Didn't want to start a new thread but some may find this Gilles related tweet interesting, I have no idea if this is well known or not.

“@F1Photographer: Just found out Gilles #Villeneuve had agreed terms with #f1 #mclaren for '83 just be for he died.”

I had heard that before. No idea how true it is.

Sometimes it's Williams, isn't it? Were Lauda and Watson not already signed for '83? IIRC Ronnie Peterson had signed a contract with Mclaren for 1979 when he died following the Italian Grand Prix.

Either way he'd have been Rosberg-ing it up trying to keep pace with cars with much more horsepower than his. So sort of the opposite of his 1981 season.

A couple more clips of Jacques @ Fiorano. Best videos I've seen from the tribute day, from Ferrari.com

I don't remember where or when, but I have either read it before or heard an F1 person of the time (either driver or personnel) mention this too. I was chatting to a friend about it a few months back but couldn't find my source.

I was under the impression (from rumours at the time and the Donaldson book) that Gilles was seriously contemplating leaving Ferrari at the time of his death.

McLaren was said to be the destination but Gilles also had a serious interest in starting his own team from memory (Team Villeneuve??)
