Little Chris,
The Northern Ireland Stock Car/Rod man was Leslie Dallas. He was also a handy asutotester and quick on his occasional hill climb appearances. His son Alan appeared in FF1600 and FVL in the 90s.

David, I thought that Ron was a Holden dealer? Plus JRA products as well as used?
Though the luxury tax was the death of quite a few upmarket franchises nationally.

Yes - he was a Holden dealer ....as well as Mazda, Jaguar, Range Rover, Land Rover, Rover, Mini, Triumph, and possibly a few others I've forgotten. As a fellow Range Rover, Land Rover, Rover, Mini, Triumph dealer we had a fair bit to do with each other, and i also drove the JRA sponsored Triumph Dynamites under his banner.....

Nick Whiting's relationship with Charlie makes one think about the probity of all the participants in the F1 circus.

You're being too kind Doug. I thought his post was deeply offensive.

Thank you for getting there before me. As I remember I wasn't quite sure it was Mr Dallas, but I do remember it as an extremely unpleasant drive-by shooting. Not what we want or like.

The Dynamite was reasonably quick for 1/2 a race!

Shot by his wife. Although on FindAGrave it is claimed he killed his wife and later turned the gun on himself the official verdict stated that it was him who died first.

Julio Devoto, also known as "Ampacama", used to race against Juan Manuel Fangio and the Galvez brothers in the Argentinian Turismo Carretera series during the '40s and '50s. He scored 12 wins during his career, which lasted until the '60s, and was shot dead in 1973, in a very confusing episode, when he out ran a police blockade in Villa Union (La Rioja). A bullet went through his head.

Alfio Gambero. A Sicilian from Catania. Manufactured and drove an Alfa Romeo engined sports racer called an ALGA.

Killed by the mafia about 15 years ago. But that really didn't surprise me.

Cannot say I totally agree with you there. The Sprints were pretty succesfull in there time in the Saloon car series in Britain. Had one myself briefly, and never had a problem with it regarding the powerplant. Overdrive could be a bit tempremental if one used it too much in second gear though, but a great car I thought. Could show a pair of heels to a 2002 BM as well.

Merv Waggott was no mean engine man...

He built twin-cam heads for Holdens, he created the Waggott 2-litre 4-valve engine which was in a class of its own in Australian racing at the time.

On looking at the Dolomite blocks, he made a pronouncement:

"Typical Poms! Three eighths of an inch of cast iron to hold in the water, thirty thou to hold in the horsepower!"

These cars raced with bearings half-way along their axle shafts to stop whipping (shhh! Don't tell!) and a multitude of other bodge-ups to make them appear reliable.

The biggest thing they did for motorists in Australia was to make room under the Button Plan for more Peugeot 505s to be sold here.

Merv had an amazing ability to look a an engine part, and see any weaknesses. Jack Bono took the [seized big-end] crank from my 40hp VW engine, in 1961, to Merv check out. He took one look [he had never seen one before], and remarked that the oil-ways were drilled all wrong. The new crank was the same, so Merv re-drilled it the way he thought it should be. Never had any more trouble. VW changed the drilling of their cranks not long after that!

Or have we gone right off topic?

So I guess you could say we're a little off topic.

I understand French GT driver Jean-Claude Geurie was murdered in a crime of passion sometime in the late 70s-early 80s.

French rally driver Bernard Donguès was murdered by robbers in 1995 in Guatemala, while cycling throug hSouth America.

Not a driver, but Sodemo founder Bernard Mangé was killed by an angry customer in his son's bike shop in Sep 2010, who hit him in the head with his crash helmet.

They were having a sidelight discussion about Ron Hodgson.

I gave them both barrels and told them to get back on topic.

Former NASCAR driver Jerry Schild was murdered on the 4th of August 2012, aged 57, by a co-worker in North Dakota:

http://katytimes.com...1a4bcf887a.html

The William Jackson whom I mentioned in the first post was an English stock car driver. The reference to his murder was from an Australian newspaper, hence the confusion.

I note that Andely Chan is mentioned. I was at Macau when Chan was murdered along with his chief mechanic and a girlfriend coming out of a nightclub. Chan was a Triad member who, apparently, was on his way up. One of the main British Hong Kong-based marshals was in the anti-triad squad of the Hong Kong police and admitted that they had been tipped off that an attempt would be made on Chan but had no idea when it would be.

