I've just been reading this 1934 novel, which it seems wasn't ghost-written as were most books "by" Campbell, but was written by Campbell himself. It was made into a very bad Hollywood racing movie in the 30s, starring Dennis O'Keefe.

While the plot is negligible--I worked out the cause of the accidents, and the baddie, within two chapters, but got the method wrong--the lengthy descriptions of the various Grand Prix races involved are authentic, convincing, and detailed.

The version I have been tackling is the serial edition, which appeared in two newspapers in Australia in 1935. I am converting it to digital epub format to read on my Kindle. Has anybody else on TNF read it, or am I an orphan? And did Campbell REALLY write it?

Yes, but with some help, mainly from John Wentworth-Day (Campbell's usual "ghost writer"). He described the process as "a most complicated and tedious endeavour, and much more difficult to accomplish than I thought".

My digital edition of "Salute to the Gods" has been posted on a Canadian digital book forum as it is out of copyright and in the public domain in Canada and also in Australia. It is in .mobi format, which is suitable for Kindle. It can easily be converted to other formats using free software such as Calibre, an e-book manager.

Canadian and Australian TNFers can help themselves to the book with a clear conscience. It will not be out of copyright in UK and other Life +70 countries until 2018.

The forum is http://www.mobileread.com/forums/ and it is in the forum "E-Book Uploads - Patricia Clark Memorial Library" under the subsection "mobi/prc"

Like TNF, you need to register.
