Hi guys,
I'm looking for an article in Autosport by Mark Hughes, from sometime in 2005. It discussed the posibility that had Villeneuve gone back to McLaren for '83, would Senna have driven for McLaren. It explores other possibilities in the 80's driver market too.
Does anybody know which magazine this appeared in?
Any help would be great,
Cheers, fellow readers

I don't see how Gilles going to McLaren in '83 would have affected Senna's arrival at McLaren in '88. Prost might have had his return to McLaren delayed by a year or more if this had come to be. Has Ron Dennis ever said anything about Gilles going to McLaren ?

Interstingly enough this same subject is covered in the latest issue of Racer magazine. In theory, Gilles would have replaced Watson and partnered Lauda, and possibly won the championship at least once or twice . The article never mentioned other options for Prost...Williams maybe? Ferrari? A battle in 87 between Gilles (Mclaren) Prost/Piquet (Williams) and Senna/Mansell (Lotus) could have been very interesting.

He of course almost had a deal to race for Dennis before, so there was a mutual interest. However, things did not work out with Marlboro and in fact by 1982 Marlboro was even no longer a personal sponsor of Gilles, so although he was ready to consider leaving Ferrari (remember Team Villeneuve?) there was no way of knowing he was going to really do so, never mind change to McLaren, early May, 1982.

Afraid I don't know the article of which you speak, but I am sure I remember reading that Gilles was thinking of leaving Ferrari in the wake of Imola 1982. There was no suggestion that this was going to be a move to McLaren, however.

Villeneuve was thinking of leaving Ferrari before Imola. I think, in '81, there was the pit board thing with Williams. Villeneuve put on the board what he wanted to be paid and Williams (I think that was the team) put, on the board, what they were prepared to pay him and it went back and forth right under the nose of Piccinni (sp?).

the pitboard thing as you call it was with McLaren in fact
