International Historic Challenge in Western Australia--November 2012
#1
Posted 23 March 2012 - 06:13
The meeting will be WA's first ever all-historic one and it is hoped a significant number of overseas and eastern states competitors will be present. The meeting will include a national round of the Australian Formula Junior series.
Barbagallo Raceway is currently undergoing a ten million dollar upgrade.
To assist international competitors the WASCC will organise internal freight from wharf to track and from track to rail terminal at no cost. This will be provided by Sea Containers in Fremantle. In addition the club will manage quarantine aspects and will provide free entry, pit garages and hospitality to overeas competitors. Interstate competitors will receive free pit garages and hospitality.
We hope to see you there!

The trophy is being presented to Bruce by the Governor of WA, the late Sir Charles Gairdner, who ISTR was a bit of a petrol-head. The long-serving secretary of the WASCC, the late Patsy Hills, stands behind Sir Charles. Prior to the GP, Jack Brabham had taken the Governor for a lap of the Caversham circuit in Patsy's TR3.Trophy presentation. Bruce's sister Jan will be in attendance and is bring with her the original trophy.

I attended the practice today. I spoke to Jan McLaren, initially not knowing who she was. She asked If I'd seen Bruce at the Caversham circuit, interested in its history etc. I told her I remembered well the F1 Cooper and the Mini Cooper sedan he raced.
She said that the Mini was taken off a dealers floor, raced and returned on the following Monday!
Cheers, Wily.

And it's nice to see that Rennmax looking so good, too.
What's a T800, by the way?

The Tiga was just doing demonstration laps with the Elfin 5000, i dont know who was driving it.
Alf was sitting in the car all belted up for quite along time before the start of the afternoon run on Saturday.
When they went to fire it up the fuel pump cried enough and that was it. Mechanic then set about replacing it. So no run.

Why on earth is a Lola painted in the colors of Ansett team ELFIN? I presume that it is that car of Stubbers which is not a 5000 either. These are the F Jrs in the official programme:

Bob Birrell, Lotus 20/22, UK (Car is local, driver is UK)
Duncan Rabagliati, Alexis HF1, UK

Murray Bryden, Lotus 20B, Vic Aus
John Holmes, Lotus 18, NZ
Jan Biekens, Stanguellini, Netherlands
Bill Hemming, Elfin 1962, Aus
Jim Barclay, Elfin, Gemini Mk 3, NZ
Ray Roberton, McEntee, Aus
Geoffrey Findlay, Gremlin, Silver, Aus
Kevin Taylor, Brabham BT21, Aus
John Dowson, Brabham BT2, UK

I'm not absolutely sure of the provenance of the Elfin, it had Theodore Racing on the side, as well at the Rothmans colour scheme. And since the owner couldn't paint the word Rothmans on the wing endplates where it used to be he got clever and painted ROT MAN there. Intentional pun casting aspersions on the law I wonder?

Saturday was late after the flagies started to walk in. He was doing rather well in the old girl. It is a sight I am glad i got to behold.
The event was a good one but sadly it was not pumped enough. It was like the event didnt exist unless you where in the group who knew. Hopefully next time the will get a good following and grow.

Is Paul Stubber still resident in WA, his Group A HDT A9Xs would seem a good crowd puller, not to mention his many other race cars seen here at Phillip Island, the March Indycar, the Lola Corvette GTP, or last seen in Europe the Veskanda, or the much loved by spectators all, the Camaro ... where are you Paul?

Need all the old crew back up there to teach some of the younger ones what the place was like. So many are sadly blind to the history of the place.

A sight we had not seen for a long time!
The last time an Elfin MR8 was at Wanneroo Park was probably for the 1979 AGP.
Larry Perkins (Elfin MR8) and Alfie Costanzo (Lola T430) were on the front row, but Larry eliminated both of the cars with a big lunge inside Alfie into the first corner on the first lap.
John Wright (Lola T400) then looked like winning the event, but blew a motor with about a lap to go, leaving John Walker (Lola T332) to win the race from John Bowe's Elfin MR8, Rob Butcher's Lola T332 and John Smith in the Ralt RT1.

The Tiga is one good looking girl but only that one chassis. The other in the state looks like it has been a paddock basher sadly.

Thanks, Terry. I went out for a look today and was most impressed with the FJ entry. While there was a lively scrap for the lead, I too found it difficult to keep my gaze away from that lovely little Stanguellini (well driven, as well.) In all, an interesting and varied programme.
More pics, please !
We had a splendid time in Australia, both in Barbagallo and Eastern Creak. A lot of track time and very friendly people.
Sure we'll be back.

And it was a lot of fun hosting you as well Jan,
Great shot by Roos by the way!!
Having the cars finish up on the track after the running of the AGP reenactment was a feature of the event I feel and Roos’ photo captures it all, of particular interest is the good gentleman Dave Edwards alongside the trusty steed he drove in the 1962 AGP at Caversham
You guys and Girls are welcome any time it was quite a bit of fun with you weaving in and out of us in the event! You all drove well and no tears at the end of the day.
More photos please.

the last sportscar to run in an AGP. I saw it at the Tasman Revival and it looked as good as ever.
