today. I spoke to Jan McLaren, initially not knowing who she was. She asked If I'd seen Bruce at the Caversham circuit, interested in its history etc. I told her I remembered well the F1 Cooper and the Mini Cooper sedan he raced.
She said that the Mini was taken off a dealers floor, raced and returned on the following Monday!

Cheers, Wily.

The Mini Cooper was in fact raced after the AGP driven always by Jack Ayres.
John it was excellent up there today unfortunatley i had to leave at 11.30 but i will be there tomorrow and the rest of the weekend.
I have my photo display setup in McCracken house.what a great array of cars entered, it was great to wander through the garages looking at them and talking to the drivers who were very friendly.

Thanks, Terry. I went out for a look today and was most impressed with the FJ entry. While there was a lively scrap for the lead, I too found it difficult to keep my gaze away from that lovely little Stanguellini (well driven, as well.) In all, an interesting and varied programme.
More pics, please !

You do nicely with the detail shots, Terry... keep them coming!

And it's nice to see that Rennmax looking so good, too.

What's a T800, by the way?

I suspect a T800 is a T300 with 500 extra hp...

...or a typo in the programme.

No, it's an Indy car from the 1980s. And it's massive. Sounds to be running a F5000-type Chevy. But it's just orange. The Ansett paint job adorns the magnificent Elfin MR8 F5000 car, demonstrated to mass drooling by Bill Hemming. Yum.

Possibly, our Australian members are not aware that Jan Biekens, the owner of the Stanguellini, is the man who commissioned the building of the magnificent Sharknose Ferrari replica. He owns the car but told me recently that he has been thinking about selling it as he prefers the Stanguellini.

No accounting for taste!!!!

Alf was sitting in the car all belted up for quite along time before the start of the afternoon run on Saturday.
When they went to fire it up the fuel pump cried enough and that was it. Mechanic then set about replacing it. So no run.

Why on earth is a Lola painted in the colors of Ansett team ELFIN? I presume that it is that car of Stubbers which is not a 5000 either.

Yeah, I had total brain fade. It was a tuning day, not a race day, so there were cars there not in the programme. I ought to know an Ansett Team Elfin when I see it. Local lad Stu Kostera was, I think, the last Team driver for Elfin works team, raced F5000 and the big Sports car. He told me the sporty, basically the same car with a wider tub and a full-width body, was much more stable, due to the better aero. He also said that the Ansett part of the deal meant free first-class air travel for him from home to races and back.

I'm not absolutely sure of the provenance of the Elfin, it had Theodore Racing on the side, as well at the Rothmans colour scheme. And since the owner couldn't paint the word Rothmans on the wing endplates where it used to be he got clever and painted ROT MAN there. Intentional pun casting aspersions on the law I wonder?

Alf did run the Tiga on both days.

Saturday was late after the flagies started to walk in. He was doing rather well in the old girl. It is a sight I am glad i got to behold.

The event was a good one but sadly it was not pumped enough. It was like the event didnt exist unless you where in the group who knew. Hopefully next time the will get a good following and grow.

Got a link for shots of Alfie in the Ricciardo Tiga Nivola? Not Facebook pls...

Is Paul Stubber still resident in WA, his Group A HDT A9Xs would seem a good crowd puller, not to mention his many other race cars seen here at Phillip Island, the March Indycar, the Lola Corvette GTP, or last seen in Europe the Veskanda, or the much loved by spectators all, the Camaro ... where are you Paul?

The Elfin F5000 is the MR8C, driven in period by some pretty talented drivers, including Garrie Cooper, John Bowe, Larry Perkins, James Hunt (Rose City 10000 at Winton '78) and Didier Pironi (1980 AGP at Calder.)

It is owned by Bill Hemming, resides at the magnificent Elfin Heritage Centre in Mebourne ( http://www.elfinheritage.com.au/ ) and is a regular competitor at east coast historic race meetings.

Was good to see you again at the track Ken.

Need all the old crew back up there to teach some of the younger ones what the place was like. So many are sadly blind to the history of the place.

The last time an Elfin MR8 was at Wanneroo Park was probably for the 1979 AGP.
Larry Perkins (Elfin MR8) and Alfie Costanzo (Lola T430) were on the front row, but Larry eliminated both of the cars with a big lunge inside Alfie into the first corner on the first lap.
John Wright (Lola T400) then looked like winning the event, but blew a motor with about a lap to go, leaving John Walker (Lola T332) to win the race from John Bowe's Elfin MR8, Rob Butcher's Lola T332 and John Smith in the Ralt RT1.

The Lola was a mess after Larry did that. Will have to sort those images out sometime soon.

The Tiga is one good looking girl but only that one chassis. The other in the state looks like it has been a paddock basher sadly.

And it was a lot of fun hosting you as well Jan,

Great shot by Roos by the way!!
Having the cars finish up on the track after the running of the AGP reenactment was a feature of the event I feel and Roos’ photo captures it all, of particular interest is the good gentleman Dave Edwards alongside the trusty steed he drove in the 1962 AGP at Caversham

You guys and Girls are welcome any time it was quite a bit of fun with you weaving in and out of us in the event! You all drove well and no tears at the end of the day.

More photos please.

It was justified that the TS led them into the first corner. It was a pity the owner of the ex Dunkerton Lotus S7 wasn't invited as it was
the last sportscar to run in an AGP. I saw it at the Tasman Revival and it looked as good as ever.