When we woke up on the morning of the Macau Formula 3 race we found horrendous photos in the Chinese papers showing Chan and his mechanic slumped over the dash of the 4x4 they were driving. At the Macau races there is always a race for Chinese drivers in saloon cars where there is heavy betting as Triad bosses entered their private drivers. Chan, however, was keen on racing and had finished, I think, third in the race and went out celebrating on the Saturday night. It later turned out that two Triad hit men were employed from across the Macau border and they drove into Macau on a motorcycle., As Chan and his crew left the nightclub the two men stopped on their motorcycle, shot the occupants and then sped off to the Macau/China border and were back in China before the police arrived on the scene. Exciting times.

Interesting to me (see sig for clues) is that Mr Chan was accused of giving HK$10k to Hong Kong police officers, and Chan was murdered shortly before he was due to give evidence in the trial against the officers. One of those officers was Peter Pannu, who is now vice-chairman of Birmingham City...

I'll bet there's quite a list of drivers who were lucky they weren't murdered by their team managers, team mates, fellow competitors, sponsors, etc.

But then I guess that would be a whole new topic.

Bernard Mangé certainly was a driver ( under the alias "Francia" ) before he turned to full-time engine tuning ; he even won the 1970 R8 Gordini Cup which was usually the breeding ground and stepping stone for many french up-and-coming drivers at the time

After a long silence there was a police investigation in May this year in a IJmuiden warehouse. Nothing found though that could lead to car dealer and BMW 123/Renault Megane racer Charles. He left his home on March 29th, so that is the official date of missing. His disappearing is linked to stolen classic cars (of which he may have known too much) as well as a shooting one day before he was last seen. The shooting was heard in another shack were the police later found a damaged car with traces of drugs and a label of Charles company.

Last year I wrote on the "Driven to Crime" thread about Australian sports car driver Alex Tsakmakis, who was bludgeoned to death by 7 blows of a sack filled with 20kg of gym weights.

Some would say a shocking,  violent death. Others would say he got what he deserved.

Tsakmakis, a convicted double murderer,  was in prison when he was murdered by a fellow prisoner. He was widely considered by police to be responsible for 9 more murders, plus one more, when in prison he burnt a fellow inmate to death, earning him the nickname "The BBQ King".

Not the kind of person to be rubbing guards with during a race !!

Add to the list the June 16, 1982, murder of Dr. Robert "Bugsy" Barnard, one of the founders of the short series of road races through the streets of Aspen, CO, held from 1951 through 1954. Barnard was one of the colorful characters in the sea of colorful characters that formed the population of Aspen in 1950s and 1960s, and served as mayor from 1965-1971. The mayoral election of 1969 was recounted to some extent by gonzo journalist, and Aspen resident, Hunter S. Thompson in his collection of essays "The Great Shark Hunt: Strange Tales from a Strange Time."
Barnard's body was discovered in the barn/garage/workshop of his home in Lamy, New Mexico, dead of a single gun shot to the forehead. Police investigation revealed that a considerable struggle had taken place inside the house. No arrests have ever been made in the crime.

HK$10K? At today's ROE that is not, I imagine, enough to bribe a senior (I presume as you say "accused") copper in what, again, I presume, to be a triad-related affair. I wonder whether the amount or the accusation is wrong.

Italian partisans, some time in early March 1945.

http://forums.autosp...-3#entry3711371

If you search Google Italy for Teagno's and Ronza's names together you'll find several references. The most reliable seems to be 'Il sangue dei vinti' on Google Books. The first result claims it happened in May 1946, which is clearly wrong!

Might also be reporting bias or the sheer number of Americans - a proper comparison population-wise would be the European racing world.

But from this thread it's safer to be a US racing driver than retired South African... :(

Thank you for that, much appreciated.

It raises the question as to whether Teagno was a pro-Mussolini 'fascist' or the victim of communist partisans who murdered people on the basis of their ideology, as apparently happened in France too.

Pro-Mussolini, apparently. I've had a PM conversation with another TNFer about this: Teagno was said to be a captain in the Salo Republic's infamous paramilitaries, the Brigate Nere. We're getting a bit O/T, but I'm currently reading 'Liberation', by William I Hitchcock, which is very revealing on this subject. (The US edition is called 'The Bitter Road to Freedom', which is the subtitle of the UK edition)
